A few weeks ago I had to use the 118 118 directory enquires service. I've been on holiday since and can't for the life of me remember what I was looking for, except that I wasn't successful so didn't get connected. Now I see on my Talk talk telephone bill that I was charged nearly £9 for just over a minute of a useless enquiry. It's this the usual going rate?

From the 118 118 website:
What Does it Cost to Use 118 118?

Calls to 118 118 cost £1.88 per call plus £2.57 per minute, (minimum 60 second charge) from most landlines. This is how BT charges for landlines, but there may be differences in how other networks charge.

"Just over a minute" probably means 2x 2.57, so there's £7.02 just for 118 118, the rest is probably TalkTalk's extra. Use Google, it's much cheaper

One of the downsides of introducing "competition" where it isn't needed. I don't remember BT charging this much when they held the monopoly on directory enquiries services.

As has been said, at least there's the internet

I just don't get it. Why would anybody ever even think of using 118 118?

There's always 0800 118 FREE, but getting it to work is harder than winning the lottery.

It seems to be only a barker for 118 188, so the sponsors are being ripped off.

Why people pay for directory enquiries when you can get it for free from the BT website is beyond me.

I didn't have access to the web at the time and this was the only number I could think of.

0800 numbers are free from mobiles from Wednesday - I wonder what effect that will have on this service?

Probably none at all because it simply doesn't work ! Try finding your own number, you'll see what I mean. It's just a way of promoting 118 118.

I rang BT to just get a phone number, must have been before I got the Internet but they were very quick to 'connect' me to it, before I could get a word in they had the number ringing and it cost a lot I'm sure.
