I hate that saying, if people did that, everyone would be in the same position all their lives and never move forward.

Can I ask a quick question?!!!!

My family laptop, which currently has Windows 7, as indeed got that icon in the bottom right corner of the Task bar, informing me about Windows 10.

As I understand it, my laptop, will download Windows 10, but will not install it - correct?

I don't want a family member going to use the laptop and then they get a pop up asking if they want to install Windows 10 - and they just click "yes", to just get rid of the pop up - before I have managed to back up their files?!!!!

That scenario could happen. It will download the files and then it will tell you it's ready to proceed. You may have to click through several message boxes though, not just confirm one.

OOH I've got that folder on my hard disk now

Tried to be funny and click on setup to see what would happen but boot.wim couldn't be found so I suppose you not allowed to do it yet

I suspect the entire Internet will slow down for the next few days with 3GB of data per GWX PC downloading the update.

Slightly less bandwidth for porn.

The ISPs have been briefed and some traffic shaping scenarios will be in place, much like an Apple iOS update day.
But yes, this will be a big one, probably the biggest.
Then the next few days the google search will get hit with 'start menu', 'driver download' 'how to ... in windows 10' etc.

For those with the update, have you tried altering your date to 30th Aug and disable auto update to see if its timed to install after tommorrows date as its already downloaded to the machine.

I'd hope MS would be using Akamai and friends (who will have caching servers close to or within the ISP's networks) to lessen the load

Quick question.

I have windows 7 home professional and have windows 10 to download automatically and wondering if it would be wise to upgrade windows 7 to pro before updating to 10.

Or will it be the same price if i upgraded from windows 10?

Ive noticed my window update icon has changed and had a large update today.

Thanks for any help.

Shaun.

From what I heard it will have been already downloaded by now and will come available tomorrow. Not a hope in hell will MS servers be able to cope with everyone trying to download tomorrow. I hope I am right as they haven't exactly been speedy with windows phone updates and stage roll outs as such.

Back up their files right now then at least you will have a fall back position that's just days old and not weeks or months.

I guess you mean W7 Home Premium. It will upgrade to W10 Home
W7 Pro to W10 Pro

Up to you if you want to use your W7 Pro License on the machine or keep it for another machine.
Differences between Home and Pro are not significant for many users.

If you do, upgrade to W7 Pro first, then W10 when the option appears

Throttling will be used no doubt and the whole shebang with reserving your download is here so that everybody else will likely be refused the download and even not all with reservation will get it by tomorrow. And yes, some may already have it.

So following a windows update which lasted almost all of my lunch hour and slowed my machine practically to a halt, I now have a shiny 2.63 GB install.esd file on my W7 desktop PC.

I have the $Windows.~BT folder on my W8 laptop but it's just 140 MB atm.
