I reserved my upgrade today (just in time), do I need to do a backup of everything on Win 7 before upgrading/installing?
Yes, you should always, always backup before doing something like this.

To be honest you should always have backups!

I've now upgraded my HP Win8 laptop to Win 10.

How can I now do a complete fresh clean install of Win 10? Is it possible with the laptop I have?!

I've upgraded to Windows 10. It felt like it took ages, but it probably only took an hour. They don't want people to use IE any more. It's hidden in Windows Accessories. All my settings in most programmes have been preserved.

You need this:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softw...load/windows10

Weather or not you can do it with your laptop or not I have no idea as you've not said what it is! LOL But I expect it would be fine to. Can't see any reason for it not to.

Thanks, it's a HP 255.

Just concerned that the key is built in to this version of Windows, so when I do a clean install, it may not let me... I may also have issued finding drivers for everything, unless W10 is clever enough to do it automatically?

Starting to sound like a parrot but recommend you make a full image backup on an external drive and then you can just try it.

Only issue now is that it removed some of the audio software with my Asus X200CA - the sonicmaster audio I think. So now the sound quality is not very good.

(For the 64 bit version) - C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe - Right Click on the .exe file and create shortcut onto the Desktop.

(For the 32 bit version) - C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe - Right Click on the .exe file and create shortcut onto the Desktop.

I've also just set Internet Explorer as the default as quite an important program I use daily doesn't seem to work with Microsoft edge. It can all be changed back again so it can be changed so that Edge isn't the default or hard to find.

I've tried twice now to create a USB drive image of W10 and received the 'Something happened' message, which I suspect will be enshrined in history like the BSOD.

I think if it fails the third time, I'll not upgrade. Too much hassle.

And anyway, before I upgrade W7 to W10, I want to test W10 on a clean partition, before 'overwriting' my W7 partition.

You can't.

The only way to get the free upgrade is to upgrade from the product eligible for upgrade (7 in your case) to 10. You can't tell it to put 10 somewhere else and keep 7 installed as well.

This activation is a pain in the ass

I bought the the 8.1 pro add-on for windows 8 which was media center for the laptop (which changes the product key) I can't activate and if i try to put my original windows 8 key in i get error installing product key on the laptop.

I'm wondering if i should change my windows 8 product key first on the pc to the first original one before i added media center on that before i upgrade to win 10

Thank you I'll do a backup soon but I thought the conditions said you have until 2016 to tqke advantage of the upgrade or did I read that wrong

I started to update my computer at 1pm today and it finished at 5pm. I had put a side half a day as I don't have the fastest laptop. Anyway once everything has installed and finished been installed at first I noticed that there was a problem and it seemed to slow right down. I uninstalled my Avira anti-virus and re-installed it again and it worked fine. My computer's cpu is an Intel Celeron running at 1.80ghz and it flies. From switch on to password screen 4-5 seconds. I use chrome as my browser and it opens instantly.

Yes there is bugs with Windows 10, but hopefully in the coming months those will be ironed out and I am well impressed with Windows 10.

You have till 29th July 2016 to make the upgrade to Windows 10, as long as you have Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 installed. More details here on this MS Windows 10 FAQ.

Personally, I'm waiting for about nine months before I take the plunge. Things are working fine here right now, so I'm in no rush to move on. I have a year to decide to jump.

I installed it over my Win 7, quite impressed with it, so far

Did not take long either on my desktop (about one hour)

Fired up Steam, Bandicam, Outlast, plugged in headset, made sure the sound was working.

Everything recorded fine, and the latest Direct X, will be good for gaming
