Same here. I got the update, new Start menu etc. No adverts.

You don't get the Office one that pops up sometimes?

No error code. I tried the tool and left it, when I got back the PC had shutdown, on bootup it reverted to previous version. At least it works.

No, but to be fair I have the full version of Office installed.

No...I don't get anything like that on any of the machines with W10.

Odd, isn't it. I wonder if some people just regurgitate stories they've read, rather than actually having Windows 10 and forming their own opinions.

There are no adverts in Windows 10, and I defy anyone to post a genuine screenshot of one.

Never had that pop up on my PC but then I removed the "Get Skype" and "Get Office" as described in your other link. In fact since I don't have a Microsoft account I removed the majority of the apps.

Since you didn't upload that yourself I'm going to file that under R for 'regurgitated'.

I've got an ad on my lock screen just now.
Something about "Play it Smart. Gear up for school now" Against a Store icon.
When you click it it brings up the Store at a page of 'Back to school' apps.

So there's no point people trying to pretend there are no ads.

I can only assume that you've elected to allow W10 to suggest new apps. Some apps are free, others you pay for. Was it the fact that the suggestion (which you had unwittingly requested) was for a pay-for app that made you feel you were seeing an advert? I mean, if an unsolicited pop-up appeared showing an advert for Burger King you might have a point.

Computers rely on the user to tell them what it is that they want. If you don't want to have new apps suggested to you I suggest you opt-out, rather than opting in.

WhatJoeThinks said "There are no adverts in Windows 10".
Seeing as there are, that was rather a silly thing to say.

Yes, they could probably be turned off somewhere if they bothered me, but that's not the point.

I wittingly allowed suggestions on the Start menu. Don't think there's an equivalent setting for the Lock screen, unless it's covered by the same radio button?
Anyway, they don't bother me at all, but they're not a product of my imagination.

I repeat my assertion. There are no ads in Windows 10. You make it sound like Microsoft have decided to fill in some of the whitespace on your desktop with banner ads, when in fact you asked it to suggest new apps when you set it up, and that is all that it is doing. When I upgraded to W10 I declined each and every 'feature' that I didn't want - which was pretty much everything to do with apps. You didn't do that.

Ahh.. so you wanted to see suggestions on the Start Menu, but when you're offered Start menu functionality from the lock screen you feel like you're seeing unwelcome 'adverts'? Okaay...

I think you're deliberately missing the point.

You said there are no adverts in Windows 10. No mention of welcome or unwelcome, chosen or not chosen; according to you they don't exist.

Probably poor choice of words on your part?
You perhaps meant to say that there are no adverts that can't be turned off by the user?

What do you think constitutes an advert?

As you probably know, advertising is the major revenue stream in a variety of media. There have been some suggestions that Microsoft are attempting to monetize their OS by placing advertisements. That is to say, advertisers would pay MS to show ads on your Start menu (or wherever).

Asking W10 to show you suggested apps (presumably those that are new, trending or on special offer - who knows?) is not the same thing at all.

You're just embarrassing yourself now. By default, Windows 10 displays ads. If you don't want to see the ads, you have to opt-out or uninstall specific apps. This doesn't change the fact that, by default, Windows 10 most certainly does displays ads.

No point complaining you are seeing something that you could have declined at set up.
There are no 'Adverts', you are getting 'tips, tricks and suggestions' that you requested.
If you no longer want them, turn them off.

Basically a notice bringing a service, application or product to your attention, whether paid for or free.

Well, as others have pointed out, the 'suggestions' are on by default. You have to choose not to see them.
But they're certainly adverts within the accepted definition.

advertisement
ədˈvəːtɪzm(ə)nt,-tɪs-/
noun
noun: advertisement; plural noun: advertisements
a notice or announcement in a public medium promoting a product, service, or event or publicizing a job vacancy.

Whether Microsoft makes any money out of them is another matter, but they do point to paid for apps as well as free ones.
