The Type Cover is better than the Linx keyboard, but again at three times the price it should be. The linx hasn't got the kickstand, the cameras on the Surface are far better and the processor power is significantly better.

But whether those specs are worth £420 compared to £140, literally three times the price, comes down to how you're going to use it. You could use the Surface as your main and only PC, especially if at home you plug in a wireless keyboard and mouse and a second monitor to make it a dual monitor display. For tablet use while on the move, browsing the net, sending some emails and watching some videos the Linx is excellent value.
And both will get the Windows 10 free upgrade. The Edge browser, where you can make notes and drawings on web pages, looks really useful, plus Cortana....”

I picked up the Kit leather case and Bluetooth keyboard for £18 its fits the Linx perfectly and works a treat , how much is the Surface keyboard and case ? It also plugs into my HD tv at full 1080p and I can use a wireless mouse/keyboard and use it as a desktop but yes it all depends on what you are going to use it for , I only bought mine as a toy not to replace my other PCs even though it almost could but I am very impressed with the performance of it

I'm still impressed with my Surface RT. I didn't like Windows 8 GUI changes on my PC and plugged Classic Shell to fix it but on a tablet the W8 Metro UI is great. It makes sense on a tablet and even the original RT had things like multitasking that the iPad is only now getting.

I have to say I have never been a fan of Apple so went down the Android route for phones and tablets and still find Android slightly better than W8 but maybe that will change when W10 comes out next month

I have an Android phone, a HTC M8, and love it. My previous two smartphones were the One X and before that the Desire, all Android.
But for a tablet, which is far closer to a PC in terms of what I want to use it for, I went with the Surface. Even the base RT has the proper Windows desktop with all the familiar Windows folders, explorer, settings etc so it makes dealing with files a lot better, something that Android isn't good at IMHO.
And the dual UI is great, the tablet friendly Metro (I still call it Metro) and its apps and the traditional desktop with Word, Excel, Outlook, the desktop IE etc and all the folders and settings is far easier to use with the keyboard and trackpad since it's exactly the same as my Windows 8 PC. All the Android and Apple UI are purely tablet. You can use them with a mouse and keyboard but they're just not designed for that.

My iPad Air 2 is an absolute dream.
I love it.
No other tablet comes remotely close to it.
Worth every penny.
And more.

I'd always recommend any Android device over an Apple device any day.

The iPad has some great specs, but like all Apple products it is saddled by reliance on iTunes - which I've always found horrendous to use. Unless you jailbreak it of course, but Apple go out of their way to stop you doing even that!

With regards to your specific requirements and the fact you already have an Android device, the Galaxy tab seems to make more sense.

If I put a Nexus 7 next to it, that would be really close

It always depends on personal preference; I've yet to find any device (mobile, tablet or PC) that didn't have some kind of irritating flaw.

For me the irritating flaw in iOS is the keyboard, which is an irritating skeuomorphic mess (pretty sure Ive said he was removing skeuomorphic elements from iOS, yet the keyboard is unchanged).

Not really a fan of the stock Android keyboard either, especially the updated material design look.

Surprising that I much prefer the keyboard on WP8.1, it does - at least for me - work way better.

But as I said, it all comes down to personal preference.

if you can find a "good" friend with one - see if you can borrow it for a couple of days as that's going to be your best test

We have 2 iPads and 2 iPhones and I haven't touched iTunes in months. Most people don't need it anymore.

I have an ipad air 1 16gb, I bought it cheap of a man in a pub. It's very good for what I paid and what I use it for (Web surfing in front of of the telly and streaming video to telly from my pc) but do not get a 16gb because updates eat up the memory. I think apple may have discontinued 16gb?

If I had a choice though I'd go for either a surface pro or samsung tab especially if they have expandable memory. I prefer android generally because of I like to access the file structure and drag and drop etc.

Why do you think you are saddled with iTunes. I've owned an iPad for 2 years now and never use iTunes.

The only time I use iTunes is for my old iPod Classic. I did occasionally use some third party clients on Linux, but stopped when they ignored the capacity of the device ...

But for my iPhone 4S, haven't connected it to iTunes in years. I've occasionally connected it to the PC to copy pictures off - but that was just regular file copy. No iTunes.

I store all my multimedia stuff on my nas drive and then access that using a file browser app.

I wouldn't bother reading that. It's completely out of date.

Buy iPad - you get what you pay for.

More apps, better apps, great support, and OS updates for 3-4 years (Apple is still supporting iPad 2 later this year with iOS 9).

Once you're into the ecosystem, you'll want iPhone, Apple Watch and probably a Mac. The integration across devices is just insanely great and unparalleled.

Aye, therin lies the rub. Once you start with Apple, it's apple all the way. Bespoke chargers, connectors- basically to get the full user experience (which is undeniably good) you need to go Apple across the board.

Also you might want to read about working conditions at Foxconn.

The factories Samsung use have an even more grotesque reputation. At least Apple is pro-actively trying to do something about working conditions.

I agree proprietary connectors and accessories are almost always very overpriced. But I think some of that cost is probably overcome by the number of years Apple supports these devices with updates. Is Samsung supporting any phone or tablet released when iPad 2 / iPhone 4s was released with the current version of Android? (and iPad 2 / iPhone 4s owners are getting the next major version of iOS later this year too)

I agree with this post 100%. Apple devices are expensive but they are high quality. I also agree about the added advantages of having more devices. I started off with an iPhone and now I have 2 iPads, a MacBook, an apple watch and an Apple TV. Everything works very well with each other. Not only do I think that the individual products are better than their android coutberparts, the ecosystem and integration cannot be matched.

I had the full size iPad 4 Retina for a couple of years. For the most part I liked it. The problem is I am of the PC generation and so always wanted more control / a file system / to be able to control my music without horrible iTunes. I even needed a computer to set up my iPad.
So 3 months ago I bought the Samsung Tab S. Finally I have control I can copy & paste/ create folders. The picture is amazing / the sound is so good!, it looks much sleeker than my old iPad.

Perhaps the Air is a vast improvement over the Retina, but I bet you still don't have the control!

This reminds me a bit of that scientific jam test. Consumers were 10 times MORE likely to buy given a choice of 6 rather than a wider choice of 24 jams.

So how more times are people likely to buy an iPad or Tab than any other brand, when given this simple choice of 2 ?

Not sure why you needed a computer to set up your iPad.

Well you did in the early days. But not necessary any more.

Too open ended question. It is so easy to pay over the odds for any tablet. It's like buying cars.

If cheaper Samsung does all you need - thats your answer.

Having bought a Linx 8 (full) windows 8.1 tablet for £70, I would never buy an android (or apple) tablet again.

Or get a Surface 3 which has a far greater range of proper software, being that it will run all Windows PC programs while the iPad can only run apps. And Windows 10 will be fully supported for a decade at least. Boasting about "3-4 years" support isn't really a good deal.
