Only 2.62GB here.....Not sure why it would ramp up to 4.41 GB...any ideas?

Change the date to 30th and disable auto update for date and time. See what happens...

Dunno, it is just over 3GB on my laptop and both machines had previously only had clean installs.

It does stay at 140mb for sometime, a few hours for one of mine this morning and then bingo.
Everyone is also noticing its around 16760 files and between 3.500 to 3600 folders when complete depending on your system setup for pro.
Also you may notice some Windows 10 Pro failed messages in windows update, no worries, that part is not active yet.

Not seeing any Aussies have it installed yet, as it is 29th July there.

I don't need to do the above. I already have the same results as the other guy simply by having the Insider preview installed and letting it update to build 10240. Mine is no more a preview than yours is.

Whether this is the way the official free upgrade process is going to work, I don't know”

Or you could just wait one day. Since you have the files there's no reason to keep you waiting longer.

I can't find a folder in the Windows directory though.

Not quite - for the reasons below

The difference being that you get the "proper" windows 10, not the preview, and therefore I'd presume without the restrictions the insider version has - like the microsoft account requirement, forced updates that may break the system, etc

There's more to it than build number

By 'forced updates' are you referring to future Insider updates?

Yes. That's presumably why the insider version is going to be "free" - because it has those restrictions and the possibility (despite the effort MS will put into it) that it might break your installation. You have to keep up to date for the machine to stay activated, as I understand it. Not something you'd necessarily want to run on a business critical machine.

The retail / free upgrade versions won't do that?

Yeah, I won't be getting further Insider updates as I went into the advanced update options after getting build 10240 and opted out of the Insider programme. Funny that they let me do that, what with this not being 'proper' Windows 10.

Then your copy of Windows will expire at some point, if it was a clean install

http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwin...review-builds/

Quote:
““I want to opt out of the Windows Insider Program on 7/29.”

If you decide to opt-out of the program and upgrade to the 7/29 build you will be subject to exactly the same terms and conditions that govern the offer* that was extended to all Genuine Windows 7 and 8.1 customers. This is not a path to attain a license for Windows XP or Windows Vista systems. If your system upgraded from a Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license it will remain activated, but if not, you will be required to roll back to your previous OS version or acquire a new Windows 10 license. If you do not roll back or acquire a new license the build will eventually expire.”

It wasn't a clean install. It was an in-place upgrade on a licensed 8.1 Pro installation.

Is directx 12 coming with this upgrade tomorrow or is it coming later?

I've got the $Windows.~BT directory now, which is listed as:
Size: 5.97 GB (6,416,723,568 bytes)
Size on Disk: 4.41 GB (4,739,932,160 bytes)
Contains: 16,774 Files, 3,592 Folders

I read a claim that people who took part in the trials would be prioritised but I presume that's incorrect since my computer has downloaded it.

My W8 laptop now has the $Windows.~BT folder although there is no install file, just two sub folders which total up to 10.6MB. Doesn't look like its increasing either.

My main W7 desktop has nothing

There are millions of W7 and 8.1 PCs who might upgrade, so it is likely to be done in stages. You may not get it through the official process tomorrow (unless there's some way to force it manually)

Does the folder sit on the desktop?

It's on the root of the C: drive but it's a hidden folder so you have to set your file manager to show hidden files.
