So MS checking the update to window 10 checkbox on 7/8 updates
is an "accident"!

I think MS are being heavy handed. However, pre-downloading the update is not the same is installing it automatically, which is what some posts are claiming.

I have had it try to install without permission several times, but I am computer savvy enough to stop it.

This is after 'hiding' the update option.

Very annoying.

I am running win 8.1.

I've never seen the upgrade process start by itself. Yes, it downloads the update in the background, and nags you to install, but it doesn't do it without clicking 'go'.

It did in my case at least three times.

Why all the paranoia about not upgrading? I have had Windows 10 for quite some time now on all my systems and have no problem with it. Quite the opposite. When starting up, it spends longer in the BIOS than the actual Windows start up.

Something to do with Microsoft malware style tactics?

It is persuading me to stick with 8.1, Microsoft certainly increasing the forboding on top of what we already know about 10.

Same here, I've got three "Upgrade to Windows 10 Home" updates hidden. Curiously two of them are 2,706.1MB and one is 2,862.6MB in size.

No, let's be clear. We agree that the large 'Windows 10' update downloads, but that's not the same as the installation starting by itself.

And, if that’s the case – could we see another accidental auto-upgrade in the future?"

It did start by itself on my win 8.1 installation.

It happened three times but luckily, I was there to stop it.

Perhaps my post could be misconstrued, I hid the Win10 update three times, it hadn't tried to install itself.

However, now that I think about it, my PC is set to "notify only" when it comes to updates. If it was in fully auto mode, it would have downloaded and kicked off the install of Win10 without any intervention from me.

I'm going to repeat myself just one last time: The Windows 10 installation does not start by itself. Just think about the backlash against Microsoft if that was really what is going on.

Yes, the large update is downloading by itself, even if you have hidden the update in some cases. However, it only installs when you click to agree. The people who say it does it by itself have forgotten they clicked to install at some point in the process, even if it was to 'reserve' the upgrade months ago.

That is my experience, but as was said you can hide the update presumably.

You don't need to be there surely, as it will reach a screen where it needs user intervention and then you cancel/close it.

They snook it in by auto checking it in the optional updates so that it then ran.

One further backlash matters little, but anyway they did actually apologise for this one, and have undone it.

I'm also curious why they are not deleting old W10 downloads, they are unneccesssarily filling peoples hard drives.

That shows much of the timeline of it all. Accidental? Ramping it up to reach managerial targets is most likely.

You are wrong, like others on here I have 3 Win 10 upgrade notifications hidden, one of which is a different size, these were listed as Optional however unlike other Optional updates these were pre-ticked.
I have never 'reserved' in the GWX popup.

The recommended settings for updates is the first one 'install updates automatically (reccommended)'

Most people are wise enough now to select the next to last option in Windows updates, but they are still pushing the Windows 10 update by pre-ticking it.

I notice those three Win 10 hidden update notifications have today been removed presumably by MS.

My Laptop manufacturer says the projected date for possible Win 10 upgrade for my model is Nov 2015(originally it was Jan 2016). The support site lists no Win 10 drivers yet, I've checked, there are only the manufacturers utilities for Win 10.

I've always had optional (non-Important) updates switched off and I haven't had *any* W10-related updates, nags or anything else on either my 8.1 or 7 setups. Was getting a bit concerned after what they did with W8 to 8.1 (an un-removeable fortnightly nag) so I've been setting restore points (don't know if that would have helped though) and last night did a thorough check for relevant updates after they enforced a restart but... not a sausage.

So far I am in the clear.

Me too, it is the very first time I have ever heard of one coming through turned on /ticked.
