Rugby World Cup Pool A
Wales v Fiji - Rupert Bell and Rupert Moon

Is that the most Rupert-heavy reporting team ever? talkSPORT aren't carrying updates on France v Canada, today's other game in the Rugby World Cup, which is the first match from this tournament that they haven't had a dedicated reporter covering. They are doing a rugby union special after 8pm though.

From John Roder: 'After making a return to the radio with talkSPORT in September I am doing a Premier League match for them later this month, which will be interesting to say the least!' I guess it will be Sunderland v Newcastle at midday on the 25th.

Thanks for highlighting this Tony and I guess you'll be right - Sunday 25th October is talkSPORT's first double header of commentaries of the season, with two derbies in Sunderland v Newcastle United followed by Manchester United v Manchester City. I'd guess Sam and Stan will be at the later game due to its profile and for Call Collymore afterwards, so it should be John Roder on duty at the Stadium of Light. Wonder who they'll put with him - would they dare to go with Michael Gray?

October's a funny month as far as talkSPORT's Sunday commentaries go - three local derbies in these two at the end of the month and Everton v Liverpool this Sunday, but no Premier League fixtures on either of the two middle Sundays. However, Sunday 11th is during a Euro 2016 Qualifying weekend and they'll be doing commentary on Finland v Northern Ireland and Poland v Republic of Ireland that day.

I listened to John Roder and Stuart Pearce's commentary on Borussia Monchengladbach v Manchester City on Wednesday night instead of that of BT Sport, and I really enjoyed the way they worked in tandem, particularly their mutual recollections of beginning their respective careers at Coventry City (Pearce as a young footballer, Roder as a commentator for BBC Coventry & Warwickshire). Hopefully we'll hear lots more of both of them this season.

National League
Guiseley v Lincoln City - Michael Hortin and Steve Thompson (7.45pm commentary, also on the BBC Sport website)

Imps Player are doing their own commentary on this match via a very muffled phone line, I've not been able to make out who their team is though. Millers Player and Clarets Player (with Phil Bird and Dave Roberts) are both doing their own commentary on Rotherham United v Burnley. Not sure who the solo commentator is for the former.

So Arsenal vs Manchester United is the first game this season where 5live are going to use a 3 man commentary team, with Alan Green, John Murray and Jermaine Jenas, fair enough its a big game, but why didnt they do the same for Chelsea vs Arsenal? Or even one of the CL ties?

Just seems strange which games they choose and dont choose for a 3 man team, i wonder what their rationale is when deciding.

I've never really understood the Five Live approach of 2 main commentators and 1 summariser. Even now it's been reduced, when they do do it, having 1 main and 2 summarisers for the full 90 minutes would make more sense. It's the approach taken by most other stations when they use a 3-man team.

Andrew Dawkins is reading out the half time & full time scores on WM. For must of the season it has been Tom Marlow apart from the 2 Saturday's that Tom was covering games where it was Nikki Lloyd. It used to be John Platt who read them out in pervious season he also read the sports news for 3 days in the week but over the last 2 years he has been doing less and less and now he just reads the sport some Fridays. I don't know how many season he has been doing it for, maybe The Difference can help me out on this one?

It's a pity the three weeks is up as Barry Davies has really grown into his radio commentary role. He was on fine form today and at the end they seemed to hint that he might come back as cover in the future.

I can't tell you an exact date, but I do know that John Platt had been reading out the half-time and full-time scores on BBC WM on Saturdays for as long as I can remember - since I was a child in the mid 1990s anyway. Much as I'm glad to hear Andrew Dawkins has a gig on BBC WM's sports coverage again, it's a shame that Platty is no longer doing this.

I read on the internet that it was Nick Owen who gave John a job at WM (Nick left in the later 70s) so that means John has been there for over 35 years and I read that before he was at WM he had a career as a newspaper journalist so he must be in his mid 60s.

Maybe he's pre-recording Network Gold (a long-running oldies chart music show that has followed their Saturday afternoon coverage since at least the 1990s) these days and so isn't in the studio ready to present that show after WM Sport finishes at 6pm?

If so, that would explain why they've been getting someone else - presumably people who are also working as studio-based producers - to read the classified scores. Out of interest, what happened that season a few years back when Network Gold was shunted around the schedule? (I forget the exact year and the timeslots I'm afraid)

I think he has pre-recorded Network Gold for a long time now. He plays lots of rare records and does a lot of research and with no producer this would take a lot of time and with him cutting down on the days he does the sports updates in the day from 3 to 1 and with his age, I think he has semi retired. If I remember rightly before Tom Marlow started reporting on games he was a producer for WM Sport so he has gone back to his old job I expect.

Just to add to the John Platt discussion, John has been at WM a *very* long time. I couldn't give you an exact date but he was also on the newsreader roster back in the mid 1980s. I guess he must be of retirement age but still does a bit?
