Printer is not that old, in fact it is still being sold, scanner is a oldest, but it works on Windows , with a bit of fiddling, CPU is still sold and the motherboard is still sold or an updated version of it, CPU is only just over a year old.
All works fine with Windows 8 and by all accounts if they work on windows 8 they should work on ten, since drivers are more or less the same. What about my sound card, why do windows ten keep installing drivers for it that do not work? i install drivers, it works fine for a couple of days and then Windows ten decides the drivers are no good and install it own drivers that do not work. sure it is the same chip set, but modified by Asus. I've still got three un-used Windows 7 Ultimate, I can send you one and it will solve your problems if you want, no charge. |

Then its maybe just the case that you and all your 'mates' who have problems are unlucky? You've told us all so many times of your scanner problems with W8.1, your running an old motherboard etc your system is a hotch potch and needs updating chap.

I admit the main board is getting on, I just found the order date, Ordered on 28 June 2012 AsRock 970 Extreme3 Motherboard for £79.42, wow, time flies. Time to update? Maybe, but to be honest once the machine is working it works fine, it is just when Windows decided to do one and play up that problems starts. Computer been running for a while now with no problems. As I have said I waiting to see what happens next year with AMD and see what their new zen architecture is like. i have got about £500 to spend on the update, already put by, i can spend more than that if needed. I am also putting a bit more to it each month, if I spend it all then I do, if I do not not then it can stay in the bank. I only need new CPU, board and memory, going for something like 32GB of memory and if Asrock makes a board for the new CPU, I will go for them as to be honest Asrock boards for me have been great, even the cheaper ones I have built machines with. Video card is fine a AMD R9 280 over clock with 3GB of memory, and runs the video editing software fine. Hard drives are fine, a 2GB TOSHIBA spinny drive for storage, 120GB Corsair Force 3 SSD, which is used for storing clips on I am working on and for scratch storage, 240GB Corsair Neutron XT SSD for Os and software, a little 500GB Seagate hybrid, which to be honest is not really used that much, it got a couple of games on from steam and that is about it. My blue-ray writer is staying as well, so all i need to replace is board memory and cpu. Oh yes, sound card is staying as well. Quote:

Saying all of that, i decided to to put windows 10 back on this machine last night, I have an image already set up on one of my external drive, so I just let it do it thing last night and started to play around with this morning, like doing updates and stuff like like that. Disabled cortana, stuck a decent start menu on it and installed some software to hopefully stop the spying. new sound card drivers seems to have sorted out that problem, I have manged to get scanner working, lets hope it stays working, still two printers there, I have deleted one, lets see if it stays deleted. We will see what happens, thankfully most of the settings was set when I had it installed before, so they are still set. Just need to install my video software and we will see how it goes. Not saying i will not go back to windows 8.1, because no doubt in a few days time Windows 10 will do something that will annoy me and I will stick 8 back on. |

TLDR. There are workarounds for all problems. You are computer literate more than most. Look for the workarounds.
Disable Driver Updates, Enable Hardware ID Restrictions, use O&O Shut Up 10 etc etc The workarounds aren't necessarily easy for inexperienced people, and it would be nice not to have them, but there you go. They aren't that difficult either, if you follow step by step guides. Many throw their hands in the air and run around the room like their hair is on fire, or go begging to a neighbour/friend of course. Charge £20 a pop and you may find W10 becomes a bit more reliable to those you know. |

I know people who have done things to the registry, because they seen something on the net and it stopped their machine from working correctly, I back up my system as an image, so if it goes belly up, I can go back to the image, most people don't. You first part reply is just taking a huff on principle. Educate your 'clients'. Moan to MS in the meantime
For the second part, of course it is difficult charging family and friends, and I don't usually, but it can be done. I'll spend an afternoon fixing your computer if... You might give me a bottle of wine Invite me for Sunday Roast Look after my dog when I go away Water my plants It doesn't have to be a cold clinical '£20' |

Why do you want to pin programmes to recently used list ? It does not seem to me to be of any use. All my programmes are in the programmes list. My desktop has shortcuts to most used programmes. Quote:
I think what your post demonstrates is your unfamiliarity with the OS not an MS issue at all. I am with radioanorak in the post that follows yours. WhatJoeThinks also covers this very well.
The actual point is not the ability to start programs but the ability to jump to a recently used document with one click, rather than having to enter into the application first. |

You've all missed the point. At the top of the Win10 Start menu there is a list of most used programs, items were pin-able to this list in Windows 7. Its not the ability to start the program I am missing, if that is what I wanted I could just pin programs to the task bar which is what I have done.
The actual point is not the ability to start programs but the ability to jump to a recently used document with one click, rather than having to enter into the application first. ;… however, when I ‘right’-click on an application icon the most ‘recent files’ are displayed. For example, right-clicking the MS Word icon (be the icon in the Taskbar or the Win10 Start menu) displays the last 15 files that I’ve accessed in the ‘most recent’ order. One click then starts the application and opens the selected file. I run MS Office 2007 Pro-Plus and I’ve not done any arsing around with the Win10 Start menu. |

I was running a diagnostics on my NAS drive tonight because it's playing up. After about 2 hours it was on 70%.
Then suddenly without warning, Windows 10 restarts my laptop to install updates. 1 hour later I'm on 10% of installing updates. I have no control over this monstrosity and it appears not to consider the fact that people need to go to bed. If you use a windows laptop on the odd occasion, like I do, it is totally useless. It thinks that it's seamless but it's a million miles away. |

I remember being confused at first, because some things you can pin and others you can't. I quickly worked out what was going on. Now I completely understand the logic, just as I did with previous versions. I'm sure you can do the same. |

Stone Free, I haven’t read all the thread so apologies if I’m barking up the wrong tree here

Bollocks to installing Classic Start Menu. It will only slow you down. |

To be fair, labelling the section of the Windows 10 Start menu "Most Used" is a bit misleading. Like previous versions of Windows "Recently used" list (IIRC?) it's populated automagically by the OS, and you can remove items at will but not add them. I'm not sure how the computer decides which programs are "Most Used" but it seems to choose at random. It would probably be better if it were labelled "Most recently used, unless you already have that pinned, plus some things you hardly ever use" or something. I like to think or it as a little bit of space where the OS can try to be helpful, while I have all my tiles placed as I want them.

The bottom corner Windows logo IS the Start menu, only with more options. You can always make a shortcut to your most popular items on your desktop if your prefer. However, after just having typed that, I thought I'd quite like to have a shortcut to 'Shut down' in the task bar, but on right clicking on it to create one, the computer immediately shut down.

Very likely the touchpad needs a manufacturer's driver (eg Elan) which was lost when you did a clean install. Unfortunately advice on how to fix that is rather technical.
