BBC WM League One Walsall v Coventry City (3pm Updates) Speaking of which, I'm not sure whether it was Tom, BBC Radio 5 Live's Steve Wyeth or whoever was at the Bescot for Sky Sports Soccer Saturday - but I could hear one of the reporters at the game very clearly in the background of Dale Moon and Mick Kearns' Saddlers Player commentary! |

Tom Marlow was BBC WM's reporter at Walsall's marvellous win over Coventry City - he also conducted the post-match interviews for Saddlers Player. You might be interested to know that WM and Saddlers Player have been sharing interviews conducted by their respective broadcasters across the two platforms this season.

Friday 21st August - talkSPORT
Birmingham City v Derby County - Tom Ross!!! Big news this - a talkSPORT debut for BRMB/Free Radio 80s legend Tom Ross. It's the first time he's worked for a broadcaster other than the now-Orion Media owned stations in ages, I think since the 1990s when I believe he did a few cameos on Sky Sports in their early days when they were using local commercial radio commentators on their highlights shows. Earlier Tom was presenting The Friday Football Phone-In on Free Radio 80s from St Andrew's, although interestingly he never explicitly mentioned it, probably as FR80s was going off-air at 7pm and it would have sounded weird for him to be at the game but not covering it live for them. It was pretty clear he was there though, as you could hear the tannoy. Matt Murray mentioned how he was sitting in Tom's usual chair in the studio. I always felt there would be a day when Tom would turn up on talkSPORT - he's well liked by a number of members of their sports coverage team, notably Ian Danter who he gave a first break too, and quite clearly is a listener to the station. Indeed now that Dants is based in the south, perhaps Tom might be a logical fit to report for them on Sunday and midweek games taking place in Birmingham on a semi-regular basis? Over the past seven days talkSPORT have called upon a number of recent local radio correspondents including Tom's former Goalzone colleague Olly Wilson, ex-BBC Radio Leeds presenter Derm Tanner and voices familiar to BBC Radio Sheffield listeners in Paul Walker and Nick Walsh; I think it may have been Walsh's debut on the station last Saturday although I'm not sure - he's definitely done some national work for IRN but I'm not sure if he turned up on talkSPORT last term. But for me hearing Tom on talkSPORT is a really big deal, he's been so ingrained in the West Midlands football scene with him celebrating his 35th year with what's now Free Radio this season. Great to hear him broadcasting nationally and hopefully this will be the first of many occasions we hear him on talkSPORT. Blues Player has the former Free Radio 80s duo Mikey Burrows and Kevan Broadhurst commentating on this game. It's good to hear that Free Radio 80s sports team are now being used by others. Mikey Burrows has been reading the sport over the last 5 weeks on BBC WM's breakfast show and is working on most Wolves game for the Wolves player and now the Bules player. Chris Coles is this weekend commentating on the cricket for BBC WM and has also reported on some pre season friendlies. His twitter bio now says "Freelance sports broadcaster & commentator including BBC WM, Free Radio, Aston Villa, Birmingham City and Walsall". I guess he still helps Free Radio doing the pre game interviews. He has been heard on the Walsall player and it looks like he will be also working for Villa and Blues Player's. |

Sunday 23rd August
BBC WM BBC WM Sport with Mark Regan Premier League West Brom v Chelsea - Mark Regan & Tony Brown (Live 1:30pm Commentary) County Championship Division 1 Cricket Nottignhamhsire v Warwickshire - Chris Coles (Updates with Commentary online from Chris, Dave Bracegirdle of BBC Nottingham & Phil Britt of Warwickshire CCC) With all 5 teams playing Tuesday, it will be interesting to see if we hear any new voices. Richard Wilford is away covering the breakfast show and with Rob Gurney away too WM will have Mark Regan, Mike Taylor and Tom Marlow. Steve Hermon was working for BBC Manchester this weekend so I don't know if he will be working for WM this season. I guess we may hear Chris Coles, Adam Bridge and maybe a new name. |

