I was surprised to see a small jar of Caviar reduced in Waitrose to 50p from £2. I'd have assumed the normal price would be at least a fiver. Just about to give it a try once I've research a bit on preparation.

It must have been a very small jar, or poor quality. Give it a try, good quality Caviar is lovely

I tried some once in Russia, (the orange stuff not the black) and I thought it was vile. My OH said it was OK though.

It was just served on crackers.

Strange texture and tastes a bit like the sea. Not seeing the appeal to be honest but as someone said maybe it's a matter of quality.

Read the lable to make sure you're actually getting Caviar and not a substitute. As said, for that price you won't be getting decent quality.

I remember at Christmas seeing jars of it in LIDL and had to have a little laugh.

So what's so special about the flavour of the good quality stuff?

Just to say it was Lumpfish caviar.

Lumpfish isn't what most would consider 'real' caviar - which would be from the sturgeon. I quite like it though and sometimes have it as part of a "Smörgåsbord" with taramasalata, prawns, squid/mussels in sauce. Eat with warm pitta bread.

I've tried capelin caviar too - not as nice as lumpfish. I have tried sturgeon caviar in my youth - wasn't impressed really, never felt the need to splash out again on fish eggs

I absolutely love sturgeon caviar. It's deliciously salty and I love the texture of the little black eggs popping in your mouth. I like lumpfish caviar too, though not as much as the 'real' stuff - we have it at Christmas on blinis with smoked salmon and sour cream.
