Bad updates are fine with users that are computer experts and can probably sort it out but for the ordinary user its a nightmare that may not be resolved without paying for an expert to fix it.

I can for see Microsoft will have major complaints. Windows 10 I bet any money will become more hated than windows 8.”

You could be right & where will that leave Microsoft???

Do you not have a Pro version then, makes it a little easier?
Most users on home I'm sure would just be better off having MS decide what updates to have and to keep them updated/protected.
But do some research and have a read of this article, it lays out some good scenarios if you want to delay or handhold/select any updates.

One interesting thing is the sms and mms in the settings that cortana seems to want access to, turn it to off and it disables 'hey cortana'.
Can understand for phone, but for a PC, is there any need for that to really be there or is it and all tied in with the phone continuum.
I really think it should be off on a pc if you want, but also use hey cortana, odd.

Never got involved with Win8 so when did the Win7 'Switch User' disappear? It's not there in Win10

Click on your account pic at the top to the start menu, to see other accounts and switch etc.

Only problem I've noticed with my laptop on W10 is that the audio is really quiet, even at 100%.

Also, if you want - Enable Administrator and Guest

(a spare Admin login is useful in case of future corruption)

I never found a solution to this. Mine varied unacceptably between Preview builds.

It's OK with the RTM. Ask on the MS Forums if no-one else can suggest anything here.

You could try original drivers from your manufacturers download support page

Sorted it, now it's twice as loud

Downloaded this:
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds029024

Installed, restarted, the install appeared again then it said it errored, however the sound is much, much better now.

Well done. So it is 'just' a non optimized driver, we must presume.

The best advice I can give you at the moment is to tackle your problems one at a time. If you want to do something specific and you are struggling then ask for help with that. Don't conflate the issue by throwing in other things that niggle you, or claim that you simply don't have time to fix things. You are either bothered or you're not bothered. Make your bloody mind up! I thought you had difficulty reading but didn't want to use the accessibility options. Now you say the problem is with default settings being reinstated on rebooting. You do understand that those are two different issues, right?”

I posted you could not change FONTS, which you cannot, but you can do in all previous versions of Windows, or certainly since Windows 98, and I also explained why it was important to me. Also you cannot get round that by creating a theme using different fonts, something which I did on a tablet I had but which has been taken out.

Theres no point having a rant at me if what I specifically asked was not solved by the solution you gave. You cannot change fonts in Icons, Pallette Titles, Menu Bars, Dialog Boxes, Title Bars or Menus, which I would like to do.

Thanks for that, i forgot about using Group Policy, i did use it when I was trying Windows 10 out, but I thought that option had been taken out. Metered connection will not work on my PC as it is not on Wi-fi.

I will give it go if I decide to update to 10 at some point.,

As for allowing MS to decide, surly it is up to us to decide? it is our computers after all and to be honest, I am getting fed up of trying to sort out pother peoples computers that have failed because Ms muck up the updates.,

When will people get it into their heads far more pc problems occur because they do NOT download updates!

I changed my Group Policy a couple of weeks ago.

It filters some updates (50/50). Gives the option to download. But other similar updates, it doesn't.

I haven't worked out a pattern.

You could try the Hide Updates Tool http://www.zdnet.com/article/microso...ws-10-updates/

I used to use this little program on win8. Don't know if it works on win10, worth a try though.

I haven't got time to read through the whole thread, but has anyone overcome the dumb changing all folders to read-only issue?
I've tried a couple of workrounds posted on the net but wondering if anyone has a foolproof solution?

What exactly are the symptoms? Your problem might not be the same as everyone else's.

I can understand downloading security updates, but a lot of the updates are not security, some are drivers that makes things worse. a few times even in Windows 8, MS tries to update my audio drivers and muck things up.

Windows 10 will be having new features soon, maybe I do not want those new features, like the integration of Skype for instance.

I also know of someone who have a XP machine and it have never been updated from new and not one problem have they had with that machine and you are looking at a 7 year old machine at least. Granted it is not and have never been on the net.

You must have registered at some point for it to download Windows 10. How did you know it was downloading? I thought that happened in the background

Thanks for that, looks like just what I need, I will give it a try when I get Windows 10 back, I'm back on 7 for a while now but I do have a netbook that is registered to take the update which isnt too important for me so I will try it on that.

The link has been saved.

Not convinced by "Windows 8 Font Changer" after 10 mins messing with it (in W10)

I think it needs quite a bit of experimentation, and it requires log-off/on for changes.

But it seems safe, just remember what your original fonts were or Create a Restore Point first.

2 Stars from me. Maybe worth the effort for those who have difficulty seeing default fonts.
