That is good to hear but might I please enquire about the fate of the original pre-installed bloatware that usually comes with Sony Vaios? Thanks (a friend of mine has one).
I just disable them all from starting in Task Manager. I might just uninstall them now, as support is finished in effect.

My daughters Sony Vaio cannot update to Windows 10, a VPC-F24
She never had the icon thingy
A techy workmate she works with who supports an F1 team computers tried installing it for her after backing up
It stops after hours of the update
Back now on Windows 7
Looks like Mum will be buying her a new one
Does a lot of work video editing on it
My Dell inspirion updated fine using the icon thingy
I like Windows 10, feels clean, shiny and modern and Cortana is pleasant
Hate edge though so sticking with firefox and mail app looks terrible
Glad I have an iPad for my mail, would not want to be using that

Not sure if anyone has tried to install windows 10 on a sony vaio, but chatting to a friend yesterday, thought this may be interesting.
He recently bought two SVT1121B2EW that came with 8.1 and it did display very large on the box and the argos website 'windows 10 free upgrade', which he presumed would mean an easy upgrade. Oh dear fooled...
His GW10 did not appear, so he got the media and tried to install. It started the install but stalled after a few hours.

He did contact sony support, who he said were just awful and uninterested, just wanted to login to his machine. That just frightened him.

On looking I found a few links that he was not aware of on the sony support website.
http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/os10upgrade.pl?
http://sony-eur-eu-en-web--eur.custh...ail/a_id/81928

They are recommending waiting to install until the drivers & installation instructions are available and showing that as October/November 2015.

Not had much experience of Sony Vaio, first Sony I've come across for a long time.
Not actually seen the machine. But after I spoke with him yesterday, he took decided on a full refund. He told me he is now the owner of two Acer Aspire V15 (VN7591G) and both upgraded last night with no issues.

Wondered if anyone else had any thoughts or perhaps were not aware of this from Sony.
Sony sold Vaio a while ago....maybe a year ago. My impression since then has been that the support left in place has been "token". Telling us that we should not update until October/November when drivers may be available is a bit of a cheek, but not as cheeky as telling us that not all W7/W8 Vaio models will be supported.

I did a fresh install of W10 on my Vaio Windows 8.1 Laptop and it went just as expected. No problems at all except for the Keyboard backlight which is in the "middle position" in W10. (It comes on when any key is pressed and then fades after a few seconds). This is annoying but is probably unfixable unless Sony produce a Vaio Control Center for each model. I have sat through thousands of words in which really clever people have pondered ways to take control of the backlight........and have then eventually admitted defeat.
In fact it would probably be quicker to just remove the keyboard and then unplug the cable.....

Bing has a far larger audience in the U.S. whereas Europe is predominantly Google.
Bing's ONLY audience in the US is with people who have a default changed by Microsoft and don't know how to change it back. There are no dedicated Bing users anywhere.

If you think Bing has a bigger US audience simply because MS is headquartered in the US, you are forgetting that Google is headquartered in the US as well.

That's a bit extreme. Apple uses Bing as their default search provider, and Bing Maps. I prefer Google, but I've seen other people happily use Bing.

I'm sure it will and give those EU beaurocrats something to do.
But I think I remember MS saying the search engine options in W10 and edge will be changing soon, they are still not that configurable yet in the edge settings, much like in the preview.
The google addon is called Chrometana, assume it does the same as the inbuilt firefox one.

They should have changed them in the first place, not wait.
As I said, it needs a add on, something that people should not really need to do.

I am also getting fed up of the notice that keeps popping up on my computer to update, it seems like every time I switch the machine on now.
i will have to get rid of that update again and remember not to install it again.

Are you saying Microsoft are bribing EU officials?
Make of it as you want.

I'm back!
I have upgraded my Sony Vaio without any problems. They only say that to avoid being sued etc if somebody updated and it went pearshaped.

Just make that vital recovery usb drive and full system image etc before upgrading.
Glad you got it sorted.

I thought I loved Cortana and really liking the notifications of news and sport, which have been good so far, reminds me of that old beeb ticker in a way.
But, had a notification popup on my w10 desktop that told me the result of the mancityvchelsea match.
Was watching the match on my tablet with sky go, so a little delay there, darn you Cortana!
I'm not sure how to tell her off politely. Expect she will either respond with 'So long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye' or 'Sorry I did'nt get that'.

Not her fault if you have her set to notify you of the scores etc....

Correct, just a bit of coding on a machine.

On the subject of Sony Vaio's, I have an elderly VPCEC3S0E running W7 and that had no difficulties upgrading to W10. The fact that the hardware worked OK did not stop me reverting to W7 after a fairly short time when I found that some of my much-used software wouldn't run (not even in Compatibility Mode) and I also didn't like the new drivers for my Epson printer and V500 scanner. Also, I never got the boot-up to be less than 2mins 35secs when my W7 only takes 43secs. Thank goodness for those people who recommended Macrium.

What is possibly sadder is that I'm in a pub right now but ....

My arm is hurting from all the typing on a touch tablet through the night (insomniac). My doctor says I am suffering from 10-de-night-is.

Yes.

Yet they also have vast differences in what they do and how they operate. It is quite strange that no one really talks about them. It often seems as as if none whatsover get used.

The icons at the right on the taskbar look very basic. They look like something that's in Windows 95/98. They would have looked better if there was a bit of shape/depth to them. The Control Panel is harder to work out than in 8.1. It would have been better if when clicking the folder icon on the quick launch bar, it went to This PC instead of quick access.

A lot is spoken about the Turing Test, but the flaw with it is that it assumes humans will pass it too (I am sure we know all know somebody where that is debatable) !

I like the old HHGTTG classic :

"Men say they are more intelligent than dolphins, as they work and build things, whereas
all dolphins is swim in water and play all day"

"Dolpins say they are more intelligent for the same reasons!"
