Madness, without a shadow of a doubt. they were fun, funny, didn't/don't take themselves serioulsy, had great videos, great songs and their music is loved by people across every generation.

I'd also add:

Depeche Mode (although they are pop/rock)
FGTH
OMD
Madness
Soft Cell
Spandau Ballet
Culture Club
Wham!
Backstreet Boys
Take That

Abba & Spice Girls in my opinion are the best "pop" groups that ever were

Fair enough, some good alternative choices you've made there though. What was it about Madness you didn't like?

With all these overlapping genres. I'm not sure this question means much.

In their primary incarnation (albums 1-5) Roxy were an Art Rock band who help defined that genre.

In terms of bands in the 90s/00s (I wasn't even born in the 80s I am not familiar with many of the bands mentioned above).

I am going to put the Sugababes forward, I know a lot of their music was electro pop and dance but they still released some very good pop tunes.

I am probably in the minority but Atomic Kitten too. It was pure pop thats what I loved about them.

I also notice that many of you don't have memories that start before the 70s.

Before ABBA there was The Beach Boys, The Monkees, The Seekers, The Hollies, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Sly and the Family Stone, The Mamas and The Papas.....amongst others.

I suppose there were several reasons: part of it was simply the style of music and because I found their wackiness contrived, but also, I couldn't identify with their adopted personas and I didn't like Sugg's singing style. Their initial association with far-right skinheads didn't exactly help, even though I'm sure it was unjustified.

Yes, their association with the NF lot certainly wasn't something they ever wanted, they were very unhappy that the racist skinheads latched on to them. They were a ska band, they embraced Jamaican music by working in that style, and were heavily involved in the Red Wedge movement of the 80s so were the polar opposite of the far right.

I'm not sure their wackiness was particularly contrived either. It may have been exaggerated for their vidoes, but if it was contrived, then they've done a remarkable job of keeping it up for the last 30 years. I think they'e just a genuinely funny bunch of blokes and that comes across in their music and in interviews and other appearances.

Still, if you don't like ska, and you don't like Suggs' voice, nothing else is going to make you like them I guess. Thanks for explaining why you don't like them though.

Since the mid 90s

Take That
Spice Girls
Steps
S Club 7
Girls Aloud
Sugababes
One Direction
Backstreet Boys
N Sync
Pussycat Dolls

Just thinking of pop groups with big sales, longevity, record holders etc.

I would argue that what constitutes pop music as a genre is defined as what is popular music at the time, e.g. Rock n' Roll was the pop music of the 1950s.

I was thinking about when soul music really became mainstream in the 60s, 70s with Motown in the forefront. The Supremes or The Jacksons would have been a better choice.

i agree.. i didnt find madmess contrived at all, to me they were just ordinary guys making music and having fun..

certainly one of our best pop bands.

yeah its a rather nebulous description really. strictly speaking all chart material (or material aimed at the chart or chart music fans) is pop..
