Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining because I'm a massive KC fan but I find it interesting that they've playlisted her last two songs but yet ignore acts such as Leona Lewis who produce 'similar' style of music (big ballads/vocals) and they're from the same sort of background like X Factor & American Idol...

So why do the deem Kelly Clarkson more relevant than Leona Lewis?

Kelly Clarkson has a little bit more of an edge to her than Leona Lewis.

I agree with that. Also although I'm a big Leona fan her new era is shaping up to be a crushing disappointment as far as I'm concerned, while I think Kelly's new album Piece By Piece is fantastic.

Radio One has always pushed American acts at the expense of British ones. Any two bit rapper or RnB 'star' will get playlisted while they snub acclaimed home grown acts like Goldfrapp, La Roux, etc.

Goldfrapp and La Roux are now 6 Music/Radio 2 acts.

Radio 1's current playlist includes the following British artists:

Catfish and the Bottlemen
Circa Waves
Muse
Rixton
Royal Blood
Rudimental
Tinie Tempah
Ben Howard
Duke Dumont
Ed Sheehan
Enter Shikari
Everything Everything
George the Poet
James Bay
Krept and Konan
Mumford & Sons
Olly Murs
Rita Ora
Wolf Alice
Davide Zowie
Lucy Rose
Mark Ronson
RHODES
Years & Years

Which means 60% of the playlist is British music.

I think as far as R1 are concerned Kelly is still relevant and getting chart positions where as Leona hasn't really had a non Christmas hit since 2009?

(I really like both of the acts in question)

I'm guessing it's because Radio 1 tends to play more uptempo music, that appeals to a younger audience.

Leona Lewis mostly does ballads and although she's a younger artist, her sound tends to appeal more to an older audience that listens to BBC2.

they ignore loads of popular american acts aswell to be honest.

that new Leona song is crap, so i see why they didnt playlist it.

but they also dont playlist britney, fifth harmony and so on. its a very boring station all in all, i havent listened to it for years!
they had it on in the gym once and i demanded they put Kiss FM back on (even though they play the same stuff on kiss over and over and over) thats how bad radio 1 is to me

Heartbeat Song is radio friendly. Fire Under My Feet isn't.

I guess this is where the line is drawn. Like Gigi4 posted, Radio 1 target audience is 13-19 year olds. That's why Radio 1 are play listing all these mind numbingly terrible dance tracks like So Freakin' Tight, Take Me Away and House All Night. Songs that are so non-descript they almost don't exist (i.e. songs so mundane nobody will remember them in 6 months time). This is coming from someone who loves dance music.

Most of the dance hits this year have been as terrible as those nasty trance covers of 80s hits that were popular around 2003. Eww!!!

Maybe Leona needs someone to do a single mix for her next single. A bit like how Mel C got Hex Hector to remix I Turn To You for her single release.

FUMF is a song that deserves to be snubbed, it's just not a good song. I was so dissapointed being a huge Leona fan when I heard it & I knew it wouldn't achieve success despite being told it would. It frustrates me so much as Leona can do SOO much better, and shes so talented. I'm hoping that this song won't affect her radio support for her next single, but I'm really worried it will. Having heard snippets/other songs, she has far better material, so it just irritates me how her label(s) always seem to pick an AWFUL lead single.

Why? Because they're not 25 years old? And yet they playlist Americans like Kanye West who is almost 40 and Pharrell WIlliams who's well into his 40s! La Roux is still in her twenties. It's all a joke.

It's not just them who don't get playlisted - Meghan Trainor's Dear Future Husband wasn't put on the playlist either. And she's only 21.

Who in all seriousness would compare Meghan Trainor with a critically acclaimed act like La Roux?

One is relevant to the Radio 1 target audience. The other is not.

It's more a question of whether La Roux's audience corresponds more closely to the audience for Radio 1, 6 Music or Radio 2. There's nothing to stop teenagers listening to R2 if they like the music on there, or fifty-somethings listening to R1 if they prefer it, or anyone listening to 6 Music if the music there is more to their taste.

Radio 1 is awful. I would say it represents the 'youth culture' wing of British music, but when you consider it carefully, it doesn't to that at all either.

I'm guessing that the average 19 year old Radio 1 listener isn't going to get excited for a Leona Lewis song. As for Kelly Clarkson, I'm surprised she hasn't been bumped to Radio 2 yet (not because shes over 30, but because she's been around for a long time and probably has an older audience). But then Kelly is a bit cooler than Leona, she has more upbeat songs and Heartbeat Song is better than Fire Under My Feet. Also I guess Radio 1 do audience research to see what their target audience want to listen to and they probably show that Kelly is more popular than Leona.

I wouldn't say that Kelly and Leona's music is that similar as Kelly's is generally rock/pop whereas Leona's is generally more a kind of ballad/pop.

They don't always playlist Kelly Clarkson. They didn't play 'Catch My Breath', and I don't think they playlisted 'Dark Side' either - despite being one of her best.

If Leona released something worth listening too, I imagine they would play her. She's not that old so they have no reason not too. Her latest track is really bad though.

I'm pretty sure Dark Side was play listed as she performed it in Live Lounge
