The Real Big Brother
Parish15

Everyone complains (myself included) about how BB is nothing like the good old C4 days etc which is more often than not referred to as the 'real' version etc etc

But I was just sat here thinking, and in comparison to what Big Brother really means in terms of George Orwells novel etc is C5's BB a truer reflection.

BB isn't about right and fair such as diary room privacy for example but about manipulating an environment to fit their agenda. With that in mind C5 with its endless twists in favour of producers favourites and constant conflict causing tasks is so in line with the divide and conquer and control ethos of BB maybe theyve got it right after all

What do people think?

Google him, he wrote the novel 1984 where Big Brother and the concept of it first appeared. It's more a commentary on the future of society than..twists and secret bunkers but a very very good read, highly recommend it

This year I had to come to terms with the fact that the BB I knew and loved had died a death. RIP old BB. This became less and less like BB when all the manipulations took hold, perhaps it is what the viewers expect, I don't know anymore.

I will still watch it, knowing that anyone on there can win, but I have put a bet on Marc because I think BB have made it his show.

But that's my point the concept of the original BB was all about manipulating the masses and this is what C5 are doing to a T

I think this reply was a nod to Belo not knowing who Shakespeare was

Yeah in 1984 the Ministry of Truth can just rewrite history any way they like. One minute Eurasia is the enemy and the next they are the ally and Eastasia is the enemy.

They missed a trick by not calling the diary room "Room 101" though.

It's always been about manipulating the housemates...control and punishment/reward, which is fair enough. But in the early days we were BB as well...watching and controlling along with them, making our own observations and judgements. Now we are manipulated ourselves, we are not allowed to see the truth of what's happening but are force fed a version...they are playing with our heads along with the housemate's. I find it far less enjoyable.

so the point seems to be C5 have accidentally stumbled into highbrow if they ever twig, the person responsible will be immediately sacked

fair point

But the point that Big Brother takes it's name from is 'Big Brother is always watching you'

Whilst the Orwellian Big Brother was a master of misinformation and manipulation it came from being all seeing and knowing all. I doubt even the Orwellian Big Brother would have been nearly as effective if his information was based on 45 minutes of heavily edited and selective highlights.

LMAO you're right but if we too are targets then keeping us out of the loop becomes imperative
