Anyone Agree?
To use a word the BBC has often used when explaining their attempts to influence viewers, I think the music industry wants to "navigate" music listeners, particularly younger people towards their choices.
In that they are very effective. You've only to trawl through this forum to see how narrow is the musical perspective of many of the contributors. They intern, influence their contemporaries. But it's all down to what exposure they get. It's easy for them to get "pigeon-holed." Older people seem to have broader tastes. For example in my early teens, I had access to an aunt's old collection of big band jazz records, bought for her by a GI boyfriend during WWll. It was my introduction to jazz. Other kids of my age were only aware of what the BBC churned out and not much more. My record/CD/mp3 collection, includes lots of different genres . I'll listen to anything with a good tune. |
