The first year I remember was 1994...Just late night highlights of the pyramid stage with Rage Against the Machine & Spin Doctors (think this might be on youtube)..I think the Waterboys were playing as well. All very crusty

The crowd for RATM was one massive 5000 people moshpit. Orbital played this year as the first electronic group and absolutely smashed. Check that on youtube.

I would say it became more fashionable 95-98. And now its just a rich kids indie pop picnic in a somerset cow field

Well, I seem to remember that Channel 4 used to have rights to show Glastonbury under the title of "Four Goes To Glastonbury".

I used to love looking at the tv schedules when I was younger and at the time, I was wondering what is that exactly This was long before I realised it was a music festival down in Somerset.

In the 80s either ITV or ch4 would show random hour highlights of Glasto, I think I saw Siead OConner on it once, about midnight.

Really wasn't a "big" cultural thing at that time, felt very much more part of the "anti-culture", attrating more traveller types etc, and more was made about the Legend of the Laylines, etc.

When I went to Reading Festival in 1989, it felt like the " equal" to Glasto in cultural highlights, it seemed to really increase in popularity from 1990 onwards, first time I went was in 92 and by then it was the place to be really. I don't think it was televised in 92, certainly not the extensive coverage that started up a few years later.

i think it wasn't until the BBC took over the rights in 1997 that they started broadcasting live. there wasn't much if anything on the tv in the 80s but the festival changed a lot between the 80s and 90s. freeview made a big difference as it allowed more free access to multi channels for the masses so they could broadcast live on other channels and leave the main ones alone or just broadcast parts
