I started the download off, but then realised halfway through that I'd prefer to wait Until I've seen enough comments about how stable it is. If I like what I read, then I'll update.

All I want is pure and simple internet without the whistles and bells, I don't want to connect anywhere with the likes of Skype etc or much worse having my information monitored by my Microsoft account when logged in to start the damn thing. I would rather stay logged out of everywhere, thanks!

P.S. I also have a Windows phone and I have the same thoughts with it.

All I want is a simple life, that's all. Why make life complicated

Not understanding why you are making your life so complicated. It's just an operating system. You simply log in with a local account if you are that paranoid. Nothing complicated there.
Relax and enjoy the simple life.

My wife's win7 laptop has just said it's ready to update to Win10. So she pressed the 'go' button and all we get is 'working on it'. Been like this for about 30 minutes now. We didn't get this on either of our other PC's, which were Win8.1. Does this mean it is actually downloading or is it stuck?

Didn't think I was? I don't feel the need to connect constantly either! Anyway, I'll take your advice and to relax and enjoy my simple life.

I actually love it so far. After a few tweaks and personalisation it's a lot better than 8.1

If the hard disk light is flashing, it's doing something. Give it another hour, and then restart the PC after keeping your finger on the power button for 5-10 seconds.

My old (but barely used) laptop (Pentium P6200!) took about 40-60 mins to upgrade but it had very little on it, I'm doing a 'reset' now which seems to be taking an age, it's been stuck on 99% for about 45 mins, the hard drive light is flashing like crazy so I assume it's doing something!

It can take time and have spells where it doesn't appear to be doing much. Just be patient and let it do it's thing. On my old laptop I used as a guinea pig it took 3 hours just to download files due to a slow Wi-Fi connections. Then another 3 hours to complete the actual upgrade.

My move from 8.1 to 10 took about 1.5 hours.
I was notified of a Windows update yesterday & that took about 10 mins. to complete & restart laptop.

So I noticed this morning a nice new fortress icon for Windows Defender telling me I'm protected in the notification area on my desktop but not on my laptop even though I checked that the latter is fully up-to-date.

Do updates come at different times for different machines?

You shouldn't be seeing Defender at all if you have your own anti-virus.

My Win 8.1 laptop took a couple of hours, but it said things like 'downloading', 'preparing to install' etc. This laptop is just stuck on 'working on it'. This hasn't changed in over two hours. I think there's a problem somewhere.

FINALLY! We gave up and cancelled it. Then we re-started it and it immediatley started doing it properly. It's on the 'upgrading' bit now.

Not quite. If your existing anti-virus version isn't compatible with Windows 10 you will also see Defender active. It leaves your own AV in place but inactive in these cases.

So check your AV website to see what is says about Windows 10 compatibility. Kaspersky Internet Security 2015 requires the patched version. I downloaded the 2016 version instead from the U.S. website on advice of the Kaspersky forum.

Upgraded from Windows 7 last night. Few teething problems. Is OneNote the replacement program for Notepad? Have documents on Notepad which crash soon after opening now, very annoying. I think Windows should have a separate OS for tablet/ touchscreens PCs and 'keyboard' laptops/desktops, half the things on Win 10 like apps etc just not applicable to my laptop! Trying to have a one size fits all is too messy.

No it is not the replacement. Microsoft are planning a new version of Notepad to be made available through the app store.
