the $7 license includes office 365 and some other bits and bobs so if you think of a 3 year life span its probably cheaper than having to sort out an VL agreement etc and pay for a copy of office for example as its about $250 which aint bad for a copy of windows and office along with support.

Its aimed at the smaller businesses who can not afford to pay for techies etc.

The basic windows you get with a new pc etc won't be going to pay model as it would kill off one of the main reasons people buy MS software as they use it at home.

More Windows 10 adverts.

Will they harrass users with Open Office or other software seen as competition too?

Official links? One of them was Forbes......Hardly the paragon of accuracy.
The other one pointed to the fact that the charges were for Enterprise editions. Please read the article.
AFAIK they have always charged this way.
It's not the 'naysayers' that have the problem it's the people who don't read anything properly and find it necessary to start conspiracy theories with no evidence whatsoever.
W10 is not a 'Free OS' if you miss updating then you will have to pay a one off licence fee for it...........As you always have.

Rather cheeky but no different to Google plugging Chrome on their search page as a better browser for years. No-one complained about that.

I don't use Chrome as my default browser nor Edge but if I did use Chrome I wouldn't be fazed by MS's notice.

Apparantly it happens if you dare to use Firefox too.
Customer bashing as well as opposition attacking.

Which non google products get this assault from google then?

Well i suppose you have proof from the MS board that the home versions will be going to subscription? if not then its just an opinion which hold exactly the same weight and validity as mine that they won't do it.

I don't want some 'tech expert' aka some journalist who knows one end of a power cord from another.

Enterprise has always been different from the consumer market.

Prior to Windows 10, how much money did MS make from consumer's purchasing Windows upgrades? I bet close to zero in relative terms. I've never ever purchased a Windows upgrade. I've always just used whatever Windows was current when I bought a new PC. The bulk of Windows revenue surely comes from OEM licenses.

And this analysis confirms it. Windows 10 subscriptions aren't happening. Here's why

"Meanwhile, in the last year for which we have figures, Windows licenses sold through retail channels, which includes upgrades and academic editions, constituted 8/10 of 1 percent of Microsoft's total revenue for the year. That's a mere drop in the bucket.

And that's been true for years."

I think a lot of you cynics are fixated on Microsoft being primarily about Windows as a product as contrasted with the importance of Windows as an ecosystem on top of which they sell their applications, most of which are enterprise-related..

RT users on ARM need to be aware that the Wintel alliance has struck big time.

Totally agree - people are getting paranoid about something that is complete on nonsense.

The only possible change is that a 'premium' version comes out where NEW specialist features cost money to use. This is very much the role model of many software offerings eg

Adobe - read pdfs free, edit them - pay money

Malwarebytes - offline protection free, online protection - pay money.

MS have never stated that this is going to happen, but I am sure this could never be discounted as part of a long term business plan.

I don't think most poster are dismissing the fact that MS are serious about going down the subscription route as a business model. I think they are right though to question to what extent and to speculate on what the consequences might be for MS.

Nope.

Enterprise version of Windows has been a subscription for years and years. This is nothing new, it has been called "Software Assurance".

They won't charge consumers the same way Apple and Google don't charge for OS X, iOS, Android and Chrome OS respectively.

They want to boost user numbers to kickstart their app development (and make money through the store) and also make money through directing your searches from Google to Bing via Cortana.

They will also make money by you purchasing Office 365 Home (which is an excellent deal by the way).

Looks like France is blocking the Microsoft future. I guess it is as much about the ads as about the data slurpng.

Sidestepping words but it looks like Microsoft will comply in France.

Don't use online install / upgrade.

Make a USB / DVD with W10 Media Creation Tool ("Install for another PC")

Boot W7 normally. Run Setup on the USB or DVD.

^^MS seem to be messing around today. Hence the Majorgeeks link.

I think I have seen this deja vue before.

History is definitely repeating itself with all the questions - we gave advice like this a year ago to the keen upgraders, now to the reluctant upgraders.

But hey - the advice never changrs and is still sound advice .

I welcome the fact that the schedule for major updates seems to have slowed in a rather drastic way.
Microsoft were talking about 3 or 4 major updates (for Windows 10) in 2016.
But here we have the first one arriving in August 2016. Not quite as spread out as the old Service Packs were, but not too bad.....

I like the idea of a fresh install and I can live with doing that just once each year. I reckon I can produce my personal configuration in less than 2 hours.

If you are going to install this update "over the top" of your existing configuration and if you are convinced that there is no disadvantage to this procedure (which is....let's face it, the "default" method) I am interested and will listen carefully to what you have to say.

Lots of issues came to light a year ago. Would have been nice if MS fixed them or issued a comment on them..

As far as I know, the only popular issue that seems to have been implemented is allowing W7/8/8.1 License keys during a clean install.
