I think it needs quite a bit of experimentation, and it requires log-off/on for changes.

But it seems safe, just remember what your original fonts were or Create a Restore Point first.

2 Stars from me. Maybe worth the effort for those who have difficulty seeing default fonts.”

Thanks for the guide, I appreciate you doing that.

Nae probs. I want these changes too.

Just tested System Restore. It took 10 mins door to door. (acceptable)

Some Preview Builds took 45 mins and also required an annoying secondary confirmation

I have a small gripe with windows 10.

Right click Volume Tray Icon
Also search Windows for Volume and separately for Sound and Audio.
(Control Panel, Settings and Windows Explorer.)

There are 3 places to get access to slightly different options, I think.

Including Equaliser. I've never had definitive success.

Make shortcuts to what you find.

Do you have any virus protection running or real time monitoring running at the time. Not sure about that code, but it took me a couple of attempts before it worked after uninstalling Kaspersky and the always running in the background tune up software.

Use Revo Uninstaller to get rid of Tune-up Utilities. They are the spawn of the Devil and you don't need them.

Ccleaner and ADW Cleaner and Malwarebytes and Windows Firewall are fine.

Don't worry, I haven't bothered to re-install Tune-up Utilities.

Are you using the Media Creation Tool or what?

Yes. Norton. But tried it with that disabled.... Still same issue. Not media tool yet...not confident enough to do that myself.

OK, I'm going to say it one last time. The Media Creation Tool method is a lot easier than what you are trying to do now.

I would second that. Download it from MS website or at least just Google Windows 10 Media Creation Tool and download it - about 19MB.

If you really want to do it. we will help with instructions (as I now see mentioned above)

But it will take a bit of Prep and not getting the hump at how useless computers can be.

It helps if you can continue working, and getting online, via another computer. Do you have a spare?

Do you have a License Key for Norton and (possibly) completely uninstalling/reinstalling it?

Are you W7 SP1 or W8.1?

Do you have an external hard drive?

I see Edge and 10 are getting near the exact same set of security holes as 8.

Let's face it, 10 and Edge could be 8.2 and IE 12.
The ' its a new OS honest gov ' freebie is simply a wzy to impose the massively draconian regime. Calling it 8.2 would have been as big a PR disaster as 8.

I used this when I was on W8. Worked like a charm. Wasn't aware it works also on W10. Must have a play with it later on and get things back to the way I like them!

Everything is worth a punt.

And if, an old site/download reports suitable for XP/Vista it doesn't mean it won't work with W7/8/8.1/W10

(might have to change Properties/Compatibility)

I did media tool upgrade with Norton in place and it worked fine.

It really is worth buying an external hard drive for backing things up. You will never regret it.

I have to disagree with this as i had to take my pc to a shop after installing windows updates as i couldn't even boot into anything!

Although im the kind of person who always updates even the optional one's, I can understand why people are nervous of them.

A single household, single computer, no backup drive is risky for normal life as well as upgrade.

I recommend do nothing, just now.

Get a scrap (working) spare computer from Freecycle or eBay if funds are difficult.

Even if we help you there is still a risk you will be stuck with a non-working computer..

I actually have 4 laptops and 2 PCs, But only 2 x 5 year old laptops work as main machines.

And I only bought the last one (eBay £25) because the others were Win95/98 or in bits, awaiting resurrection. They do all work though)

Not only is a spare computer essential but also a backup drive.

Tablets and phones don't cut the mustard.

And I'm talking paying bills and Social with family, is why you shouldn't be dependent on one device.

And, one day, your main computer won't boot up and you'll need the other to Google, or ask here, and download tools to repair it.

Of course, there are problems from time to time, but your above problem screwed your pc up on install if I interpret you correctly. Unless you never install updates, there was nothing you could have done, as you obviously had not made an image backup before the updates were installed.

Ok, we can't stop updates now, but we can defer them. That gives you enough time at least when any major updates to make a full image backup before the update, which means you will not have to take pc to a repair shop.

Also, it is possible to reverse uninstall updates. So the real issue is not whether we install them or not (easy to back track with backup images in worst case scenarios), but once we have identified an issue with an update, how we stop it recurring again? This has yet to be satisfactorily resolved.

The problem with letting users choose as the old system, is far too many people just did not bother to update, and put their PCs at security risks.

A compromise could be that security updates are mandatory, but all others optional?
Another option is perhaps security updates are optional if you use recognised security packages.

By and large, I think MS have made the right decision, erring on the safe side.

So start making regular system backups - always a good plan.

The real fact here is... I shouldn't have to worry about backing stuff up...full stop.. its 2015 we should not be having to buy extra hard drives and stuff just incase microsoft messes up because i didn't mess up! i do have system images anyway which doesn't help at all when your unable boot at all. But tbh i think its something to do with video drivers and another reason why we need to get microsoft to pay for repairs if they can't handle their own software with hardware. Why don't they just keep it simple.

Shaun.

Unfortunately, on the planet I live on, PCs don't behave like that. They are very complex. It's no exaggeration to say that no two PCs can be guaranteed to behave the same. I have some identical Dell Vostro 230 desktops in my office, and occasionally one of them will do something really odd, despite the fact that they run 90% of the same software.

These are computers. Stuff happens. That's why you need backups. You can't blame Microsoft for everything.
