I'm guessing that some of these updates will be named. For example, the idea is that there are going to be feature updates roughly every 4 months which Pro users can defer if they are on Current Branch For Business. But "stability" and security fixes will just be a continuous stream for everyone.

For Windows 10 Home, yes that is correct. Windows 10 Pro still has those options, although the full picture is a little different this time.

Microsoft's Windows 10 got off to a roaring start in its first few days, with its initial usage share handily trumping that of the firm's last free upgrade, Windows 8.1, data from a Web analytics vendor showed...By the end of Saturday, Aug. 1, Windows 10's global usage share had climbed to 2.5%.

I would not be at all surprised if Windows 10 overtakes the usage figures of Windows Vista and the un-updated Windows 8 operating systems when August's netmarketshare.com statistics are released.

A little outlook into my forray into Windows 10 (I'm not a super user, but I'm not incompetent either - I dread to think how computer novices are coping)

I took the plunge from Windows 7 to 10 on my 4 year old Toshiba laptop, against my own better judgement.

Only did it because the Windows 10 upgrade had seemingly taken over Windows Update and wouldn't let me stop it!

Immediately on upgrading, I received multiple messages with the now rather irritating

" something wen't wrong." (How unprofessional that is too!!!).

Laptop constantly crashed and rebooted. Programs and drivers were responding irrationally. Updates seemingly failed. And more importantly - the auto update kept overwriting my WLAN drivers with known faulty ones that Windows Update constantly tried to install on Windows 7.

So I took the decision to rollback. Oh no! Whole laptop completely locked out at the Windows 7 log in screen. Obviously the rollback corrupted my the keyb oard and touchpad drivers. But they were corrupted in safe mode too. And also when disabling advance driver authorisation(?).

Even worse - the recovery partition was overwritten with Windows 10 recovery - not Windows 7 - so I couldn't do any form of Windows 7 repair.

Had to go through the ball ache of going back to a much earlier image I still thankfully had and am now having to update it all.

At least I backed all my critical documents up first.

As soon as my Windows 7 laptop is fully updated again, I'll be uninstalling the Windows 10 notifiction as soon as I see it.

I won't touch Windows 10 now until I get a new device. All in all. F**king nightmare.

Sorry to hear of your problems 196. You may be comforted to know that even Advanced Users get caught out due to lack of Prep or resources, or can't be arsed, too.

The old saying is that "Data doesn't exist unless it is in at least 3 places"

New computer and (budgeted for) external drive):

Make a set of Recovery DVDs or Recovery Drive, then make another copy of them.
Make a System Image, then another System Image (perhaps by a different Utility)

Test your backups can be booted and recognised (but Quit before restoring)

Make regular further System Images. Possibly over two external drives.

Make another and leave it with friend or family member.

Only by these methods, Grasshopper, will you attain Backup Nirvana

And it takes a while of boring crap and mind-think.


Your Recovery Partition is lost? Make another copy of it to another drive too, when computer is new.

And it's all no good unless you label it correctly and store it properly.
If your Emegency Drawer looks like Steptoes' Yard, it's no good and will be maybe junked when you move house or due to an OCD person clearing it.

First of all calm down! You'll get precisely nowhere with a combative attitude, which is exactly what I was saying in the post you quoted. Challenging me to fix your problems, followed by telling me it is impossible, makes you sound like a whiner. Sure, Windows 10 is not Windows 98-through-8.1 and it never will be. Trying to make it so will only lead to disappointment.

In answer to your query, have you tried 'Display' settings? (Tap the Start key and type "display".) There you can change the font sizes of title bars, menus, icons, etc. If that doesn't solve your problem then post back here telling us why exactly and someone will try to help you. Your angry rants about what constitutes an upgrade are unnecessary. Suffice to say that there are a great deal of good reasons why the people at Microsoft choose to do things the way they do, and it isn't because they want to make your life more difficult.

As for all the 'nags' you keep posting about, again, stop looking for problems and start looking for solutions. As with any version of Windows there are file associations. If you open a jpg for the first time, say, and there's more than one program you could use, you can choose to 'Always use' the program of your choice. Nobody is nagging you or trying to make you pay for something you think you already paid for. You are simply being presented with the appropriate options, giving you control over your computer, and nothing more.

