Interesting article on how Windows 10 memory management works.

http://lifehacker.com/why-is-windows...ram-1725076206

In a nutshell, if amount of memory required is greater than available RAM, the data is compressed before it is paged to disk memory. Time to decompress data is a quicker than accessing data to/from disk.

Computers are designed for and marketed for the masses so it is the responsibility of those selling them the stuff to make everything as simple as possible. If a significant number are having difficulties then something could be done better.

Hi Jimmy, if you are doing an in-place upgrade at this point then it just does take ages. I had Process Monitor (from SysInternals) running and so I knew it was doing stuff, but it took hours to finish looking like it was stuck many times before it finally finished, this is when you finally get the Licence Agreement screen, which you have to say yes to for Windows 10 to start installing

You would have to define 'Significant'. With W10 on more than 110 Million devices, how many are having problems?

They are a full blown science tool too.

I'd say that simplicity means a lot less choice and thus less science.

One has only to watch the News any night of the week for stories involving talking to the public to know that you will never be able to educate some folk

Tosh. What are you talking about?

Science does not depend on PCs. A scientist would choose the best tools to do his work. They would use a humble raspberry pi, a pc, tablet or the most powerful mainframes in the world etc. depending on needs.

Even great scientists are not necessarily power users of PCs. For some Excel and Word is all they need.

I really don't know how many people are having problems with W10 or if there are "significant" problems with the upgrade, I was just making a general point that the software suppliers do have a responsibility to make this as smooth as possible given the market they aim at.

You can have complexity within the simplicity. For example I'm a software engineer and need tools that are necessarily complex and flexible for software development but that doesn't mean I want to spend ages trying to work out why my PC is crashing when I do a simple task.

Some are that bad but there seems to be an awful lot of people who are not necessarily doing anything stupidly wrong but still have problems. It is difficult to cater for the really thick but the majority of people need software that just works and does what they want with the minimum of fuss, the software is marketed at these people.

Well MS made it as smooth and pain free as is possible on all the machines I've upgraded.
The problem with an OS upgrade is that the variables over 1 billion machines will be immense. The vast amount of problems will be because of software/hardware problems in the donor units and not the OS.
That said, I do understand your point. If only it were possible...

True fact is that Windows 7 and 8 users could feel at home with start menu and tablet mode, As for updates they should do Windows 10 In Your Control version for £10. Nice money earner to be able to control your own updates and no advertising.

I don't find the software overly complicated at all. The real issue is that Joe Public appears to have great difficulty following the simplest of instructions. For years people have been urged to back up their phones, tablets, computers etc. and yet for all the coverage concerning this subject the majority of people still do not back up their data.

How do you cater for people who just can't be bothered then complain when things go wrong?

Not if the majority of the said problems are user initiated which I maintain they are.

To test this theory I have had my dog attempt to install Windows 10 on an existing PC - he completed the task without incident.

I'm glad we now have some reliable statistics on the subject. Asked and answered.

Ah but a cat would expect to have it for them, and then you would have competent person issues again.

I've just tried installing windows 10, it spent ages downloading (even though I have auto update switched on so was under the impression that it should have already downloaded) and I got the black screen with the white circle, but when it reached about 8% it dumped me back in Windows 7 without explanation. I tried again and it spent ages downloading again (even though it had only just done the download) and then at the same point in dumped me back in Windows 7 again. Without any error messages I'm struggling to understand what exactly has failed???

The dogs and cats of this world world have needed to be alert to back out of that Windows 10 install program auto started by Microsoft in their admitted 'mistake'.

You have gone the media creation tool route I take it?

The very wise dogs and cats of this world would have recognised what a first class OS this really is and would not have contemplated backing out.

Unless they (and those of us who are deliberately delaying the upgrade) want more of the bugs ironing out first, of course. If it (W8.1) ain't broke... etc.
