EDIT: Ah, it says Windows Photo Viewer is still there (in the first link I clicked on) but it doesn't appear to be installed on my Windows 10 build.

EDIT2: Ah, the anniversary update appears to have fixed this now by default, it now zooms in instead of moving to the next picture.

You won't find a copy of Windows Photo Viewer on your PC by searching for it as it does not have its own .exe file, but if you right-click on an image file then select 'Open with...' it might be there as an option. If it is then tick 'Always use this program' (or WTTE) and you can kiss the new Photos app goodbye.

Nah it's not there I assure you, I click on more apps to show the full list and the only thing that has windows in its name is windows media player, there is no other photo viewer other than the stock one, I'll post a screenshot if necessary?

I didnt really want to go through the registry, why do they have to make you jump through hoops? Why cant it just be an option save doing that?

Perhaps you could try coaxing it with small pieces of cake or cheese instead?

Seriously though, all you have to do is follow the link (or just click here) then double-click the .reg file to apply the registry edits. What's the problem?

Right click a photo file, eg .jpg
Select Properties
Near the top you will see Open with ....
Click the Change button

It asks you "how do you want to open .jpg files from now on?"
Select Windows Photo Viewer from the list below.

Repeat with any other file types you want, eg .png

Yes, I thought we would get away from the frequent updates of previous Windows version but recently its been a nightmare. Every time I open up the laptop to just do something quick, I seem to have a tedious wait for it to configure an update. I wish they would limit it to at least one incremental release per month.

What Windows 10 demonstrates to me more than anything is that a great many people simply cannot adapt to change. I had the AU update like most other users, it wasn't a problem nor did it undo all my previous settings.

I think most people just don't spend any time looking at their new install in the first place. A small amount of time spent looking at settings and personalising them would save hours of grief and lots of posting questions.

It would also stop people bleating about wanting to go back to a now old operating system when the new one is far better.

One of the most annoying Windows 10 faults for me is that on shutting down, the screen is switched off well before the hard drive. If you disconnect your machine from the mains at night I suspect this could easily lead to problems if you disconnected while it was still active.

This would only work if you did an upgrade. If you did a fresh install WPV won't be there and you will need to do the registry hack.

Why would you unplug it? Surely the most annoying Windows 10 faults for you are things that have actually affected you, rather than things you think might be a problem for people who immediately unplug their PC after telling it to shut down.

So it's one of the most annoying Windows 10 faults for you on account of the fact that your brother likes to switch his PC off at the mains, and you think that he might see the screen switch off upon shutdown and immediately pull the plug, which you suspect could easily lead to problems? Wow, that's a real doozy.

That's not a bad idea, if you live in an area that gets lots of power cuts, and you're not confident of the surge protection on the socket.

I recently had a computer PSU knocked out by a spike when the power returned.
The power was only off for a minute or two, so no time to go round switching things off.

I only put my laptop into hibernation
That way I dont need to wait before commencing work.
Only when I install windows 10 updates will I do a restart.

i have no idea if it have happened or not, but if there is a chance of it happening then it will affect people,
My reply to you was in response to "Why would you unplug it?" there are plenty of reasons why people do unplug or switch their computer off at the mains.

i do not use windows 10 myself and I do not remember if the screen went off before the computer shut down or not, I know it does on Windows 8, so I presume it does on 10.

there are plenty of annoying faults with 10, but for me the above is not one of them.
