I mentioned, 10162 iso failing to install, on another thread, for my Main laptop.

I've now wasted most of today getting it installed as an Update/In-place Upgrade on Laptop2

Clean installled and activated W7 SP1U without problem
Windows Update didn't work. Fixit and Troubleshooter no use. So couldn't install from any Tray Icon
MS W10 Online Upgrade page now only says "Run Update from Tray Icon"
In-place Upgrade from USB Flash fails after the Installer has had a root around for a few minutes. Unknown error/Uninformative message

Copying USB Flash to spare partition on main drive and it magically decides it will do the In-Place Upgrade from there without a murmur of complaint

I hope the majority of the Billion new customers don't get the aggro I have had over a simple job


The Insider Clarification, mentioned earlier, certainly seems to be anything but.

See on the 29th July, the Universal Microsoft official Office apps will be available for Windows 10 in the store and free for PC and mobile.
They will be full touch version and be the same as we have now on Android and iOS phones or tablets. Been using these myself and they are excellent and Im a heavy personal/work user of word/excel/onenote and powerpoint.

So no more need to have the desktop win32 paid 365 version of office or libre office installs.

Had no problem installing the latest build in a few PCs and vmware.

Th1 Professional 10240 (The RTM build) now installing. So Insiders are getting it well in advance.

Only if you got your computer linked to your MS account, I have got 10162 and get a message pop up now and again saying " get insider builds, insider build settings need attention.

I thought service packs were things of the past now.

Will probably upgrade to 10 just before the upgrade deadline runs out - assuming most reviews are favourable. By then the worst of the bugs and security vulnerabilities should have been ironed out.

Not read through all the thread but whats the opinion of those who have installed it?

I'm on 8.1 and reserved a full install but am always hesitant about these upgrades. When i went from 8 to 8.1 i couldn't get one or two applications to open again. Eventually found 8.1 had altered them to run only in XP!!

I reset it and they worked.

Not really.....You have a month to evaluate and revert if you want.

Of course, everyone has different PC settings and content, but, I've had no problems ( so far) on my 5 year old Sony Vaio laptop.
There's no rush to download it, you have up to a year to wait and see if it's panning out generally.

As MS now have a programme of continuous improvement and new features applied through updates. There are always going to be updates to the system and features.
Not really seeing what the problem would be...

W10 could could turn out to be really good, we will see from the reactions once released.

This new approach of Microsoft seems similar to that used in the past by mainframe manufacturers. As I remember ICL released a new version of VME every year and supported the previous release for 12 months to allow user sites time to upgrade. I don't know if IBM did the same.

But their prime OS is IOS.

It never happened on the version before, it was a change that MS did.

i think that is only OEM, so if you have a retail version of Windows 7 or 8, I think you can go back when ever you want.

I thought the forced updates was only going to be with the home version.

They made lots of changes, it was the 'Insider Programme', they can, you agreed.

They are.....My update to 10240 gives me the Pro version and it has the option to 'Defer updates'.
While looking I also found that the final version is still on the Insider programme. You will need to click 'Stop Insider Build' in advanced update options.
It just says 'Thank you for participating in the Insider programme', no sign of it reverting back to anything.

That is consistent with what Microsoft said. Systems enrolled in the insider program will stay in the insider program unless manually stopped.

Also, 10240 doesn't look like it's the 'final' version.

Gabe Alu blogged on Wednesday that 10240 is "...one step closer to what customers will start to receive on 7/29"

Thankfully Windows 10 is not my main OS, so not that bothered., I was just being nosy more than any thing else.



Defer updates, but not have the same settings as Windows 8 and anything before it that allows you to check updates but not download or install them or not check at all. I always like to have control over updates.
It could change with the final version and I thought it was only the home version that would force updates.

I did try and download the ISO version of 10240, but it seems that can't be done now.

Previously when manually stopping the programme it forced you to roll back your Machine, in 10240 it no longer does that, it just puts you on the RTM loop as normal. Obviously that won't stop you receiving finalised updates going forward, should anything change between now and the 29th.
Personally, I am leaving my Laptop on the Insider loop for at least another month just to see what's happening.
