There will be a utility for the hotkeys that needs installing. The laptop manufacturer will have this on their support site along with any drivers you are missing.
Yes. Mfrs Support Page should be first port of call. If the poster gives Make and exact Model of Laptop, we can check.

Note that, in my case, W10 assumes that a particular Synaptics Touchpad driver is correct and the HP Site gives me a dodgy one too. Both cause BSODs.

I use an old driver that works, but it was a pain to sort it out, and I use external wireless mouse mostly.

Once laptop is working, backup the MS and non-MS drivers with Double Driver.

i did clean install at microsofts advice now touchpad not workng can only use usb mouse please help not technical
You will probably need a Windows 10 System driver(s) from the Laptop manufacturer. On mine it's: System Driver, System Settings, Function Key.

There are some other optional ones, but those are not essential.

You install those, then you go to Windows 10 updates and hope....my manufacturers stuff all comes via that these days.

It's basically a Synaptics Touchpad with manufacturers customisations.

http://www.acer.com/ac/en/GB/content...oduct/5611?b=1

You could try installing the touch pad drivers on that page followed by the "Quick Access Application" and "Power Management" apps. Hopefully that will restore the use of the function key.

Looking at the Acer driver list possibly: Serial IO driver, and Touchpad Driver, Quick Access Application.

They also suggest running Windows Update.

I’ve been using ‘O&O ShutUp10’ for a while and it certainly appears to be a very beneficial tool,…on my laptop at least.

Since upgrading to Win10 my HP laptop ‘touchpad’ would sometimes go a bit wonky for 10-15 minutes at a time;…it was always associated with increased processor activity and the inevitable increase in fan noise as the temperature rises . HP laptops aren’t the quietest at the best of times.

The touchpad issue was obviously associated with Win10 and its myriad background activities.

However, ‘O&O ShutUp10’ has completely eradicated the touchpad issue,…the processor (and fan) activity is also very noticeably reduced, which can only be a good thing from a ‘heat’ point of view.

I didn’t agonise too much over the settings,…I just applied the ‘recommended settings’ under the ‘Action’ button and all has been well.

The ‘recommended settings’ do not switch off the Win10 auto updates and to be honest the updates (and Defender scans) happen in the background and I’m not even aware they are running. I certainly was aware before installing ‘O&O ShutUp10’.

Win10 covertly re-sets some of the ‘recommended settings’ in ‘O&O ShutUp10’ so you need to periodically check;…for example ’Telemetry 3 of 3 ’ gets switched back on quite regularly.

Since installing ‘O&O ShutUp10’ I haven’t encountered a single issue,….it’s all been positive.

I don’t know whether ‘O&O ShutUp10’ will suit everyone,…but so far it suits me just fine.

P.S. re-boot is much faster as well!

So, I changed my MS account password. As you do.

I sign into my PC with a PIN.

I reboot in Safe to troubleshoot an issue and 'password is incorrect'. I check, double-check and peek and then try my old MS account password and login is a success....

....feature or 'by design'?

Is it a failing that we have to use the password to login to the machine before it is cached as a 'local' password for the account? Surely, signing in should update the cached password whether sign in is by PIN or by password?

Thoughts, proofs welcome. TIA,

This new build I inadvertently installed has messed things up, aside from the start menu looking a total mess now the apps are shown half my desktop icons have reverted to white squares and my tiles are now devoid of half their programs.

Was only trying to update my clean backup but couldn't get updates to download, went to the website and 'upgraded', sigh.

Read they are bringing in a fix for the start menu apps, the sooner that goes back to how it was before the better.

You need to rebuild the icon cache by the sounds of it. It's quick and simple.

Use the batch file method https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...dows-10-a.html

Thanks, I'll give it a go. Yep, that worked, still some tiles missing in the start menu though, MS Paint has vanished.

Hi all,

I have decided to install Windows 10 (Clean install) It is showing as up to date with just 6 or 7 updates showing in the history. It also installed the anniversary update.

I was expecting a huge back log of updates as the OS has been out for several years. Been away from Windows for a few years are updates now cumulative?

Thanks

Windows 10 has only been out 18 months. It is on the third build - the new model is you get cumulative updates reative to the latest build - upshot is you only have to download one file now and then. Far more efficient now,

What a difference a week makes, it's getting to be a pain.

I didn't want a password when starting my PC so left it blank but due to the day long problems I had installing onto my new build, activating it and it being on an M2 drive in my despair I took the bait and made an MS account which then took control of my screen and made me enter a password every time, not to mention having my email address displayed across the screen is not on and looks messy.

Logged in and tried to change it to whatever cool name I like to give my PC but you can only change it to a first and last name, apparently a local account is less hassle but then I bet we'd be back with Vista - every time I touched a key I'd get a warning message popping up on screen.

In the end I did what I should have done at the start and unplugged every drive and it finally installed by itself.

Have to log into Nvidia now as well, if this is how aggressive a PC can be now I'm dreading the arrival of AI, those Terminators really won't be reasoned with will they.

1) to give pc whatever name you like, you should initially install with a local account, then change to MS account,

2) to remove email address - settings, accounts, sign-in options, privacy (click to off).

I appreciate that Windows 10 tries to push you towards having a Microsoft Account, but you can just keep saying no. You seem to be getting confused: I have no idea what you mean by 'log in to Nvidia' as that makes no sense.

When you download graphics cards drivers Nvidia Experience forces you to make an account and log in before it works now.

You don't need to login to just download and install drivers.

True, Stig, but it's nice having it notify you of new drivers and a single click downloads them, not to mention all the game tweaks in it.

Only when you first set the machine up, windows 10 tries to push you to a MS account or if you use the store, but once set up with a local account it do not do any pushing of an MS account.

Lets just say that the machines I have set up with Windows 10 and a local account, no one have told me they are being pushed to a MS account.

AMD drivers don't do that and no need to log in anything, if there is a new driver available a pop comes up saying that new AMD drivers are available. so glad i am with AMD.
