I downloaded and ran the W7 to W10 upgrade on my 7 year old HP laptop, about 10 days ago. This is version 10.0.10586 and I have no complaints about its behaviour, it installed with only a couple of minor issues. It had problems with the wireless connection but connecting a network cable allowed it to download and install the correct driver (at least I think that is what it did).

I suppose some people might accuse me of being paranoid (ALL privacy settings turned off and running Spybot Anti Beacon). After the upgrade W10 has NEVER
- asked me to log in with a Microsoft account
- never pestered me with unwanted advertising
- never "nagged" me to use the Edge browser.

In fact I just have a desktop which really isn't very different to W7 which I can live with. As long as the future releases do not start nagging me to use features I really don't want to use I'm happy with it - remarkable really as I was VERY sceptical about W10 and nearly didn't upgrade.

Ir really isn't a horror story at all.

It's been a horror for those who have had serious problems.

Impossible to say how many.

1%, 2%, 5%?

I wouild guess it's not as high as 10% or the forums and media would be going ballistic

Does anybody in the know if when they release the iso's for the anniversary update? The activation will work the same? i.e. put your email address/password and it will activate say if you wanted to do a clean install?

The iso for the update will be released after the free upgrade deadline. Don't wait for it.

2nd August

If you are already on W10, you can 'In-place Upgrade' or Clean Install as you wish.

I doubt you will be asked for email/password, it should go through automatically for Upgrade.

You'll have to enter email/password for MS Account on Clean install otherwise you will be put on Local Account (which can be linked later)

I mean just sign in to my account on initial startup. Don't mind doing that as I got a few things purchased on the store. Planning to do a clean install when the iso's get released

It was reading articles like this
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/i...a00756c?auth=1
that had me worried, this is the same laptop I have.

This is what HP said
http://support.hp.com/us-en/document...01_title_r0006
"HP provides upgrade instructions, compatible software, and updated drivers for most computers sold after August 2013. Please refer to the Known issues after upgrading to Windows 10 section below.
If you purchased your computer prior to August 2013, HP has not tested or developed drivers for your computer model. Some features might not work, or the installation might not be successful
".

Not exactly helpful as my machine dates from 2009.

The Official Upgrade instructions don't work for everyone

Best method is to boot normally then run Setup from USB, DVD or extracted / mounted ISO.

I have 2 x 2009 laptops running fine, as do many others. 1 x AMD and 1 x Intel

Most manufacturers will say something similar. The truth is you won't know unless you try. In the majority of cases your hardware will be fine with the built-in drivers. One or two of the 20+ devices in your PC may have minor issues, often caused by the old software/drivers carried over from the upgrade.

If you image first, you can go back. It took me 20 minutes to image a PC yesterday, having never downloaded or used Macrium Reflect (free) before.

Well done. In my case the processor is
AMD Turion II M520
Cores 2
Threads 2
Name AMD Turion II M520
Code Name Caspian
Package Socket S1 (638)
Technology 45nm
Specification AMD Turion II Dual-Core Mobile M520

and the network card that had a problem
Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter

All academic now as everything working perfectly

Drivers can be a continuing problem when W10 tries to force them during mandatory updates.

My Atheros WiFi is fine, but forced Touchpad driver caused BSODs.

As W10 Pro, I can block updates most of the time and re-install old Touchpad driver if necessary.

W10 Home requires the W10 Hide Updates Tool if you get further problems.

I recommend making regular restore points (Win+R systempropertiesprotection )

and System Image Backups to an external backup drive http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

Thanks for telling me that, but seriously, will manufacturers want to spend too much time and money issuing updated drivers for what is really ancient hardware?

Maybe yes, maybe no.

Our machines might be 2009, but how long have their wifi cards continued in production or the code?

I am annoyed with forcing driver updates. We have been accustomed to not updating drivers, unless necessary, for many years.

Force Windows updates if you must, but not my drivers.

What build is that?
Sorry. No idea. Would be helpful if MS declared it wouldn't it?

I have just three days left to make my mind up on the free upgrade to 10.

Install or not install?

I'm running 8.1 with zero problems, use Classic Shell (XP style) because i don't like faffing with 8 style of 'apps', and everything works!

As some things i have in such as Autoroute, Photoshop, etc etc are 'non-original' () i imagine 10 screwing stuff like that up.

Is it worthwhile hitting the button or not? It's either doom or a boon, i really don't know.

Stay put. If you are happy with everything and it's all set up - why bother changing?! Stuff I have that runs on 7 didn't run on 8.1 and didn't on 10; so in that respect you've more to lose than gain.

But you have 31 days to roll back...but no idea if the roll back is to the exact point you left with evertyhing in the place you liked. Anyone??

I rolled back from W10 to W8.1 and it went to the original state before the upgrade. But it's always a good idea to create a backup that will do that should Windows fail.

Thanks. I think you've both just made my mind up for me!! Can i ask you 'Ivan' why after loading 10 you have since rolled back to 8.1?

I'm in a very similar position to you, with 8.1 and Classic Shell, and everything running smoothly. I also have a small business and so I can't risk anything going wrong on my main computer. My laptop is windows 7. I'm thinking of upgrading my partners laptop first, and see how that goes.

Do what I did, make a disk image just before updating to Windows 10, then see if it suits you. You can use Macrium Reflect Free (waiting to be banned for spamming ) to easily do that. If you're not happy with Windows 10 or you get a severe problem with it, it's trivial to restore the system back to where you had it. Personally, I would trust an image restore rather than the rollback feature. Also, it means that you can go back when you like, not restricted to a month.

I do like a few things about Windows 10 and have been a little more impressed than I expected, but I can't say it's that revolutionary compared to what I was using before. Windows 8.1 has been fine for me and I have had no problems, it's been rock solid in use, plus I didn't particularly hate its interface, as I came back to Windows after twelve years not using it (I do prefer Windows 10's, though). However, that's based on my usage and can only apply to me.

That's not to say I'll be going back, though. Unless something serious happens that I can't remedy, then it's more likely than not that I'll be sticking with Windows 10. I wouldn't have said that just prior to upgrading a few days ago, but Oilman was right to say that it grows on you. Anyway, as I said, going back is trivial if you make a disk image, so I don't feel under any pressure to stay if I don't wish to.

I had sort of half made my mind up a few months back tbh. Whilst recognising some software eventually might not be 8 compatible, by the time that happens 10 will long be obsolete, we will be on 15 or 20 (skys the limit so who knows?!!), and my current pc will be replaced with a brand new one with W15, 20 or whatever already installed!

All the hype about having a 'new experience' etc is just nonsense to me.

I thought I'd download Windows 10 onto my laptop, which I rarely use, so don't mind too much if it cocks it up. It's been on 'starting download' for about 4 hours now, with no progress bar to give a clue as to how far it's progressing.
