Samsung S5 lag - stock Android?
Talizman
22-06-2015
I recently went from an iPhone 5 to the Samsung S5 purely for the larger screen and while I'm not disappointed in any way with that, the S5 certainly seems to suffer from lagging often.

I've done all the usual things like disable active wallpapers, changing to a different launcher etc which all helped but there's still some stuttering that I never experiences with the lesser-powered iPhone.

Anyway I've moved on from trying all that and what I've read online is it's likely to be the Samsung bloatware so I'm looking at rooting it and installing a basic, stripped-down and no-frills version of Lollipop to put on there so does anyone know of a reliable source I can get one from from?

I'm not interested in CyanogenMod btw....

TIA

I had the exact same issue, I went from the iPhone 5 to S5, Lag is very noticeable, I remember my camera and gallery app taking up to 5 seconds to open.

I played around with a few roms, The Samsung based roms all had lag issues or other problems, The AOSP Roms which are based on Cyanogen Mod also had issues with the camera etc.

In the end I gave up and bought an iPhone 5C.

If you do go down the AOSP based route you will:

Get worse battery life
Loose useful features like the IR blaster and fingerprint scanner (which you may or may not use)
Have a much worse camera

Of course you gain many useful features based on the particular ROM. With S5 being such a popular phone it will have all the usual suspects available - Liquid Smooth, Paranoid Android, Omni etc. The default for a novice would be CM especially as the S5 is supported by the CM installer (I think). However if you are dead set against CM you need to go to XDA and read the various threads unless someone on here can be more specific (I like Paranoid Android as well as CM but have no experience with the S5). Just don't ask which is the best ROM on XDA.

The S5 was a funny device. Amazing specs yet it was sluggish. An old £100 moto g is smoother. It's the last time I buy a Samsung.

I have the S5 and its flawless, If your looking for a stock rom go to sammobile and get a non-network rom

*bump*

OK I'm now coming around to the possibility of Cyanogenmod.

I have my reservations because I'm a creature of habit and don't like needing to change how I use my phone. The last time I used Cyanogenmod was a few years ago on my old HTC Desire, I don't remember what the Android menu was like but after I installed it all the settings were in different places etc and if I remember correctly the whole menu screen was like a circle or carousel so I got rid of it and went back to whichever version of Android was on the phone.

If I install Cyanogenmod now is the interface still different to 'normal' Android? I'm sure I read somewhere online that it looks virtually identical with all/most settings etc in the same place as I'd find them on my S5 but I've seen clips where it looks totally different.

Also is my phone likely to run more smoothly with it? I'm aware certain apps like banking etc won't work once rooted.

Cyanongen Mod is based on the Android Open Source Project with additional features, apps and services added. Consider it an improved version of AOSP Android. Paranoid Android, Omni etc are built in a similar way (and some are built on CM). All of these AOSP roms will look and behave in a similar way. And AOSP is “normal” Android, i.e. Andoroid that hasn’t been skinned by a manufacturer. A Nexus uses “normal” Android.

What you described with your Desire was replacing the heavily skinned version of Android (Sense) with a “normal” version of Android. If you stick CM on your S5 you will see the same again Samsungs skin (TouchWiz) will be gone and an AOSP look will be there.

Now we can argue all day about which is the best but it is a matter of opinion. What you want is improved performance but keeping all the stock Samsung goodness. That isn’t a problem. There will be a whole host of developers over on XDA who will have taken the latest Samsung firmware and tweaked it to eliminate lag, improve battery life etc, and by using one of these you will retain all the menus, settings and functions you are used to. I am running such a ROM on my LG G3. So go over to XDA and have a good look and read about what is out there.

Yet HTC seems to get a lot of bad press mostly due to the camera, but the core experience is so much smoother and slicker than a Samsung. The One series and even the latest desire phones are very fast and no lagging/stuttering.

yet people keep opting to go the Samsung route, which just provides them with a buggy sluggish experience. Specially for those coming off ip[hones to a Samsung, then think all Android handsets are like this. Not true, it's just Samsung bloating up their OS to ridiculous levels causing big performance issues.

Touchwiz is known for it's laggy interface. The Galaxy S6 recently came out with a stripped down version of Touchwiz and 3GB ram, and you can't even multitask on it (The Galaxy S3 literally does a better job). If you have a Samsung device, your best bet is finding a better rom on XDA. There are so many great roms by devs on XDA that fix the silly problems that Samsung stock roms have.

Yes yes I've heard it all before, I'm stupid for getting a Samsung etc etc

None of that is relevant to the question I'm asking though.

Try a new launcher. That will give u an idea of what cyanogen mod is like. Try Apex launcher

Launchers make little difference, I've tried Google and Nova.

I'm more interested in Cyanogenmod now anyway.

Just be aware when you trip Knox that's it, no warranty.

Supposedly Samsung don't actually care and repair the device anyway.

That would be nice, I haven't tripped knox on my S6 just because of this. It's currently in for repair for the 3rd time, so I wouldn't want to lose my warranty even though I really want to put a better rom on it.
