That's actually good to know. Shame it isn't better known.

As for your 2GB install with 64-bit? I imagine at the very least that must be a Dual Core processor, right? I can't imagine how slow it would be with single core and 2GB.

Same here. I am attempting to go from W7. My suspion is that a USB3 card I installed a few months ago may not be compatible with W10, or the AVG Tune Up, which I use, may be the cause.

I get to the stage where W10 is installing features. At the 30% mark it reverts to W7. Error number is C1900101-30018.

I am thinking about not bothering with W10 now as there is little point fixing something that is not broken.

I doubt it's stopping your upgrade, but I would REALLY uninstall something like AVG Tune Up before upgrading.

After the upgrade maybe go and get the absolute LATEST version and reinstall, but I really think its a bad idea to go through the upgrade with it in place.

JMO of course.

Also, ANY custom non-MS antivirus/security software. Remove it pre-upgrade.

It also may be complicating things if you have some complex partitioning on your hard drive. You yourself may not have done this, but if you have an old HP or Dell, I know they did stuff like that for years (to have complex system backup/restore schemes). One would hope this has all been anticipated by Win 10, but keep in mind it may not have been.

Speaking of HP and Dell, the bloatware (all their stupid little docks, custom software checkers, help center packages, etc.) they install could be a challenge to upgrade too. I bet the more of that you've uninstalled pre-upgrade attempt (usually just from Add/Remove), the smoother it will go.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windo...ations#sysreqs

Of course what they consider passable is debatable, which is why double that 2GB is what a lot of people have seen over the past few years works with Win 8+ well enough not to be agonizing.”

It wouldn't appear that the extra memory consumption is particularly worrisome, though - certainly not double.

There are additional issues to going with 32-bit - such as the possibility of not actually being able to address all RAM even below 4GB because of other things that occupy the address space, like video RAM - e.g. http://blogs.technet.com/b/markrussi...1/3092070.aspx

I stopped taking notice of MS' system requirements since the "Vista Capable" debacle

In case you have to go back to your ORIGINAL media and reinstall 7 or 8. Especially since people started making USB installs, they no longer have the little cards with license numbers on them--supposing they ever had them because vendors like HP and Dell did these annoying custom System Backup/Restore Disks instead (some which don't require you to input the key, but some which DO). And a lot of people had the Win key on a sticker on their old laptops which have long ago rubbed off (the clever companies put them under the battery, but most of them put them on the outside of the computer).

The point is, don't take any chances.”

Personally I found that the product key was the thing on the label that didn't wear away, even if everything else did.

It can be generic even before the upgrade - especially in Windows 7, where manufacturers like Dell don't go around putting individual keys into every installation - they use SLP (for 7 this is a combination of SLIC stored in BIOS + certificate in the OS + generic product key). So a key finder would give you a key that is useless (and well publicised across the internet), the only key that matters being the one on the COA sticker.

In 8+ this has become an individualised key, stored in the BIOS/UEFI

Booted up this morning and the email App (Program **** you Microsoft, they are programs!) and the calendar program that wouldn't work last night, now boot up just fine.

Of course they keep nagging for me to sign into my Account.

Installed first time in around an hour and half. Must say, really impressed with it so far! I'm loving Cortana's search, the new icons and even Edge! It's early days yet, but my laptop is faster now and feels like a new machine!

There's one particulair game that for whatever reason refused to play ball in 8.1 (not a modern game or anything like that) I install 10 and hey presto! Runs like it used to

Took about two hours to install (slow connection) and I forced the install by downloading direct from Microsoft website rather than waiting for permission. Installed Windows 10 Pro 64 bit

Very smooth install - only prior complaint was that I would need to reload Japanese language pack (don't ask - I don't need it anymore anyway)

Several "issues" seemed to appear regarding performance (Several games on Steam were unplayable initially, conflict between AVG and Windows Defender antivirus, default monitor setting were 1024:768) but rather peculiarly they seemed to sort themselves out after a few reboots. I was especially surprised that the Steam problem went away - is there something that Steam needs to do for eacg game to "tune" perfromance for Windows 10.

It does feel faster in use generally and the networking tool semm to "work" much better. I was afraid that my NAS WD MyCloud would cause problems but seems to be OK

Question - people are saying they are choosing between 64 bit and 32 bit versions?

Can you choose? I though 32 bit / 64 bit was fixed depending on previous install? Would it be practical / possible to install 64 bit Windows 10 over a 32 bit Windows 7 based around a 32 bit processor?

Yes noticed many had reported that during the technical preview.

What's the best program to use to clone my SSD 'C' drive before doing the upgrade?

I have upgraded my other desktop and so far so good although there were loads of crashes after the upgrade, but it seems to have settled down now.

What login settings are some of you using? I know there's either the pin option or the password (I doing it the same way I did 8 with the use netplwiz on the rum prompt and make sure no password needed much easier)

Can I go back to 8.1
I have just downloaded W 10 and plan to install this weekend.
If I don't like it can I go back to W8.1?
If so, how?
Thanks in advance.

It may have already downloaded, check your C: root for a hidden folder called $Windows.~BT.

You do have a month to go back to 8.1 there is a way but can't remember how to do it. I'm sure someone will explain how

The advert currently airing on TV doesn't make sense. It says that these kids are growing up with Windows 10 but in a few years time we'll probably be on windows 20.

Probably settings > update and security > recovery.

I get "go to an earlier build" as I was running the previews, but I'd guess that on an upgraded system it will let you go to 8.1

I'd be genuinely surprised if you don't like 10 though, it seems to have universal approval

Liking Windows 10 sodecided far- this is what Windows 8 should have been rather than the full screen tablet oriented shit Ballmer and Sinofsky made it. Though they're no longer at MS thankfully!

I would use Macrium Reflect Free or TOSDO Easeus Free (I prefer MRF).

You can clone an exact copy to another disk in a usb caddy.

Better still: just make an image file which you can copy to another disk as well for extra backup security. You will have to create a recovery CD or USB stick with other package. Also, make a backup image of W10 once you have installed it so you donta have to donwload, install etc.
