How do I reserve a copy? I've got two computers with Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.
You should receive an icon in the system tray area after running Windows Update (if you don't do it automatically).

If you ever get fed up with the notice, Uninstall that said update

Windows 10 future updates question will microsoft be doing service packs updates with this? because if not somebody that doesn't need to do a fresh install maybe after 3 or 4 years could find themselves having around 400+ updates to re download from a fresh install if it comes to it.

It seems that the plan is for a new build of Windows 10 to be released every 4 months, and these releases will incorporate all the patches since the previous build.

If you need to reinstall you'll be able to do so straight from the latest build.

It never worked on both computers, so ended up following these instructions.

Doesn't look good for the force updates in Windows 10 Home as they could force any old apps such as buy Microsoft Office adverts on the tray.

Yep. It doesn't display any annoying messages/reminders at all. It doesn't bother me at all it being there. It's just basically like any other system tray icon.

They could perhaps make it like OS X where it downloads the latest build over the internet during recovery?

I have found the W10 new Build releases to be rather irksome.

They often set themselves going at inconvenient times and a whole raft of minor things are reset to Default which I have to manually put back how I like

I doubt the Get Windows 10 icon will be used to deliver advertising. That won't be in their interests at all, and the users wouldn't accept that.

What they are trying to do is get as many people as possible on Windows 10 soon. It makes life far easier for them and developers if most people are all using the same version of the OS.

Eventually there will perhaps come a time where they can spend far less time and effort supporting legacy versions. It also makes it far easier and faster to patch any newly discovered security holes. Without having to worry too much about patching legacy versions straight away with relatively few users. They could get updates less frequently.

Looks like they may start downloading bits of W10 to machines with reservations, a week before the 28th July, to ease the millions of downloads that are going to be needed on launch. The processes would just run in the background.
It's not sure yet whether this process will need permission, or not, to begin.

Which is why i don't understand why they're putting up even small barriers to adoption.

Windows 7/8/8.1 users get 10 for free, and now Windows Insiders can get a free copy too.

Now everyone and her dog could get a free copy if they're willing to jump through some hoops.

So why make them jump through hoops in the first place? Just provide Windows 10 Home without activation or product keys and allow individuals to install it for free.

Continue to charge OEMs for preinstalling, and businesses for the various Pro/Enterprise versions. Sure, some businesses will install the Home version instead, but they're the kind of businesses that already install pirate versions of Windows and get caught in licence audits (or get shopped by disgruntled ex-employees).

There are many millions of systems in places like China still running XP that desperately need to be moved to something more modern for the sake of everyone on the Internet. With the current situation i just have to hope as many as possible hear how to get a free copy of Windows 10 and jump through the necessary hoops in the next month. Microsoft could very easily solve this problem.

Despite the Windows 10 minimum machine spec published needed for it to run, many older PCs/laptops currently using XP are not really suitable. Its more than just the processor, it is also about the accompanying chip set and ancillary components. Sure Windows 10 will install and run but the hardware has moved on, so the overall user experience is poorer to that of a more current machine. Microsoft needs to draw a line in the sand somewhere.

I can see this as being part of the reason. But in my opinion it's more about getting the MS app store on as many PC's as possible as quickly as possible because I think there is a potentially huge revenue stream there for MS.

The regulators wouldn't allow it either.

What the Microsoft store needs is people making apps for it, Also things like Firefox and YouTube could really do with being on it too.

Just installed the Insider Preview on my Old Emachines ER1401 (AMD NEO II K325, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD) and it runs pretty well considering it's such a low spec machine!

Why does firefox and youtube need to be on there? Firefox can be easily installed from their own website and youtube works great as a website too.

The problem with that is some people use wireless and unless Windows got everything single wireless adaptor driver, it is not going to work.

Windows ten don't support my wireless adaptor, not that I use it now. Apple is different as they build their machines and they know the adaptors they use.

There are actually a few unofficial YouTube apps that are far better than the official YT app I have on my Android phone. The unofficial apps block ads for one, and let you properly download and save any video. The official app lets you "save" a video but you cannot play it without a network connection. Want to watch a video on a plane or out in the wilderness? Tough.

You can't say that until the final version is released.
