Updates these days try not to interfere with the general day to day running of a machine so its probably better just to take the dog down the pub for a few jars then have a long bath.

Also new machines can have loads of crap installed which may interfere with the process.

There's no crap installed, I made sure.

Do MS update the W10 ISO on a regular basis? The reason I ask is that last week I fitted an SSD drive in a friends PC. She purchased W10 from MS and I burnt the ISO to DVD booted up the new machine and it simply installed. Installed the motherboard drivers and its all gone smoothly. She's had a few updates but they install when your not using the computer and were not big.

Since upgrading to windows 10 I have had regular updates almost weekly over the last month. It can be a little annoying as I usually close things down on an evening. You then have to update it during the day. Luckily the last 3 updates haven't taken long but one took almost 30 minutes to update.

The iso is updated each time there is a build upgrade but not that frequently thereafter. The new cumulative update model is such that it does not really make much difference if you installed updates or not.

Contrary to popular belief the cumulative update does not just grow and grow. It can shrink as well as stuff can be removed or replaced with more efficiently coded versions. It is sort of like differential backups from Macrium Reflect Free.

The new model is far superior to the old style windows 7 update where you had to install old updates and then install updated versions of the updates - it was like a merry go round at times!

So in summary, Windows 10 is always updated with a new build but not that frequently but makes little difference anyway.

Still bloody waiting, no sign of the update. I'm hoping the WIndows Update delivered one works better than the media tool, all three installs so far have rolled back during the migrating data phase

BIB is incorrect. This is why MS are moving to differential updates. I have to say after the initial congratulatory back-slapping on the release of AU, things have been on the slide, updating has been pain and misery.

Backup all MS and non-MS existing drivers with Double Driver. Even W7/8/8.1 drivers may be useful in future.
Uninstall old/unused programs
Run Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe or even cleanmgr.exe /maxclean)
Run Windows Update
Disable AV
Disconnect from Internet during Install (disable Wifi in Device Manager / Unplug ethernet cable)

As far as I know, offline install via Media Creation Tool is still the most reliable method

Not incorrect but still not that efficient. I can assure you sometimes the cumulative update has actually shrunk but MOSTLY it increases. The new method will be more efficient still.

The photo app has suddenly changed on my laptop. Instead of scrolling through pics using the mouse wheel and using the bottom right corner buttons to zoom arrow ad delete buttons are now at the bottom centre of the page and is much more awkward to use. Is this an update or have I pressed something accidentally? How do I change it back?

So can you confirm, if I miss a couple of months of Updates, including 2 x Cumulative Updates, it doesn't matter, as long as I then start updating again?

The Photos App has been updated, if you don't like it then find another in the MS Store.

Think it was installed on one of the recent Windows 10 updates, go to the MS Store for updates to it, and other Photo Apps. The Old App is not in there.

Yes - that is its major strength as you do not get stuck in the updates to update type of loop of earlier versions. I recently updated an old laptop that had not had any updates on AU since it came out as I had been a bit lazy keeping it up to date and it just updated to latest version with no sweat.

Thanks. That will be handy for my 2 x W10 Pro laptops that dual boot with W10 Home and W7 (effectively 4 machines)

I don't think the W10 feature of grabbing updates from each other, instead of re-downloading from MS, is working for me.
I can of course download the offline KBxxxxxx installers but WU also fails to recognise when I have manually installed them and wants to redownload automatically.

It's all a bit of a faff and bandwidth hungry with Cumulative Updates at 800MB a pop.

Talking of photos, when you view them, in the old days of Windows 7, when you used the scroll wheel on your mouse it would zoom in and out on the photo, now it moves to the next picture.

Is there a setting I am missing to bring this old functionality back?

The updates sometimes do that. It you want the update and auto is not playing ball then go to the MS website, download the update and install it manually - it's not difficult, just a few mouse clicks.

I think it wasn't understanding the anniversary update correctly. I didn't know at the time it was like a whole new installtion of Windows 10 which was going to leave me with a windows.old folder etc and change half my settings...

I thought I was quite savvy when it came to windows but 10 seems to be my nemesis so far, we dont match, there are issues between us at the minute.

I would sell my soul (maybe not) to go to Windows 7 and never have to put myself through this again, unfortunately, it is a brand new laptop with 10 installed so unless I want to pony up for a Windows 7 licence and go through the clean install process, I am stuck with this - a decision only I can make.

Also, can I no longer put 'My Computer' on the desktop anymore? If not, why not?

'Make Windows your own' it says only as long as its what we say you can do...

Clicking the folder on the taskbar is basically the same as My Computer. I can't find anywhere that will allow it to be sent to the desktop.

the original windows photo viewer is still on Windows ten, or it was. this link will show you how to get it back, I find it far better than the app that is on windows 10

"My Computer" is now called 'This PC'. But you can always rename the desktop icon if that makes it more familiar for you.

As RobinOfLoxley's link shows, you can still put the icon on the desktop. Just type "icons" into the search box and the Control Panel item 'Show or hide common desktop icons' will be there.
Tick the box against 'Computer' and click Apply and OK.

If it still doesn't show then right click the desktop, hover over 'View' and make sure 'show desktop icons' is ticked.

ETA: If you knew all that, but are still having problems, then explore the sites in RobinOf Loxley's link for a solution.

Hope that is just for work use and not general stuff, I dislike forced IE to go on stuff like Twitter.

Haha, thanks for the tips, will try later.

What about using the scroll wheel on the mouse to zoom in and out? Has that gone now?
