If you go on MS Tech or other Tech forum sites they can be fanatical about not using 3rd Party Apps and give you a right telling off.

"DO NOT use Partition Wizard, you will WIPE YOUR WHOLE MACHINE. Boot to Command Prompt and USE DISKPART"

They usually don't bother to explain what Diskpart is or how to use it.

Not at all, it was a legit update, just wondered if anyone else had suddenly started getting the message.

Many versions of Windows get this activation glitch from time to time. Just ignore it, and it will probably disappear as quickly as it appeared.

Because it's usually those individuals who continually moan about every little nuance of a new product not being like their old one. If that's the case the answer is simple, stay with what you know and obviously love and leave the future to others.

Alternatively, go with what's new, but find ways to customise it the way that's closest to what you feel comfortable with. Things like Classic Shell allow you to do this. Seeing that it doesn't hurt you if those who want to exercise choice find ways to tinker with Windows 10, then your objections come off as quite churlish and arrogant. It could be argued that you're the one not embracing change, because you're objecting to others trying to find ways to change something to to better fit their circumstances. The future shouldn't mean one way (Faust's way) to do something.

BTW, I don't use Classic Shell or anything like it in Windows 10, but then that's my choice as much as it's the choice of others to do so.

I agree with you 100%, for years people have changed stuff on windows, the colour, the look using software like Windows blinds, changing defaults, going by Faust books, should people stick with paint, notebook, media player, internet Exploder/Edge or any other software Ms includes?

3rd party Start menus became popular because MS made such a mess of windows 8, the start screen was awful, classic shell made windows 8 usable again, well for me anyway, still not that fond of windows 8, but it is a bit more efficient than windows 7.

I know a few people who have Windows 10 and asked me about getting the old style menu back, yes there are ways in Windows 10 that give you a different menu of sorts, but it is not old style, so I install classic shell for them and tell them about start is back, which I think is better.

The problem is that we can not always stay with what we know, try finding a machine with windows 7/8 on these days is getting difficult and will soon become impossible due to MS now deciding to stop supplying older version of windows to OEM, may be able to find keys for sale online for a while longer.
Ms have said that 6th gen processors will not be supported on older version of windows, what ever that means, we are still not sure, some people think it means that it will be difficult to install due to drivers for chipsets and usb ports, but it could be more.
I am updating my computer next year, new CPU, that is if AMD get a move on with their new CPU, so I may have little choice but to use Windows 10.

You say people should stay with what they know and yet if someone said they was still using windows Xp, people have a fit on here, oh you should not be using that, it is outdated and not supported any more, you can get hacked and all that sort of crap.

I got it with windows 8.1 not so long ago, but it cleared itself up after a week.

i have not subscribe to a service, it paid for it outright as a replacement for the start screen on windows 8 and they do a version for Windows 10, that I can still use my key for the Windows 10 version.

It cost me a grand total of $3 US , not going to break the bank and when i instyalle windows 10 on here I tried to use the menu that came with it, but I did not like it, so start is back gave me the menu back I like.

I was only pulling your leg. To my mind, there is no other 'obvious' reason to avoid registering it. Apparently the only difference it makes is that some customisation features become available (wallpaper?) and, most importantly, it stops reminding you to register it.

Or it could be argued these users are going forward into the past. These are the type of people that can't adapt to new situations. As a manager in a large organisation before I retired I would often come across people like this. They would singularly fail to see the reason for adopting new working methods and always wanted to do things 'the old way'. You could discuss, cajole and try your best to get this type of worker to change but it would often result with little success.

In the end they would be told if they couldn't adapt then it may be better if they looked for alternative employment. This final ultimatum often did the trick and you know what, quite often these same people were the keenest advocates of the change a few months down the line.

The new start menu is simply a 'better' updated version of what has gone before. What's not to like?

Anyone else here like me who had absolutely no problems installing W10 and have no problems using it? Anyone else here just fire up their machine and actually use it without the urge to tinker about....just use it?

I can cope with change, and try not to tut too much over extra clicks and navigation methods, but what really gets my goat is that Taskbar features often have an unacceptable lag to load.

W7 was instantaneous.

Lag may be half a second, 1 or 2 seconds or many seconds.


Just took me 3 clicks, with a few seconds between, to launch Touch Keyboard (right hand side of Taskbar). Try it yourself.

Then there are the people who just passively accept what they're given and are not willing to change anything to better suit their needs. There are also the people who think that not changing something from what's given to them is a virtue and proclaim loudly that that way (their way) is the only way. Seems more to be a lack of appreciation of change dressed up falsely as a claim to be moving forward and embracing change. What you seem not to like is that people are changing their systems the way that you don't like by using things like Classic Shell, even though it doesn't affect you (you haven't been forced to install it).

We can spin this one way or the other, but I fail to see the issue with user choice, particularly as it's not directly affecting you. By all means advise and educate, but stop with the haughty sermonising what's best for them when you're not them and don't share their particular usage.


Well, I'm fairly agnostic about it myself and haven't bothered to change it beyond normal tinkering (removing entries and disabling some features), but I'll leave what's considered "better" to the user who's using their machine. Their machine, their rules. Your machine, your rules. My machine, my rules.

I believe MS actually promote that W10 is customizable (and that it is the Best Thing since the discovery of Fire)

The whole concept of general purpose machines is to re-purpose them.

Even when you get a brand new machine, and do nothing to it, it is rather irritating to click on Store, for example, to get an MS Approved App but you get a BSOD, or other Error.

Or you get a crappy Auto update which does the same.

There is no polite way to say it - these people can't cope with change. Of course it's their machine but facts are facts.

You haven't really got the hang of this, have you? You're supposed to have a tiny, tiny, limited viewpoint. Your viewpoint must be the only valid viewpoint. At no point must you tolerate someone else's viewpoint. Trying to have a balanced, reasonable viewpoint is simply unacceptable.

Thinking about this thread, I believe that the people moaning and groaning about W10 are the ones who get the MS 'black helicopters' following them (Co-owned by Google of course).

When Windows 10 starts deciding who's to be one's partner, then that might be the time to turn off updates.

Yes, Total of eight machines upgraded and all running without fault. No TP programmes to change anything on any of them.
