So 3 months ago I bought the Samsung Tab S. Finally I have control I can copy & paste/ create folders. The picture is amazing / the sound is so good!, it looks much sleeker than my old iPad.

Perhaps the Air is a vast improvement over the Retina, but I bet you still don't have the control!”

This is one of the things I loved about my Surface RT. You had the proper PC desktop with all the Windows explorer, folders, control panel etc. Any time you wanted to do something advanced that option was there .Otherwisestay in Metro and let it handle everything .

Having been recommended the Linx 10 here I just bought one to give it a go. For £160 it's fantastic .Full Windows 8 with free upgrade to Windows 10. The build quality is good, though not quite as good as the Surface, and it works perfectly. Now if only Firefox and Chrome came in a touch friendly version...

A tablet is not a PC though, they are different animals. People buy a tablet then think 'oh I would like to use a keyboard with it' then then want to run MS compatible s/w and basically what they actually require is a PC not a tablet.

The Surface is a full, proper, tablet. The Metro UI I hated on my pc works perfectly on a tablet. It also has tablet features the iPad doesn't, like being able to run two apps side by side,a feature it took Apple three years to copy.
But every now and then you might want to do more with your tablet. You're on the train and someone sends you an email with a photo that needs retilouching for example. Now you can open upPhotoshop or PSP and use the Surface's proper touch sensitive digitiser.

If it's a tablet what possible disadvantage is there to having a whole extra level of useability? If you don't want to use it then don't.
What is the downside?
Because for many people it's a huge advantage. A tablet you can use on the train to school or work that you can then use as a proper PC when you get there.
With an iPad when you get to work or school it's still just a tablet.

Surely a tablet that runs the latest Windows is the best of both worlds?

I think Microsoft was moving towards a more limited 'Walled Garden', even more so with 10 than 8, so I am slightly confused by this 'Full Proper System' thing.

It is part marketing.

Don't be confused as there is no walled garden to be afraid of. You keep saying it but don't show anything to prove it. And MS need to keep business customers happy as well which can't work with a walled garden.

The only 'walled garden' MS tried was the Surface RT. The Surface Pro, the new Surface 3 and W8, W10 etc are full PCs that you can install anything from anywhere on. I doubt MS could stop you if they tried, no would they want to. The big selling point of PCs running Windows is that it can run software made by anyone and therefore has the biggest software market. From people choosing to install Firefox and Chrome to corporations running bespoke software and business systems, that's why Windows is so popular.

No way are MS trying to create a walled garden. What even makes you even think that?

I tried an Android tablet and it was dreadful, I got rid of it and went back to iPad albeit a mini, which my son mainly uses. I'll get the new Air when it comes out.

Which Android was it though? There are some very good ones but there are also some awful ones.
