BBC iPlayer is HD. Netflix and the TalkTalk Player are HD and SD, but there is oodles of HD material on both.

I don't think it is. I suspect that much of its material was originally shot with HD cameras, and that makes it look sharper - possibly getting the most out of SD. I remember the early days of colour TV. I didn't have a colour set at the time, but programmes made in colour looked a lot brighter and clearer than those shot on the old B & W cameras. I suspect something similar is happening here.

I noticed the same thing on Netflix. I watched 'Blink', the much-acclaimed Dr. Who episode and could have sworn I was watching HD. Yet 'Blink' was made before Dr. Who switched to HD. Doesn't mean that they weren't equipping themselves with the new gear at the time though, and it doesn't mean that they didn't use it.

Blurry vision SD only. Channels 4 & 5 on demand are also SD only but look a lot better than the ITV player.

HD on TalkTalk YouView comprises: the Freeview HD channels plus BBC iPlayer, Netflix and the TalkTalk Player. That doesn't sound like much, but it's actually quite a lot.

The standard of the SD on demand stuff varies quite a bit. ITV Player rarely looks good on anything, and All 4 can be just about as bad at times, although it seems to vary from programme to programme. Other than that, though, not bad.

But the free Sky channels are on the TalkTalk player, so surely that's the same thing.

No, I was referring to Sky One, Sky Two, Sky Living, Real Lives, Sky Arts and Sky Sports News, which are in the EPG and come at no extra cost when you have the Plus TV package. They are not HD, to the best of my knowledge, but their picture quality is good nonetheless. I have never looked at the Sky stuff in the TalkTalk Player, so I can't comment on that - but I would be surprised if it is HD. I don't intend subscribing to them, so I will have to wait for someone else to enlighten me. The HD material in the Talk Talk Player is to be found in TalkTalk Box Office in the main - and there is plenty of it there.

Actually, I just found the catch-up Sky stuff in the TalkTalk Player. I didn't realise it was free until I tried to watch a bit of Hannibal and it just started instead of asking me to enter my PIN. Not convinced it is HD (although it could be, because the picture is certainly very good)
