I thought it was very good! Not my favourite episode of the 3, but still way up there!

I never realised it was a different writer at first but you could certainly tell the difference between the past episodes and this one!

I bet he discussed it with David Tennant when they were both in the live Quatermass last week!

..but enough about A & D.

Superb - I am still re-adjusting to the new series after having watched since the 60's - but I like it.

Rose stepping out into the past for the first time was a nice touch - watching her footprint in the snow in wonderment. The "humanity" of the Doctor shows through - he gets quite upset when the body count goes up (each week it seems!).

Best is there are 10 more to go - with a Dalek in epsiode 6..and news that U.N.I.T. will be back in the new series next year - maybe even a guest appearance by the Brigadier perhaps?

DW Confidential was great too. Lots on the TARDIS this week. The 60's clips look really old now though!

Couldn't help but be reminded of Raiders of the Lost Ark at some points this week
You took the words right out of my fingers.

Personally, I'd say all bets are off and anything's fair game.

I think stuff will be borrowed from both the original series, and the continuing adventures (books, audio etc) - things may not necessarily play out as they did originally in their respective media. Instead, we'll have a melting pot of both, and all elements will be remoulded to fashion the new series.

Cybermen may be used, they may not. Doesn't mean they never existed. And anyway - maybe they just existed in one particular timeline, maybe in many.

Maybe this Doctor exists in a different timeline to the previous incarnations. It's in the hands of the writers, so all we can do is watch and enjoy.

But a little harmless speculation never hurt anyone.

That sounds quite plausible. Certainly he made a big mistake which he should not have made. He was too busy arguing the point about whether to was allowable to recycle the corpses instead of considering whether the aliens could be trusted at all. Every time he tried to set a limit on them they didn't respond and he took their silence for agreement. He didn't ask why they behaved so violently when they took over a body. The Doctor isn't supposed to make mistakes like that without a reason.

I also thought this weeks episode was good.

I don't think I enjoyed quite as much as last weeks (mainly because I liked the emotional bits in last weeks and the fact that the doctor didn't grin too much).

Although the story and effects were good this week, I thought that somehow the story didn't seem to quite build up to quite the heights I was expecting it to but then I looked at my watch and realised the episode was almost over so I think the fact that it seemed to pass so quickly proved that I enjoyed it.

I think that the scary bits may have sent some of the younger viewers scurrying for the back of the sofa

I did get shivers seeing the reanimated dead! Not something you see at teatime very often!
Teatime? When I was a child teatime was about 2 hours before bedtime - which was 6pm (or else).

Today's kids are up far too late. A sign of the times (or shifting of the teatimes ), I guess.

I with you on the harmless speculation front as it's all part of the fun! It reminds me of when I was a kid and wondering what was going to happen next....the fact it generates so much buzz, whether it is positive or negative, means we are watching and talking about it again.

All to the good if you ask me.

In case nobody has answered this already - last week's story was off-planet (not far, but not on).

Absolutely!

And considering last week's episode was still being discussed today (the thread was still being posted on), maybe DW should borrow another programme's catchphrase - everybody's talking about it!

Mentioned on drwho-online.co.uk

says

UNIT to Return
According to the blurb on the BBC Press Office website, for week 17 on TV, UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce) are to return for Episode 5. Rose's boyfriend, Mickey, finds their details online and, they apparently save the day.

[Thanks to The BBC Press Office for the report]

and it probably means epsiode 5 of this series - I mis-read next series. So even better!

Whether you love it or hate it or are completely indifferent, it is certainly evoking a reaction from people on here, in the press and the public...keep talking...

So where is RTD leading us with this Time War/destruction of Gallifrey...down the road to enlightenment or right up the garden path?

... so maybe we have a rather crafty reinvention of the cliffhanger between episodes. That "big" overarching story is adding a new tension and a wish to find out what's really going on (or has already happened!)

Once again, the Doctor isn't the one doing the saving.

We've had Rose save Earth of the present day, Dickens saved it in his day, and UNIT coming to the rescue in a future episode.

Is this a hint to the Doctor's memory problems detailed in the book 'The Ancestor Cell', or does it point to something else?

I never used to watch Dr Who when I was younger, thought it was rubbish and Tom Baker was scary. But thought I'd give this one a shot, just to see how bad Billie Piper was.

But now I have to admit I am totally hooked. Billies really good (Im proved wrong) and I love CE's mad face and cheesy jokes. Its what Saturday night tv should be.

The tension is certainly mounting as each episode passes so RTD has done a good job in capturing the audience with this storyarc of the Time War. I hope we will get the answers at the end of the journey rather than like the X-Files we were left with more questions than any resolution.

Yes, it's been mentioned here already. Alternatively try the spoilers here for a little bit more information.

Great episode, appealed to the "Most Haunted" interest in me. The pace was a little slower and there was less intrusive background music but that clearly fit the time period of the episode.

I honestly gave up on Saturday night terrestrial tv ages ago but this series is well and truly something to look forward to

Yep - the overall story arc idea is lifted straight from Babylon 5, and was one of the most memorable things about the entire series.

I think you have to remember that although the BBC wanted this new series to do well (and it obviously is doing), they also had to plan for the fact that it might not.... so this series will be a 'self-contained' set of stories, (made all the better for having an ongoing story arc) able to end the show forever if they needed to. i.e. the Doctor dragged off into the Tardis at the end of episode 13, apparently dead.

They could end it there if need be.

The sudden announcement of a 'Christmas special' along with the commisioning of the second series gives further weight to this - they need to show he isn't dead, and also that he can regenerate. They have to reintroduce all of the concepts which we take for granted to a whole new generation, after all.
