You want Microsoft to keep it simple? Don't install anything that isn't Microsoft. None of that would happen if users didn't install non-Microsoft programs and hardware manufacturers didn't update their drivers.

That's probably why Apple is so controlling. It won't even let me uninstall Safari when I can with IE on Windows.
You can not uninstall IE, you can hide it, but it is still in the background.
I remember some one saying years ago windows is a good OS, as long as you do not install software on it.

You have got a point about Apple and it is why Apple machine are normally more reliable and I do understand that MS have to produce their OS for different hardware, which must be a nightmare, but Linux seems to do ok and that is without the multi-million dollars that MS have.

Just put in another thread. I love it. I am admittedly am Windows man and always have been since a kid on 3.1 but not even I could defend Windows 8 which was truly awful and trying to explain things to a technophobe was extremely difficult. I even defended Vista, I actually like Vista to. My one gripe is the information centre which repeats things I.E. Outlook brings up my E-mails and then it appears again in my notification area. If all else fails and you need an endorphin hit ( I think some need more than others on here) I recommend Citrus Blossom Shake N' Vac. Put that ****ing freshness back folks.
You got it bad

Windows to me is a tool to allow me to use other tools, but it got to work and got to not annoy me and windows 10 annoy me.

Paul Thurrott has put together a Complete Guide to Windows 10
https://www.thurrott.com/windows/win...-to-windows-10

The firefox section is an interesting read for those that use firefox, especially how to make google or another your cortana and/or windows your default search engine instead of bing.

It's a question of scale - for basic stuff, Linux is perhaps ok, but will never be able to cope with the range of programs that are used by windows.

To call Linux an Operating System is rather misleading. A better term would be Operating System Development Tool or something like that. There are multiple and partially incompatible versions of Linux Operating systems. Very few of the major package developers bother with Linux.

Where Linux is strong is in it's use for custom built apps used in items such as kindles, PVRs etc.

Of course, Apple's approach is different, restricting the hardware range which helps but is expensive, and this is primarily why it will never compete with Windows.

Lot's of people say MS should not have a monopoly. They don't - they just have the biggest market slice. Technology is littered with also rans - betamax, 8 track cartridges, HD alternatives to bluray etc.

Linux is like Android. Everybody and their cat have their own distro, flavour or fork or whatever. Bugfixing that mess is very ineffective, because it requires a lot of effort. They would need to restructure the code to have only one codebase for core functionality and restrict the open source areas where one can do changes freely. Then they would not have to reinvent a wheel in every distribution and they could react quickly with a reasonable amount of effort to problems.

Is there a time-limit for the upgrades? I've done it for my main computer but the laptop I have hasn't had the message to upgrade yet.

It would seem Win10 just can't stop talking to MS http://arstechnica.com/information-t...-to-microsoft/

I'm not sure if this has been covered already but so far my "upgrade" has been "working on it" for 4 hours. Is this usual? Many thanks.

It doesn't really need a expert to upgrade it, You just click upgrade at the notifications area. Then click next on two screen then it upgrades. Not like the old days of trying to find a CD then putting all of your content somewhere else as it gets removed on the format. It so simple that it could actually be done on remote desktop.

If you mean Edge, then there is no ad blocker currently available. If you mean IE11 then Adblock Plus should work.

Actually, it was so slow and there were a few black screens so some novice users might have given up. It only by my reading these forums that I've picked up on giving it lots of time.

In theory (can't say I've tested it), I suppose this is the place to go for that:

https://adblockplus.org/en/internet-explorer

But that won't do a thing in the Edge Browser (remember that's not the same thing as IE version 11, even though they're both installed).

I had adblock plus on IE before the change and notice that it was reinstalled as part of the W10 installation........as were other things like Adobe, Firefox. Norton.....

Looking down the list of Programs quite a lot of them show the install date as the date I changed to W10 or the day after.......so I'm guessing that Windows uninstalls a lot of your programs during the switch and re-installs them afterwards

It also changes some of your defaults.......for example to open pdf files in the Edge browser rather than (in my case) Adobe Reader and of course it makes Edge the default internet browser so you'll have to go and change that if you want IE or one of the others

The only thing I've noticed so far that was uninstalled and not re-installed was that Rapport security which the HSBC bank pesters us to have

I guess the thing to do is look through your programmes and if anything like adblock plus is missing just reinstall it yourself

Well, I've gone back to 8.1 and will leave it for about three months before I upgrade to 10 again because of there being no ad-blocker available for Microsoft's new browser...even though I only mostly only use the ad-blocker on sites where it's hard to navigate. The side bar was also disappearing quite often when these forums had loaded. Anyway, yeah...I'll just wait a few months before getting it again.

Ah! Okay. I thought it was because they do look the same in the quick launch bar, even though the 'e' has Windows 10's own look to it. Oh well...I'll just wait about two or three months for an ad-blocker to be released (hopefully) for the Edge browser.

I had one look at Edge and didn't like it so I just made IE11 my default browser instead of Edge..........the adblocker and all my favourites, stored passwords etc were still there after the update

Could you not have done that ?........and just carried on using IE as before ?

I thought the browser in the quick launch bar was Internet Explorer. It looked like it. Unless Microsoft have hidden it away somewhere and you have to find it.

If you right click the start button ........click on Control Panel, then Programs, then Default Programs......wait for list of programs to load, then click Internet Explorer.......a panel will open with the option to 'make this the default program' - click on that

then all you'd need is a shortcut link on your desktop or pinned to the bottom taskbar.........when you click on that IE will open and not Edge !

It's too late now, I went back to 8.1 earlier on. I can't be bothered to go back to 10 so soon. I'll give it a month or two. Thanks for telling me though.
