I'm sure I read that 0800 numbers were (sometime in the future) to be freephone numbers via mobile. Can one of you savvy people tell me if that's just wishful thinking?

Yes, from tomorrow, didn't your mobile provider send you a text about it (They were obliged to I think)

But you don't really need to ring 0844, 0845 etc in most cases now to contact customer services.

Yippee Thank you so much. I've only kept the blasted landline for 0800 numbers, now I can finally chuck it out

I think thats a fair comment, most banks and building societies have moved to 03 based numbers now. Although I dare say the Government was the first major institution to move en masse.

If anyone is worried about charges to other 08 numbers, use something WeQ4U, basically they are an indirect dial service who then put you through at no extra cost. Again they have an 03 number thus using existing allowances. The app is available for Android and iOS (not sure about other platforms). Its fairly simple, it will tell you whether a number is covered when you open the app. On Android its even clever enough to pop up when a chargeable number is entered.

Being a geek I just tried on EE but still got the warning message.... Presume the charges are now zero rated however they won't remove the message until later on...

Also being a geek, I made a call via all networks, the position as of 00:30 is:

O2 - Still play warning of charging (asking you to call again, dropping 0!)
Vodafone - The only network to have removed the announcement correctly!
T-Mobile - Still playing warning of being charged.
Orange - Still playing warning of being charged.
3 - Have broken the ability to call 080 numbers altogether.

Yep, most networks have sorted it out now it seems. O2 still have not, still forcing you to terminate your call and redial without the first 0. TPO / Post Office have still not removed their announcement too.

My EE contract has always given me free 0800 calls, but I still get the warning message, so it must be a general standard.

I've not checked all the operators' web sites yet but it's a poor show so far. Sainsbury's, Lebara and White are still charging, they say, and the link on 3 to their PAYG price plan is broken.

They have had 18 months to prepare for this.

I thought the access charge had to be the same regardless of number called???

http://www.lebara.co.uk/uk-calling

EDIT: Just checked http://www.ukcalling.info/faqs - it appears Lebara are in breach...

Quote:
“Will the access charge always be the same, regardless of which telephone or mobile company I use?

Access charges will be set by each telephone company, and communicated by them to their customers. You may wish to compare access charges between providers and for the different call plans a provider offers.

Although the access charge may vary between providers, it will always be the same for calls you make to the affected numbers within your call plan. Some providers may also choose to offer call plans which include some of these charges within their inclusive call packages.”

They are indeed in breach! Each They can set the access charge per tariff, so, once you're on a tariff with a particular provider the access charge should always be the same for all 084/087/09/118. The rate needs to be communicated on invoices / billing too.

The problem is, Ofcom are not very good at actually doing anything useful, so, lets hope they can actually get providers like this to sort it out and do it properly!

In what way are they in breach? It seems I don't understand how the new system works.

Under the rules, the access charge must be the same, regardless of 084/087/09/118 number, however Lebara are quoting different access charges for different number ranges, which is illegal. Having different access charges would kind of remove the whole point of the UK Calling changes...

I've just tweeted them publicly to ask... Let's see what happens...
