Great game - great shame it won't see the light of day until December 2017 at the very earliest.

Anyone paid the extra to be on the credits?
Never played or seen the original Shenmue games, I'm assuming its similar to TLOU or am I miles off.

I would donate for a new Streets of Rage game , would pay extra for Blaze Fielding outfits

Nothing like TLOU. Yakuza is the closest comparison.

Laughing at the "not out for ages" comments, SO WHAT, IT BLOODY EXISTS! That's something we couldn't say before last night, Shenmue was a dead IP with SEGA literally doing nothing with it and the hopes for a new game was just faint because it was stuck in limbo, but now, we got details, it's happening, it's real, Shenmue III is now a reality.

Yep, something like $99 million in today's money. I suppose Sony must be putting money in. Could it be that if the target is reached then Sony sub the rest of the Dev cost?
The clip I saw suggested that if the stretch goals are reached it would be 'the full experience ' which sounded like kickstarter is going to pay for bonus towns. It's all a wee bit vague.
The second one, all costs in, came close to $190 million. It was a massive gamble for Sega, and part of the reason they ended up out of the console market altogether.

I suspect that history of it being a massive critical and cult success, yet never getting the huge sales is what has put people off of doing it again. Much safer to make a minecraft clone or the next generic FPS, lower costs and much easier to predict the sales it will bring in.

I have a few alarm bells ringing here- One a sequel to the most expensive game of its era that cost somewhere between 50-70 million dollars back in 2000, is expecting to made for $2 million, something doesn't add up- A proper shenmue sequel can't be a continuation of what was before, they were amazing and groundbreaking in their day, but are severely dated now, keep that structure and you've failed before you start.

Secondly, the digital only release on PS4 suggests that it may be a Network title, which means a significantly reduced budget to not be a boxed title (Theoretically its a major triple A title, why no boxed release?) Also, Sega still have the Shenmue trademark as far as I'm aware, because they renewed it in 2014- So I'm assuming this is being made under licence from Sega, despite them having no involvement in the development (That won't be cheap)

Financially, there's something else going on here, and I'm not sure what it is, but I'm loathed to place money on the kickstarter until its more transparent what the game will actually be and where it's going (If it was a Sony Exclusive, I'd assuming they were subbing it, but with it coming to pc I'm not so sure)

It won't be out until 2018 at the earliest. Good games take time to make, let them make it.

I agree, the longer the better (within reason), providing they are actively developing and improving it during that time. Don't want another Final Fantasy Versus XIII/Final Fantasy XV !!

Still pinching myself, been waiting so long for this. I know we still got a long way to go, but at least it is happening.

The $2 million was just a goal to see if there was enough interest, the goal was reached so Sony will be a partner to get it made.

Looks like I'll be getting myself a PS4 at some point within the next couple of years then.

Yeah, rumours are the KickStarter is for the PC version of the game to be handled, which is why there's no physical PS4 copy available or anything relationg to the PS4 version outside of a code for the game.

Indeed, it would seem that those targets could well be for the pc system.

Perhaps the expanded areas will be dlc on the ps4 should the kickstarter goal of 4mil not be met.

In any case, the fans have now spoken and it would appear Sony are fully on board, giving suzuki full creative control.

This is just awesome!

This is exactly what I was trying to say earlier. A deal that if it gets x, y or z amount Sony will back it.

My question is, would backing the $29 version get me a UK PSN copy?

If so i'm in!

I've been trying to back it at the $29 tier but my card keeps getting declined. I checked and (as it bloody should) it has plenty of money in the account. I'm doing it on my phone, is that the problem?

If even Shenmue 3 can get made after all this time why can't Ubisoft sort out Beyond Good and Evil 2?

Gone over $3,000,000 now. I can easily see this going over $4,000,000.

I played both on DC back in the day, and ended up loving the second game even more than the first. While I love inhabiting Yokosuke, there was just that perfectly managed mysterious and almost unwelcoming feeling of being in China that burned itself into my little gamer's heart. Ryo wasn't necessarily going to find easy help or friendly people here. And yet the romance of the surroundings wasn't lost, and many of the people you did meet were very special indeed. Who can forget training with the old man by the blossom tree? The music really soared even more too, and imho had way, way more memorable pieces. [EDIT: This piece is a fave]

So for me, I love the first game so very much, but the second one completely sealed the deal. I was very lucky, as I got to play them back to back, going immediately into number 2 off the back of a magic Christmas with the first.

I have to say too that I wasn't so bothered with the new gen of consoles, but with The Last Guardian and of course especially Shenmue 3, I will definitely be in for a PS4 in time.
