Windows Update only offers me 8.1 to update to. Do I have to update to that first or can I go straight to 10?

Am on Win8
If you want to upgrade, you must upgrade to 8.1.

I have an Office 365 subscription, but doesn't recognise that adress as a Microsoft account for some reasons, so won't let me use it.

I like the look, seems fresher and more clean.
Yes, it's ridiculous that you can't use your Office 365 login as a Microsoft account. You can create another Microsoft account with the same email address though. This was the same on W8.x.

I too like what I'm seeing of W10. The UI looks fresh and clean. On my Surface Pro 3 I can toggle between Tablet mode and Desktop mode nicely.

An upgrade path is only from 8.1 and 7.0 SP1, so yes, you need to update to 8.1 first if you want 10 for free.
If you want to upgrade, you must upgrade to 8.1.
Thanks for the info.

It says log onto the Internet to activate windows 10 what it suppose to say stig on the activation and point me in the direction of computer properties:
You can still use Control Panel
Right-click Start button > Control Panel > System and Security > System

or

Left-click Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation

Technically you have to upgrade to so-called "Windows 8.1 Update." But I assume once you get to 8.1 it will then take you to Update. If not, just keep running Windows Update until it does. It might take several goes.

Mine downloaded and is up and running, still working my way round but so far, no problems. It didn't take that long to set up either.

Used the media tool to download an iso which is currently burning to a DVD in case I need to do a fresh install at some point. Will attempt an upgrade first though (from 7 SP1).

The Get Windows thingummy was just saying We're validating Windows 10 for your PC so not sure how long I would have been waiting - it was saying something about a Broadcom Virtual wireless adaptor not having Win10 compatible drivers but as I connect my desktop via wired I'm not too fussed about that.

I have a very strange problem. When I restarted my download, having realised it had failed, following the instructions for clearing the folder and then the instruction to make it start again, it downloaded an empty folder and a few files, but nothing else. Yet Windows Update doesn't say there has been an error. I don't know whether it is just downloading very slowly, or if it has failed. If I try to delete files, they are apparently in use. No more files are appearing. It's a good job I'm not in a rush.

If I shut down my computer, will the download resume from where it stopped when I next restart it or do I have to go bak to the begininning of the process again?

No sign of it yet Windows Update history says it's failed 3 times so far, and there are no other updates to run (running 8.1 Pro).

Indeed this is very annoying - I thought Microsoft were talking about rectifying that once W10 came out. But seems like they've not done it yet. You're supposed to be able to link your Office 365 account at least.

They might process the Reserved user downloads first, but it isn't necessary to reserve at all.

I think it was probably just a marketing gimmick or something for an MS Intern to measure and provide a Report on

Ah! I fondly remember my copy of Windows 95 - It came on a gold coloured CD for £5 from under the counter at a local Computer Fair. (That was a lot of money back then!)

Well that's good news for people having problems with activation:

1. You are not alone.
2. It's them not you!
3. Keep trying and eventually it will work.

OK so I've only been using it for two days, but I haven't found any major bugs at all.

It even used some old divers that I thought it might object to but it didn't. It seems a lot easier on drivers than past windows versions. - I even have an old WI-FI dongle that I don't use much do it worked fine on XP but wouldn't work on Windows 7. Then some bright spark actually wrote their own Windows 7 driver for it, which he let everyone have. I plugged it in to Windows 10 and it loaded up a working driver for it without me having to do anything. So it seems a lot better thought out than old Windows versions. Far less driver headaches.

The one thing I don't like is the white windows on every folder you open. The edge are not clear enough for my eyesight. I have found how to make the border a solid colour which helps with visibility, but apparently it does have an "Aero" setting that gives it transparent borders like windows 7, but I haven't found out how to turn that on yet. The task bar is transparent but the window frame are solid and ugly.
This is an area where Satya Nadella ought perhaps to be commended. This time, he seems to have gone out of his way to encourage widespread pre-release testing and, better still, listening to all the feedback and bug reports.

I suspect that Win 10 will have launched with fewer significant bugs but that some niggles will still have got through though.
