My Sony receiver keeps turning my TV off
I have recently bought the Sony STR-DN1050 and it is a great piece of kit but it seems to be turning my TV off to standby every now and again. It only happens sporadically and can be whilst I am using a variety of sources (I think - although it has just happened whilst I am watching Sky). My TV is a Philips 42PFL9703.
Any suggestions as to what is causing this? Thanks. |

If they are connected via HDMI turn off whatever both Sony and Phillips call HDMI control/CEC.
In my experience HDMI control is the spawn of Satan and it's only purpose is to totally screw you over. Rarely if ever does it actually make life easier but rather goes off and does something completely illogical that only frustrates your attempt to do whatever YOU want to do. So I just turn it off and take control of my kit rather than have my kit take control of me

Presumably it's connected via HDMI?, in which case it's probably doing what it's supposed to via CEC - you could disabling auto-switch-off on the STR (presuming it has it?), or try disabling HDMI-CEC control on the TV.

CEC is one of those "standards" for which each manufacturer has their own unique interpretation. It may work if you have an all one make system but otherwise can be a mess.

Thanks guys - I have turned it off and will see if that fixes it although I think I did this previously and it didn't.
Nigel - why is it doing what it is supposed to? It is turning the TV off at random times? |

It would make some kind of sense if the amp was turning off the TV when you switched to using an audio only source such as radio or CD player.

Then again, it is a Philips TV, so perhaps there's some weird logic that Philips have deployed which results in the set randomly turning itself off.
A feature which every other manufacturer would deem a fault

Okay - I have turned off HDMI control from my TV and the Sony receiver but it still happens. It happened whilst using Apple TV last night. Any other suggestions?

Have you set the TV to switch to standby on "no signal"?

Thanks. I will try that as a last resort. My TV isn't currently connected to any network so it will have to be a factory reset option. Weird it only started happening since I got the Sony receiver though.
Let's hope the reset sorts if out...... |

Could be the control board of power supply, just a coincidence the problem started when you connected the new amp.

Here's what I have found. The problem only happens after I put the TV on standby using my Sky TV remote control. Then the TV randomly turns off / on etc. This has happened to me twice and has been fixed the same way. Make sure the TV is on before starting the process below... I suppose it **could** be this as until recently I was using a Harmony remote control but switched to the Sky one recently.
-Turn off the TV using the Philips remote (so it is in stand by) and wait for the normal click noise from the TV (a double click from mine). -Turn the TV back on with the Philips remote. Wait for the click to confirm it's on and wait for any lights to stop flashing. -Turn off the TV again with the remote so it's in stand by again. -Then turn off the power to the set by unplugging it. Leave unplugged for at least a minute. -Plug the TV back in, wait for it to settle down then turn on using the 'on' button on the TV (don't use the remote). This reset process is direct from Philips UK and works on my set every time. Finally - don't put the TV into standby using a remote control (especially any non-Philips remote) and it should not happen again! |

That may give a clue as to whether it is the Sony or not. The other thing it may be is some other device connected to the Sony. This may still be routed via the Sony to the TV even when you are watching the TV's tuner and just using the Sony for audio. For example on my Onkyo amp if I was watching something on my PVR then switch over to the TV audio input on the amp the PVR is still connected via HDMI to the TV. I have switched HDMI control off on my system so not sure if that is also active along with the video. So always possible a control signal from some other device is finding it's way to the TV causing the problem. |

One test. Try disconnecting the HDMI lead between Sony and TV for a while. You'll obviously only be able to watch the internal tuner of the TV and listen via the TV speakers for the duration. But if the TV does not switch off at all then plug the HDMI back in and see if it now switches off.

Power supply issues in the home? I have experience of 2 sony tv's which kept going back to standby randomly. No timers set no Eco power down selected. In the the first example, some time ago I installed one of those surge protected extension boards and connected their Sony and other equipment to that. Since then that Sony has never switched off randomly.
The 2nd example was one of our sonys. Powered it on but only went to standby. Power led was flickering. Would not power on. Had a look at our surge protected ext board and the surge light was out. Looks like something had fried the surge protection and that saved the devices plugged into it. Replaced it and works fine again. I think sonys are more sensitive than most to nasties in the power supplies and seem to go to standby to protect themselves if anything unusual is detected. |
