(haven't googled so I know I haven't done 'my bit' but still....)

Going to Carphone Warehouse tomorrow to get a phone (big store, not busy around 9am)

Looking for cheap pay-as-you-go phone with a camera.
Will probably make about 10 calls on it, if that, intending it for emergency use only - so want the credit to remain there until used - and to receive "we're on our way" type texts.
Won't take it abroad, won't be texting umpteen times a day, not interested in aps.
Price upto £100.

Why not just get the cheapest PAYG phone as possible and get a decent compact camera?

Why have 2 devices when you can have 1?

Don't most / pretty much ALL phones come with a camera, and cost wise phone < phone+camera.
CPW online help guy pointed me to the MICROSOFT LUMIA 535, and iiuc there is a certain tariff available whereby I only need to top-up £1/month to keep it active - sorted.

The Lumia 535 would definitely do the job, the Lumia 435 would be OK as well (cheaper but camera is only fixed focus if that matters). Really any of the cheap handets will do. If you get approached in the shop don't tell them you want to spend £100 as they will make sure you do. Tell them you have £40 but could stretch a little bit more.

As for tarrifs - the Three 3-2-1 PAYG is your best bet (depending on the coverage being OK). Just top up £10 and your credit will stay active providing you make a call/text at least once every six months. Its 3p a minute calls and 2p per text.

You may well have to buy your phone with a top up for another network such as Vodafone or O2 but all CPW phones are unlocked and you can just use the Three PAYG service.

^ re: Three 3-2-1 PAYG <- hot damn.

Am googling it right now and thinking maybe I should simply go for a phone with this tariff attached to begin with rather than going thru the hassle/simplicity(?) of waiting for one topup to run out then switching over.

Because the camera on a phone for £100 isn't going to be up to much. Whilst a £10/15 would be fine for what the op wants and you can get a decent quality camera for £85/90

If the phone you want is cheaper to buy PAYG from Three then go for it. It may be cheaper from CPW (or somewhere else) even with a top up. Don't fell obliged to use the Voda or O2 sim card. Either keep it as a spare or sell it. People will buy them on Ebay at a reduced rate. Amazon also sell phones sim free as well.
