As soon as I saw 'Use Express Settings' my antennae twitched.

I locked it down via Custom Install and later through every Privacy setting I could find.

I still daresay there is hidden access in the backgound.

"Allow MS access to my Contacts and Calendar"?

Cheek.

The privacy watchdog now gets involved with the Mail one of the first to actually report it, yet again.

How else is (for example) Cortana going to schedule things for you or send emails to your contacts?

Apple does the same thing with Siri on iOS, and do people moan about privacy?

Neh, who you think gave MS the nod to go in that direction? Why waste your own budget when MS will do all the work for you and all you need is a tame judge and whammo as much data as you can slurp for next to nothing.

It was something that was there in 8.1 also......
To remove the input indicator from the taskbar....
Settings - System - Notifications & Actions - Turn system Icons on or off - Input indicator - Set to Off...
Lots of other choices in there..

Hope that helps.
Hi, I have followed this information but after a restart the icon returns?

Modern UI apps or whatever they call them atm must declare in their manifest what they want to use. If they try to use a certain API without stating it so in the manifest the call will fail. If it's manifested, a user will be asked to give a permission. Also the author of the app must include their privacy policy where they have to publish if and what they are doing with any data they get to use. One can fake that of course, but usually not for long. One just has to use serious companies/ authors. So this is actually a move towards a better transparency, one should be rather worried about the 'big' applications where such restrictions and control mostly do not exist.

Oh dear, read his message
site update - 4 august

this guy knows his onions talking about windows

http://www.tweakguides.com/
its a shame he doesn't elaborate more on the reasons, all I really got from that was he doesn't like it because its hard to change the default programs.

I could provide plenty more examples of annoying or counter-productive feature and UI changes
I wish he would!!

Apropos harvesting data, there's an app for iOS that helps users with their online purchases and looks for cheapest offers of a particular product. The user must give access to their emails. Which then the app, besides doing what it promised to, scans and analyses online purchase receipts and reports to the HQ. They have tens of millions of installations and use the data to estimate how many pieces of a particular product were sold. They estimated among other things that purchases of Apple Watch are on the decline.

Tried edge last night but awful to use, it just kept freezing up for a few seconds. This needs some fixes applying.

Edge is so slow and clunky for me. Firefox is better but still not as fast and slick as it was with win 8.1. Same goes for IE now with win 10.

If Edge doesn't sort itself out soon, I will revert back to win 8.1 for this reason alone.

Default Apps/Desktop Applications for Win 10, or indeed Win 8.1 which seems to be only marginally different.

I blocked evil Google ad servers in hosts file since there is no other way yet and now Edge works nicely and rather fast, too.

How else is personal assistant Cortana going to work. That's like hiring a PA for your office and being shocked she can read your diary and contacts. On todays main page Mail Online has an article saying "OMG! Evil Microsoft are reading your emails!" while further down the same page is an article headline "Cool new Siri feature! She can read your emails to you!".

You would stop using W10 because of Edge, even though you can install any browser you want? Not very logical...

I've been using Edge solidly for the past 2 days and it's fine on 90% of sites.

Yes, you can.

Start > Settings > Personalisation > Colours
Turn off 'Automatically pick an accent colour from my background'
Turn on 'Show colour on taskbar, Start menu and Action Center'
Click on a tile of your preferred colour in the colour palette
You can also get to settings via the Notifications icon in the notifications area.

I was rather amused by the following article....

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencete...ow-repeat.html

.... but it begs the question, will W10 find pictures in other folders such as My Documents? Not that I've got anything like that poor bloke, of course!

You have obviously not read my post correctly.

I did say that IE and Firefox is the same. Slow and clunky.
Edge is the worst of the three.

It does sound a bit like a made up story, but could possibly be true.
