More specific stuff on the current state of what I mentioned.
http://www.theguardian.com/technolog...fault-settings

I'm unsure of them using your PC for software distribution on a peer to peer basis though. I thought it was an optional beta setting

I have no problems with all this. It is just that people are abandoning the paid for freedoms of W7 without being fully aware of the long term implications.

The Microsoft data gathering settings can be changed but they are hidden away inside 13 screens, Also if you select optional settings when Windows 10 starts up for the first time. You can turn the Microsoft data gathering off.

There are two settings for this torrent like sharing of updates. One is IIRC sharing on the same network and the other is globally. I don't remember now, but I think it is set to your network only by default. Which is kind of good, isn't it, saves your bandwidth if you have more computers to update.

In my opinion, there is hardly any difference between windows 8.1 and 10.

Windows 7 is probably just as good, hardly any difference at all between the 3

aye, much of it seems like just a re-skin with a few things still under development like the currently feature poor edge browser ... more features/updates coming soon though

I think their original deadline was October as usually, but this year they decided to try and profit from the back to school wave. And they will deliver complete features by October.

You can opt in to be a insider if you want to test out new features before everyone else.

Can anybody comment. I installed Win 10 on Thursday last all went ok and once installed the system worked fine.

I used my pc for about two hours on Friday and once again all worked well. Been away for the weekend just arrived back and switched on to find that the start button is not working. If you right click on the mouse you can select all sorts but to click on the start button and nothing.

Any advice/guidance would be sincerely appreciated

I had something similar with my older HP laptop. I left it on overnight and in the morning nothing worked. It could not even open a task manager. I had a lot of white rectangles on my desktop, apparently shortcuts in some funny state. I had to take out the battery and unplug the power, because each time I tried it came back into the same funny state. Well, at least something works right I rolled back to 8.1 as 10 seemed to be taxing for that laptop anyway. BTW 3 hours to migrate to 10.

Except that visually Win10 looks worse than 7 or 8.1

Did you have a third party start app on windows 8. If so try uninstalling it from control panel. I had a similar (not quite same) issue on one pc.

I agree with this. Win 10 looks awful compared with win 7 or win 8.1.
It looks very much like an unfinished operating system with lots of work still to be done.

I can see it now. Good old Windows 8, with a lovely Start screen and big Duplo UI

Use Classic Shell Free till it's fixed, or someone posts a definitive fix here.

It was flaky for some in the Preview builds but there were too many possible solutions.

Defender is turned of on my windows 10 for it says I have another programme that dose much the same thing. I did use defender on windows 8 as well as my anti-virus/ firewall programme. Now it don't let me use defender for I have another anti-virus/firewall programme.
So far windows 10 seems to work mostly fine on my laptop. It's just getting used to finding my way around.

How come I haven't been asked to install yet. Anyone else still waiting? I got an email but it basically just said "It'll be ready when it's ready.."

Edit: Just read back a couple of pages and see there's a way to install through the website. Impatient as always!

Installed my Windows 10 upgrade via the media creation tool last night and everything went smoothly.

Using that same creation tool now to download Windows 10 again, but this time creating an ISO Image to burn disc as my own back up DVD.

You never know when this might come in handy as it's only free for the year! I assume my current valid windows activation key would cover any future re-install.

You dont really need to download iso again after a successful upgrade as you can create a recovery usb from the new installation (basically it deletes all non OS files and creates a new registry - quite fast as well, and no activation issues).

However it is not a bad idea to have a full iso as another option plus full system image backup etc (here paranoia is a healthy state of mind ).

I wasn't aware of that fact, nice to know though. I have already burn't to disc now, nice to be able to do a clean install from disc if needs be I feel.

Thanks for the schooling oilman
