There are actually a few unofficial YouTube apps that are far better than the official YT app I have on my Android phone. The unofficial apps block ads for one, and let you properly download and save any video. The official app lets you "save" a video but you cannot play it without a network connection. Want to watch a video on a plane or out in the wilderness? Tough.
a) We're talking about PCs (desktops and laptops) not phones

b) We're talking about official Firefox and official Youtube apps which can only be put on the store by Mozilla and Google respectively. Not unofficial apps which already exist.

I'm not talking about phones either.
I'm talking about Metro apps on W8 and comparing them to Android apps on my phone.

And someone said there should be more apps and you replied that YouTube works fine on the browser. You don't consider recommending a third party YouTube app to be relevant to the discussion? Even though it can download and save videos and remove adverts?

No I don't because they already exist in the store and the comment was clearly about putting things into the store i.e. things that are not there right now.

You really think that when someone says "What the Microsoft store needs is people making apps for it, Also things like Firefox and YouTube could really do with being on it too" that pointing out that there are in fact apps already in the Store that do a great job, and are in fact better than the official apps on other devices, that that is off topic?

You replied that both can use the website. How is that "on topic" of new apps in the app store?

The problem with that is some people use wireless and unless Windows got everything single wireless adaptor driver, it is not going to work.

Windows ten don't support my wireless adaptor, not that I use it now. Apple is different as they build their machines and they know the adaptors they use.
For many old laptops the wireless adapter cannot support modern speeds or security protocols such as WPA2. Windows 10 will work but any interaction with the internet is going to be dire.

I have not had a look at the store for months, so I have no idea what is there now.

I have a old acer laptop, got to be over 6 years old, that will support WPa2, but it will not support the higher speeds, in fact it is pretty slow over wi-fi. I did stick windows 10 on it for a laugh and while it installed, it did not reconise the Wi-fi. Saying that Mint don't either.

I'm getting tempted now, due to the claim that downloading the preview and signing up to the developer program will get you it for free - full and legal.

Only if you are updating from windows 8.1 and windows 7. the Insider preview, while you may still get to use windows 10, you have to be signed up tot he insider preview permanently, which means that you will get new versions of Windows 10, but it could be full of bugs and you also got to have a MS account and your computer connected to it.

The other thing is, MS could pull that right from under your nose without any notification.
If you want Windows 10, then maybe it is best to get a cheap OEM version of Windows 7 or 8.1 if you can and then update from that.
I also think that mixed messages are coming from Ms and no one is sure what the hell is happening.

Thanks. Sounds slightly less tempting now

I don't know it it has been mentioned anywhere in this long thread, but I have just noticed a comment from a user of the BT Forum to warn that the W10 upgrade will involve a download of about 3GB which will be quite a sizable chunk of a month's allocation for anyone on a usage limit.

Big downloads like OS updates or installing the latest and best games from Steam are always going to be an issue with monthly usage caps. Even the free upgrade from W8 to W8.1 would have been around 3GB.

Oh yes, perfectly true. I only passed it on because of the number of strange ideas I have seen over the years about what does, and does not, form part of a usage limit.

People still have usage limits?!

It's 2015 - I have unlimited 73gb fibre and regularly download more than 3GB a day!

You're lucky then - vast areas of the UK have very poor coverage, and unlimited bandwidth may not be an option at all (as in my case).

re: W10 and 3GB - I had this conversation with my neighbour

me - 'are you getting Windows 10 ?'
him - 'can't - not enough memory'
me - 'don't talk rubbish - I helped you build it, you've got 2GB'
him - 'that's it - it says 3GB, and I've only got 2'

sometimes I wonder why I bother . . .

If you built it, you must mean a desktop? You built a desktop with 2GB RAM??? must be a Vista era desktop at the latest possibly XP era?

I think you're overstating the issue a bit there, quality broadband is available to a significant and ever growing number of UK residents.

Unlimited data transfer is an option for anyone who can get any form of ADSL service. BT offers unlimited packages now. Zen also offer them for people who want something more upmarket

But if I remember correctly some don't have caps on downloads during the early hours of the morning.

BT charges a whopping £2.50/month difference between their 10GB plan and their unlimited one.

They should just kill those capped plans completely IMHO - Especially only 10GB !

I looked for my Sister at Christmas and I think it was £7 difference with BT for existing customers then.

The Plans change all the time. You have to consider all the details carefully too. eg you might get better Internet but lose Anytime Calls and only get Evenings and Weekends or whatever
Also you get locked into another 12 or 18 month notice period if you upgrade I think

The current plans don't look bad at the moment on a quick superficial look
