If you activated using a product key, you will have to enter it again when clean installing on the same machine. It will activate unless you changed the motherboard. Your machine only gets a digital entitlement (no need to enter a product key) if you upgraded from eligible system (7 SP1 or 8.1) or if you purchased the key from Windows Store.

If the key is a full retail key, it may be reused on a new mobo.
I gave in and reformatted (Again) The key I bought from ebay worked absolutely fine. Was worried it wouldn't work but no it's fine

entTo all the posters who are having any problems with Win 10, WHY, its a simple job. You have done all this before, many times, you get the all clear from Microsoft and commence to download, it can as I have read all the moans up to 2/3 hours,be patient, I have installed Win 10 on 7 computers without a problem, the Edge Browser IS NOT FINISHED so you should user Firefox or chrome, please do not browse the internet whilst installing, you will only make every thing slower. when it finally installed put your anti virus in a nd use it. There are lots of different things in different places, look around, get familiar with the OS lets face it, it is still a "Beta" **Note the will be NO Service Packs** from now on it is WINDOWS AS A SERVICE - If anyone is expecting Windows 11 there will never be one.Windows 10 has the makings of a Wonderful O/S, in November there is a huge update "Threshhold 2 which is going to be packed with most of the things you are missing now.
We have 2 large destops/4 Latops and 2 tablets, ALL with WINDOWS 10 Pro, they ALL work 100% 20 hours a day. And that happens not by luck, I do consider myself a bit of an expert BUT, I have a lot of patience. Enjoy Windows 10.

Yes, it does look amazing but with a price of $1499 (which is sure to be £1499 in the UK) for the base model and up to $2499 for the 1TB drive then I can't see myself rushing out with my credit card. I'm in the market for a new laptop in the next few months but that's beyond my budget.

The 1tb Surface Book is $2,699. But then do you really need to have all that local storage these days, the 128gb model will give you 93gb after win 10 is installed.
The i7 8gb and 256gb with the NVIDIA GeForce graphics (GPU) is $2099.
The dock is £164.99 (only uk price I have seen so far)
Its a shame the price is so high, for me it did look good, but such a high price tag will be a turn off for many.
Would say though from what I have seen so far, prefer the style of the surface book instead of the original surface, tried that and just never really found it comfortable to use.
The whole MS event to me was a basic narcissism event.
They go to great lengths to make Windows 10 usable on a whole range of devices, then promote expensive devices beyond reach of normal users.
MS want to grow in the mobile phone market and make an OS that is designed for it, then market a high end expensive device. The high ground for phones is well dominated by IOS.
MS should be aiming to take the middle ground dominated by Android. I am sure many people would consider a Windows phone at a reasonable price. People buy android as it is funtional, relatively robust, easy to use, and plenty of free or low price apps.

The idea seems to be to go - at least initially - after the premium market where Apple still dominate - and to try to make Microsoft a "cool" brand for the first time in years.
The target market for the Surface Book is clearly high end professionals and executives who don't care so much about the cost.
Im not 100% sure it is aimed at professionals and executives, but maybe it is aimed more at the executive market where golf and such like happens in the course of the work.
Its total weight including keyboard is 1.5 KG, yet we have plenty of laptops around, both high end ones and consumer ones that hit only 1KG.

Unless they think that if Apple can charge a lot for their products, so can they.
You have to remember the Windows ecosystem still includes many OEMs who will make great products at prices that ordinary people are willing to pay. The Surface brand partly sets a high bar, it takes some mindshare away from Apple and helps make Microsoft's brand cool again. That's partly the reason for such high prices on the Surface brand - they need to give breathing room to their OEM partners. And partly, these are still niche devices so you want to have high margins to pay back the R&D and marketing costs of these things.
The Surface Pro 4 with specs I would want will cos £1,100 but Dell will make something decent for £800 and I'll buy that but I'll be bought into the concept from the Surface.

Yes, I saw the US pricing and their usual price conversion rates are ridiculous. But I'd try to get one above the "entry level" model anyway or if it's too much, the base model will have to do.

Yes, that's the Surface Pro problem. Those type/touch covers don't hold their position, this is solved with the Surface Book. I see some lucky family members getting my Surface 3 Pro and XPS 13 and I will buy myself something nice for Christmas
I think 128GB should be enough for me after all if I can add an SD card as well.

I think MS HW strategy is high end products for consumer market, phones and tablets/laptops like these. For those who like MS designs and can afford them. I've got MS Word and Excel on my Android tablet and I've very impressed with them. Especially for free.
Finally, MS have realised that these days you need to be cross platform. There may be some die-hards who will be totally loyal but most people have a selection of technologies they use for work and at home.
Can anyone advise me here, we recently upgraded our vista laptop to windows 7, runs perfectly, but we have just noticed today we've got a little windows icon in task manager asking us to ''reserve your free copy today''? it even says '' This pc is compatible'' and the report says everything is good, so ive got no reason not to upgrade i guess? my only question is, will going ahead and installing win 10 over win 7sp1 mean that i would lose all my data(if i dont back up) and will i then have to go about searching for drivers manually or is this literally just an update not like a complete wipe/reinstall?
Finally what does it mean by ''reserve your copy today'', does that mean i cant actually install it right now?
Any pointers please experts!?

I don't wish to be rude, but the slightest bit of research, including reading this thread, would answer your questions.
No, you shouldn't lose your data, but you should have a backup anyway, just in case. It's also good to make a full image backup of your PC using the built in backup tool, or another 3rd party favourite; Macrium Reflect.
If your PC had Vista then it's quite old, so it's worth checking that any other hardware you might have, such as printers, work with Windows 10.
it was more for the release event in that the earlier you reserved the quicker you'd get your copy as they staggered it to prevent the servers melting down and accept the t&c's and over the next day or 2 it'll pop down the files needed and will throw up a little box saying its ready.
While its normally pretty good i'd say backup your data before starting (and why don't you have one anyway or is the machine just full of stuff you don't care about like cat's asking for cheeseburgers pics)
just get macrium reflect (the free version) and clone the drive to an external drive and won't take long so probably as you get back with a cuppa it'll be well on its way, disconnect the external drive and pop it somewhere well away and then tell the win 10 installer to get started and if it all goes well a few reboots later and you're on 10 and once it's installed it will store a copy of your hardware config at MS's end so if you ever need to reinstall it'll just auto authenticate so no searching for serial numbers etc

95 pages? forgive me for not reading them all before asking any questions, patience was never my thing
Yeah vista is old, but as i said its now running 7 but i chucked another 2gb of ram in so its doubled to 4gb. runs 7 really fast actually, i should imagine 10 would run ok if 7 does no? but if all else fails and i installed 10 only to find out it runs like a dog, i can downgrade back to 7 i think.

If you have an external hard drive - follow this guide to create a system image backup.

You can revert to Windows 7 from windows 10 within 30 days using the rollback mechanism, but it has been known to fail.
You can reinstall 7 in the usual way, but you would have to install XP and upgrade to 7 again. Using a system image avoids this hassle.