My apologies for patronising you somewhat. I sincerely hope some of this helps.

Hey, its ok, I really dont mind.
The major problem I think I had was caused by the upgrade insisting on installing before I had any time to prep for it.
Having said that, I am aware of the ability to change sizes, you can even make the fonts bold, but in my case after restart the settings werent saved and went back to default, frustrating because it took quite some time to even discover where the controls were, especially as I was looking for something that had been essentially removed.

I know that there will probably be things like registry hacks to do what I want, but I simply dont want to go sodding about in the registry as I simply dont have time to discover what works and what doesnt, reinstall backups and so on, and Windows 10 is so new that most of the tech geeks online havent really had time to discover what can be done and blog about it. This is my main pc, my accounts are on it, and even though everything is backed up I just cant afford the time to muck about doing a clean install.

Dont get me wrong, I do appreciate the help that comes through these pages. I dont really like it when I get accused of being a novice or lying, but hey-ho such is life.

The best advice I can give you at the moment is to tackle your problems one at a time. If you want to do something specific and you are struggling then ask for help with that. I thought you had difficulty reading but didn't want to use the accessibility options. Now you say the problem is with default settings being reinstated on rebooting. You do understand that those are two different issues, right?

..As for things being difficult to find, try tapping the Start key and type something relevant. Typing "font" would have got you to the same options screen (after following the link on the left that says 'Change font size'). Easy peasy.

That's one reason I won't be in any hurry to get converted to windows 10. My experience with auto updates is that sooner or later Microsoft will give out an update that will screw up your computer as has recently happened to me on windows 8 and also happened with xp. .

Bad updates are fine with users that are computer experts and can probably sort it out but for the ordinary user its a nightmare that may not be resolved without paying for an expert to fix it.

I can for see Microsoft will have major complaints. Windows 10 I bet any money will become more hated than windows 8.

If there was still the option of choosing which updates to install manually at a time that suits you, how do you suppose these ordinary, non-expert users would discern the best course of action? Surely it makes things simpler if you just let nature take its course, and any issues that inevitably arise will also be fixed automagically. Isn't that what all users want?

78 yrs old/young, I don't understand computer jargon and abbreviations. Down Loaded W10 yesterday, Can hardly find anything that I used ,such as My Favourites. I did find this site after a struggle and made to sign in. My log in details were rejected about 4 times but finally accepted and I don't think I altered anything to get accepted.

Whilst in the past, updates the impact on the experience potentially drive new hardware sales, more than likely future updates will be about increasing advertising revenue.
Therefore, apart from an increase in built in adware, other negative impacts will be kept to a minimum.

How much people will hate the 'improved' ads is open to debate.

The main reason why I never allow auto updates, I wait for a couple of weeks and if I hear nothing bad I will then update and cross fingers.

This system on Windows 10 to force updates is not for me, i can understand why MS wants to do this, but I do not want my computer going belly up because of a faulty update.

So where are these adverts? I used windows 10 and saw none, or are they only on window apps? I hate that word apps.

No one i know uses IE, most use chrome, some uses Firefox, I can not see them changing to edge, so no adverts there.

I have had a few texts or messages from people asking how they change back to chrome/firefox as their default browser.

my problem with the automatic updates was that it could tie up the laptop for an hour or more at a time when I was trying to get my work done....

by setting it to download and then leave it up to me when to install I could install in the evening when it didn't matter if my laptop was tied up

now I'm wondering if I'll have any option over when these updates occur

it wasn't so much the downloading updates which just happened in the background.......it was always that business of the screen going blue and 'configuring windows updates' which put the laptop out of use

I have rolled back to windows 7 too......went over to windows 10...made sure I upgraded drivers etc.....the trouble is windows 10 randomly froze my system every 5-20mins and made things unworkable.....my system literally just froze and I had to do a reboot of the whole system......went back to windows 7 which only too about 20mins and its been fine since....I certainly wont be downloading windows 10 again until at least another 6 months.
