Yes Windows Media Player is still there, so you can still rip your CDs.

It's version 12, which is the same version as in Windows 8 (I think). Only difference is that it now plays FLAC files natively.

Downloaded and installed (from the Windows 10 notification that popped up) in about 40mins, no problems at all and all working perfectly on my surface pro 3!

I like win 10 so far, but where has microsoft security essentials gone? all i can find is windows defender it used to be an icon near the clock on win 7

Upgraded mine last night via the forced upgrade link in the last few pages (thank you for that). It took two hours just to prepare and update before it eventually started to install.

As for Windows 10, it looks nice, but I am not keen on it as an operating system. I see Microsoft in their ultimate wisdom as forcing more mobile orientated sh!te onto the users of actual computers. It was said about Windows 8 they should not have forced the 'Mobile' layout onto everybody, and they did relent with 8.1 making a computer not frustatingly awkward to use. But they have take a further step in the wrong direction.

I know that Microsoft want to try and get into the mobile market, but a 'one for all' OS is not going to do that, you are just ruining all of your products with a middle of the road product. It is not truly optimised for mobile devices nor it is optimised for laptops and computers.
They should have split the OSes, making one just for mobile devices and continuing to do what they did best, making OSes for computers and laptops that actually worked.
I have a worry that the decisions they are making are only going to alienate them more in both markets. I hope not, because I cannot stand either Linux OS or whatever sh!t Apple threw at the design board and then released it.

It annoys me settings are spread across both the settings 'app' and Control Panel itself, with yet more setting being removed from CP to the app.

The start menu is bloody awful. Again designed to look more like a smartphone menu rather than a start menu on a computer. With the tiles it is far too big, there is no need for it to be that wide. And when you have the personal folder links enabled like I do, the recent apps are squeezed into a little bit at the top. I am going to try and install Start8 to see if it works.

Probably going to put my dodgy copy of W8.1 Pro back on too, and dual boot between the two, using 8.1 as my main OS and try 10 out.

Wow people panic and give up quickly at the mere sight of tiles. Start8 has already been replaced with a Start10.

This all happened just the same with Win8. There were Win8 Start Menu replacements out within days of the OS release.

I ran Classic Shell Free for a couple of months during the January to now Insider phase.

No choice. Some of the bugs (not aesthetics) made Start very unstable or just non-functional.

Start Menu X has a free and pro version. It has worked throughout the W10 insider programme and IMO is the best start menu replacement out there.
The Free version is more than adequate....The Pro version is not expensive should anyone actually need it.
Personally, I don't think a replacement is necessary once you learn how to use W10 properly.
If you don't like the tiles, just unpin them all and shrink the menu to just the popup items you have selected. Pin any regular folders to the 'File explorer' section..
Anything is easy to find just by starting to type or asking Cortana to open it.

I have read on other boards that the link does not work for a lot of people. I have to admit I don't know much about computers other then turning them on and getting on the net.
I am very happy with Windows 7, my computer a all in one Packard Bell runs very fast.
My hard drive has 289 GB which of that 226 GB is free. This computer is 4 years old. So if I get the update I do if I don't I don't.
I just don't understand why I am getting these failed reports in windows update. The get windows 10 tells me there are no problems with my computer, just have to wait a few days or weeks. I have also read that its best to wait for windows 10, not force it.

I love Windows 10 but hate Microsoft Edge. It's actually far worse than Internet Explorer, which despite its bad reputation, was never as bad as people made out. It was trailing behind Chrome and Firefox, but I didn't mind using it every now and then if I had to.

Microsoft Edge feels like that Metro version of Internet Explorer in Windows 8. There's hardly any settings or right click functionality, no add-ons or extensions and a totally messed up bookmarks menu that can't be edited even slightly. My bookmarks are listed from Z-A (with no way of changing it) and whenever I click a bookmark folder, a menu displaying the full URLs slides onto the screen from the opposite side. Drag and drop is non-existent and it feels like a separate entity to the rest of Windows. Chrome feels more integrated with Windows 10, which is a bizarre.

I don't know if Edge is still a work in progress or not. If it is, it should never have been released in its current state.

I don't seem to be using much bandwidth. The lights on my rouater are not flashing much my computer is not going mad. Today only one failed report in windows update since I swiched the computer on at 7am this morning.

One thing I will say about classic shell. For some strange reason it doesn't seem to like it if you install the insider hub because as soon as I installed it and try to go into the apps part of the start menu? it crashes

Start 8 works fine but after a few days, I am warming to the W10 start screen once I removed all the crap icons and just put the ones I wanted in small or medium size.

One tip when you click all apps, click on a letter and letter selection menu comes up, so you dont have to scroll through everything.

Mine had over six failed attempts.

Tried upgrading via the Command prompt method, but didn't work. So downloaded the media tool off Microsoft's website; the whole download and installation process took five bloody hours!

I hate Edge as well and have gone back to IE11 - I've even set IE11 as the default brower as one important program I use that uses a web interface wouldn't work with Edge. It would only ever fire up the default browser (which was Edge) and so wouldn't work. After finding out how to change the default bowers back to IE11, it now fires that up and works just fine.

Also in IE11 I like and use extensively the remembering of typed URLs at the top to get to regular places quickly. All Edge seems to offer is "Top Sites" and even selects that or a blank page when opening a new tab instead of my regular Google home page.

So in a browser I need Typed URLs remembered at the top and a new tab opening to my home page Google so that I can then search for something. Basic stuff but Edge doesn't or won't let you do any of that.

One good thing about the old touchy IE was that it used the settings from the big IE, even if you could only change them in the desktop version. I have restricted sites set up, Google playing the main role there and Edge just ignores that I mainly use touch devices with W10 so I need something touch friendly, which IE11 is not.

That's right. If you're really into that then don't upgrade. However, I gather there is some MS DVD pack thing you can install after upgrading. No idea whether it does everything media centre can do. My guess is not.
