Last night had a pop up asking if I wanted to install Win 10. I chose instead to reschedule it for 16:00 today to give me a chance to do a full back up just in case.

Now at the time of posting it is just after 13:00 which to my thinking means there is another 3 hours to when I scheduled the upgrade. So how come I have spent the last hour or so looking at the screen of my laptop going through the Win 10 update?

I was actually typing out a reply on DS when a dialog box flashed up on screen for less than a second and then I found myself staring at a blue screen with RESTARTING in the middle. Which changed to Installing updates for Windows 10.

I can only presume that this dialog box that flashed up was something to do with updating. But why did it pop up several hours before I thought Windows was going to ask me to update. I have no idea what it was though as I presume it interpreted what I was typing at the time as some command to do something and closed the box almost before I had time to register it was there and certainly before I had any chance to read what it might have been saying.

Fortunately it seems to have installed Win 10 keeping all my apps and settings rather than doing a clean install which would have been much more annoying. But still annoying that it all kicked off without notice hours before I thought it would happen.

I got this a few times but then tried again whilst running in an 'Administrative privileges' account. I since downloaded all 4 of the major flavours.

I know there is no going backwards once 30 days have passed but do we have a ' no going forwards after going backwards' ?

I won't switch any main machine until 12 months but it would be useful to do 'point in time' tests in 3 months and 11 months time.

Yeah I was being a bit dumb when I said I had a 32 bit processing - the life's laptop is a core 2 duo which according to Intel is a 64 bit processor.

The option for 32 or 64 bit came up when I updated my desktop which is a i5 and ran Windows 7 Pro 64

Still confused though - I understand it would need to be a clean install to go from Windows 7 Pro 32 bit on the laptop to Windows Pro 64 bit - but would I be entitled to do this under the upgrade license?

EDIT To be honest even gaining the ability to ready 3 GB NAS drives directly isn't worth the hassle of a clean 32 bit install and then "upgrading" to 64 bit! Even if it were free. I'll stick with 32 bit.

That's not what the guy at Microsoft said, but I'll take your word for it, since you usually know what you're talking about when it comes to PC matters. Tbh, the guy at MS didn't make sense to me, as then any consumer could install W10 on a separate partition. According to the compatibility tool, my PC is upgradeable, but as it's over 4.5 years old, I'm not convinced yet all the hardware will work. If that is not the case I'd have to uninstall W10 and I'd be willing to put money on my W7 setup not being the same as it was before.

This 'Something happened' message didn't even come with an error code, let alone an error description. Hard to believe even MS could release an OS with that in 'the code' to the consumer/general public.

I've updated my computer from windows 8 to 8.1, but when I try to run the win10 tool, it downloads the update, verifies it and then disappears. Does anyone have an idea what is happening?

I've updated my windows 7 laptop to win10 and had no problems with that. After verifying it went on to download updates and then install Win 10.

I was using the same account I created when I first installed the OS, which has to be an administrator account.

ETA. What I'm going to try now, is right click on the MediaCreationToolx64.exe file, select 'Run as administrator' and see what happens.

No it's normal as its happened to a lot of people and the reason is because it hasn't downloaded fully yet and it is trying to make sure the installation goes as smooth as possible.

It say's on acer's and microsofts websites to just wait for it to notify you for the smoothest experience.

It also say's that it could take day's or even weeks. If you go into c: folder and look for the $windows file when you allow to unhide folders in system option/properties and you should see when you click right click on $folder and click properties you can see the size of the folder.

Mine is currently sitting at 3.91GB and someone on here already said that is should be 5-6 GB.

Just to add, this method worked. I ran the tool and told it to upgrade the machine to which it downloaded the files again. An hour later and I'm now running Win10 on my desktop.

I'm now running the tool again to create a USB pen drive version so I can then do a clean install.

Just make full system image of pc before install and after. Then you can swap backwards and forwards. Not sure how that would work after a year though?

I'm pretty sure you can't do a clean install first, you need to do the upgrade first so that MS can generate some hash in a database against your machine. This is why they aren't issuing licenses keys this time round.

Once you've upgraded you can then do a clean install as MS now have a record of your machine and know it's legit to install Win10.

Am I the only one who keeps trying to go to the charms bar and getting confused when it's not there?

For a laptop that is probably ok but you may struggle with memory intensive apps, and wont be able to efficiently run virtual machines etc.

Anyway, I don't think for a clean install it matters if you have 32bit or 64bit on pc.

Just my usual hobby horse but make a full image backup before you start so you can revert easily.

Make sure you know your W7 install code.

Nope your not, I was trying to access it a lot yesterday when in tablet mode

The main reason I want to update to Win10 is to get rid of the Charms bar.

Of course you can install W10 in a separate partition or blank hdd, but it is hard to see how it would activate.


However, I noticed W10 gets a new install code and does not reuse W7 code.

I wonder if MS have secretly decided to ignore the potential piracy issue working on basis that only a small minority will abuse things.

After all, the uptake on W8 was hamstrung by the huge number of people who remained W7.

I guess the acid test is to try it and see.

I can imagine when using Win 8 on just a desktop that the charms bar is a pain, but on a tablet it works well.

It's a shame they didn't include it in Win10 when you go into tablet mode.

Yes it is so annoying when you move the cursor near the edge of the screen and the charms bar come in, yet when you want it to come in it takes ages to swipe in.

They really should have made 2 versions of windows, one for tablets and touch screens and one for keyboard and mouse.

I seem to be in the minority that didn't mind W8. W10 seems ok so far though.

Mine is like 8 years old and shipped with Vista, it has gone through 7 and 8 fine, 10 runs like a dream on it all hardware was found and no issues whatsoever. I think I have the something happened error on one of the Preview builds, I simply tried again and it worked the next time.

It's how I've checked the time and shut down the laptop for last year or two, so strange it's not there anymore.



You're not alone I didn't understand what all the hate was about.
