They should try this first when unable to find something, it's generally better than venting on a forum....”

But I have my mouse surgically attached to my right hand and only pick up the keyboard when typing on forums.

So moving the mouse and right clicking is by far the easier.

Remember to right-click Start Button for Control Panel

Also enable its Desktop Icon
And Pin to Start and Taskbar and Create a Shortcut and drag to a re-enabled Quick Launch.
Or Press Win key & R and type Control

Now don't do it again!

I don't bother with Control Panel. If i need Mouse settings for example, I just type 'mouse'.

Flipping stupid, and more infuriating because I well know they simply want you trained in 'Bing' as the norm for everything.

Funnily enough, typing gives a sort of DOS box feel !”

Of course, it's the only business that steers you towards their product....Naughty them.

That's why you have more than one choice to get to where you want. It's not just about one individual....

Switched on my laptop to see the "critical error: start menu and cortana aren't working" pop-up. Managed to get around it by going into the msconfig and restoring back to yesterday, on reloading it said the restore had failed, but the start menu is back in business again and the warning notification gone.

After updating my Windows 7 laptop to 10, my laptop was became so slow it was unusable. Rolled back to W7 and made a clean install using USB. My laptop is now as fast as it was with W7 (maybe even faster).

Anyone else with performance issues, I would strongly recommend a clean install, removing everything and starting from fresh.

Another easy option for control panel is to go to start - all apps - windows accessories, click on down arrow for sub list, and then right click on control panel icon, and pin it to start menu.

Worth trying a RESET to factory conditions first before you rollback an reinstall - much quicker, and remembers all OS updates so you don't have to re-download them.

Exactly. So, do an upgrade to obtain your W10 licence activation, then do a W10 Recovery/Reset to effectively do a clean install.

Or click on the Notification Icon next to your system clock, then on All Settings and while it's not the Control Panel, you'll see many of the same settings represented.

I've just discovered a very cool registry hack to activate a dark theme for Settings etc. Not sure why this isn't in the UI.

Settings & calculator look better in dark theme.

The thing with Windows 10 is that you lose Windows media centre, the Windows media centre works well for me especially for TV recordings from my TV card as I can save and publish to DVD, this is why I am sticking to Windows 7, personally I don't see a problem with this platform as it's new to me this year as previously I had stuck with Vista for 10 years previously.

There was no real demand for the media centre version so they decided to can it and you can find better stuff out there so i hear so i don't think MS are losing much sleep over it

They have recently released an App to the store DVD player......HERE
If you already had a media player version of Windows then it's free, otherwise it's around £12.
Only plays DVD's at the moment though so best you stick with 7 if the MC is essential to you.
VLC would make a better choice, either way on W10.

Media Center is actually very good, I will be leaving my 'HTPC' on Windows 7 right up until MS stop providing TV Guide updates. It runs 2 Freeview HD tuners and a freesat HD tuner as a PVR and a Blu-Ray player.

Windows 10 will probably insist on re-installing the faulty driver next time it checks.

Setting yourself as Metered or using the Hide Updates Tool can prevent this.

I reverted back to 8.1 it works fine there no updated drivers for 10

Some of it works ok but if I click on for instance "What's new" the results page has the message "unfortunately we can't open that at the moment , Try again in a few minutes " is there a fix for this , a restart doesn't help .

Well the Windows 7 default one wasnt pretty, but at least you could change it.

What the bloody hell is Microsoft up to? You could change these settings in Windows 98, ffs. And of course almost every version of Linux can be customised in this way.

You've already been told about the Creation Tool and said you didn't want to bother.

It's not difficult. Read back.

Is there no free programme out there that will run Sat cards? They have been around long enough for someone to have written something, one would have thought. I use DVBViewer which is just a one off small cost and does a full freesat TV EPG.

with that i keep hearing about doing a clean install vs not, and maybe needing some sort of key? and i don't know what any of this means. i just need so simple step by step instructions for it if i'm going to attempt it because i really don't want to mess up my laptop.
