In the hospital, Alison wakes up and goes to the baby's cot. She cannot wake him and rushes into the corridor, shouting for help. The midwife decides to rush him to the treatment room and asks someone else to remain with Alison, who is of course very upset.
Kevin, Jim and Ken are celebrating the birth in the Rovers when Kevin's mobile phone rings. He assumes it will be his dad, Bill. It is in fact the hospital. He tells Jim that something is wrong with the baby and he has to return there immediately.
Kevin, Alison and the midwife wait anxiously for some news; Kevin getting angrier and more frustrated by the second. Finally, the consultant paediatrician arrives. The news is not good. Jake has contracted an infection - Group B Strep., during delivery. It is so severe that nothing can be done. Jake will die. They will be taken to him to hold him and cuddle him and prepare to say goodbye to him.