Great to hear that Tom is working for talkSPORT, I think we will hear more of him on this station and on the Blues player as the season goes on. talkSPORT have Nigel Pearson who lives in West Midlands.
However, these days not all of the guys I mention regularly cover that beat - Pearson does but has his darts and speedway commitments, but as mentioned Danter now lives in the south and will often cover Southampton and Swansea City home games for Matchday Live. As the host of the excellent Up The League, Peters is very much talkSPORT's Football League correspondent so is just as likely to be at a top Championship game in the north or south as he is to be in his native East Midlands, while for many years Rowe and Humphreys have covered games played in the North-West outside of the big cities more so than they do Midlands games south of Stoke. So I've thought for a while now that for them to have an additional Midlands-based correspondent would be useful - not only can they call upon Tom Ross, but there's Olly Wilson and also Mikey Burrows, seeing as he now regularly works for a UTV Radio-owned station as Signal 107's Wolves commentator. Locally, it's really good to hear there now seems to be a synergy in terms of sharing sports broadcasters between BBC WM, Free Radio 80s, Signal 107 and the local sports teams. It's good to hear some of the area's many talented commentators working across multiple platforms - as a fan of both teams, I've really enjoyed hearing Chris Coles commentating on Saddlers Player over the last week and look forward to hearing him doing WM's Warwickshire commentaries during the rest of the summer. And arrangements like the one I mentioned between WM and Walsall regarding interviews are a win-win for all concerned. |

Good to hear that Tom Ross had an outing on talkSPORT. I remember Gary Newbon once saying he wanted Tom involved in Central's coverage back in the day, but Tom was so busy with BRMB as was that he simply didn't have time.
Sorry I've not had chance to read all the posts, Tom has had national outings before, I've heard his reports for IRN in various parts of the country before now, and of course he did a couple of World Cups for Capital Radio Group |

Yes, Tom (who's father is Scottish) covered Scotland games at France 98 along with Jim Proudfoot for the Capital Radio Group - they were the main commentary pairing on BRMB back then with the station being owned by the Capital Group at the time. That's the only World Cup I've known him to have covered though, if he did more than one I'm guessing it must have been either Italia 90 or USA 94? I'd guess the former, given that Capital would only have had a limited team in the USA. He may have also covered Euro 96 and/or Euro 2000 in some capacity for them, the latter being the last tournament the Capital Radio Group covered in the form of live commentaries.

It seems Mikey Burrows was at the West Brom v Chelsea game for BBC WM but, he was used as the presenter or commentator and in fact he wasn't used on air at all (I think he just did the interviews afterwards). That doesn't make any sense why couldn't Mikey commentate with Mark Regan presenting.

Given that they did commentary on Doncaster Rovers v Leeds United from the last round, I wonder if they came to some sort of arrangement to swap their usual second round live game for a first round tie, which they don't normally do. Mark Saggers presenting Kick Off from the Keepmoat Stadium with Michael Gray at St James' Park Capital One Cup Second Round Luton Town v Stoke City - Jim Proudfoot West Bromwich Albion v Port Vale - Simon Humphreys After the 10.30pm sports bulletin, they then had Simon Humphreys doing commentary from the Hawthorns on the penalties in the latter fixture from Port Vale's second spot kick onwards, with this being interspersed by Goldstein announcing the third round draw as it was being made. Quote:
On Hawksbee and Jacobs, they mentioned it was Mike Bovill's last commentary/update for talksport
I suppose it makes sense that Mike Bovill won't be involved in commentaries or reports any long now that he has a senior role as the station's Head of Sport (presumably he'll continue to do live match production work), although I'd be interested to know if this just applies to football given that the Rugby World Cup is coming up and I imagine they'll need as many voices as possible to report on that tournament when they are stretching their sports reporting team across both domestic football and rugby union this autumn. |
