Whilst randomly noticing that there's local radio commentary games streaming on the BBC sport website (Lincoln City v Leicester City and SV Meppen v Derby County if you're that bothered) a couple of click throughs gives you the news that Jim Spence is no longer a full time employee of BBC Scotland.

Sad news about Radio City ending their coverage of Everton and Liverpool. For those interested there's a thread specifically discussing it in this section here.

I wonder if Bauer Radio's decision to end City's live football coverage - although they will be doing Monday and Friday night phone-ins as stations like Free Radio 80s do - after an over 40 year run indicates anything about the future of football on their other stations, specifically Absolute Radio and their Scottish stations? Absolute have one year left on the Premier League radio contract and unlike in TV the 2016-2019 deal has yet to have gone to tender, however they did make a point of mentioning their commentary rights in the press release announcing the launch of Absolute 105.2FM in the West Midlands. It's never nice to see this sort of thing happening, so hopefully it will prove an isolated move.

Personnel-wise, best wishes to everyone at Radio City who has been affected by this move. It'll be interesting to see where their commentary teams go from here - Alan Irwin and Graeme Sharp covered Everton, Steve Hothersall and John Aldridge covered Liverpool. I'm sure the quartet won't be short of offers; in Irwin's case he has commentated on PL games for Newstalk in the Republic of Ireland and is currently covering county cricket for Sky Sports News; while Hothersall already works for LFC TV - it wouldn't be surprising if his and Aldo's commitments with the Liverpool's in-house channel expands considerably given this move.

As a 25 year long listener to City Football and am gutted. But it's not a shock. Matches increasingly not being on Saturdays at 3pm will be a big factor. Everton had a ton moved for Europa League and Liverpool rarely played Saturday 3pm either.Sport is supposed to fill Saturday 2 to 6.

I agree with The Difference. Radio City has a huge heritage in covering football on Merseyside and I see it as another nail in the coffin of commercial radio being anything other than formulaic and every station sounding just like each other. It is not that long ago that Hallam used to cover South Yorkshire football, Metro had decent coverage of Newcastle and Sunderland, and Radio City covered Everton and Liverpool. I fear for the Scottish radio stations whose football coverage improved markedly last year.

I don't fear so much for Scottish stations because I come back to the point I've raised. They have signed rights to fill Saturday 2 till 6. The Scottish games are pretty guaranteed in that so they'll be happy to be able to sell that slot as weekly football. Its become harder and harder for City to do that in Liverpool.

I think that's a very good point to make - in the case of Bauer's stations in Scotland and Absolute Radio, they very specifically hold rights to 3pm kick-offs on Saturdays which they can build a consistent schedule around. That was never the case with the clubs covered by Radio City or indeed any of the Bauer-owned stations that have ended their live football coverage in the last 10-15 years.

I also think IanFergus is painting with far too broad a stroke when he says that "commercial radio [is not] anything other than formulaic [with] every station sounding just like each other." That may be true of most Global and many Bauer stations, but in the case of UTV Radio they are surely now the standard bearer for sports coverage on commercial radio - not just nationally with talkSPORT and talkSPORT 2, but locally they continue to sustain live sport across the group, which even expanded last season with RadioWave picking up rights to Blackpool and includes coverage of traditional lower league teams such as Peak covering Chesterfield. So it's far from being all bad.

I would have thought that Radio City had the rights for the upcoming season but have chosen to relinquish the rights.

For Lincoln City v Leicester City on BBC Radio Leicester - Jason Bourne presented from pitchside at Sincil Bank, with commentary from Ian Stringer and Ian Marshall. It was on 104.9 FM, DAB and online too.

Radio Yorkshire didn't provide commentary from anywhere or reports from the ground of Leeds United's friendly in Ausstria on Tuesday.

Thursday 23rd July - talkSPORT

Mark Saggers presenting Kick Off alongside Chris Ramsey

UEFA Europa League Second Qualifying Round Second Leg
Birkirkara v West Ham United - Graham Courtney

Cycling: Tour de France
Stage 18 - Lisa O'Sullivan

Darts: World Matchplay
Winter Gardens, Blackpool - Dan Dawson

BBC London 94.9 aren't providing coverage of West Ham's second leg as far as I can see - the station is airing the networked Mark Forrest evening show and there's no online commentary option on the BBC Sport website.

BBC Radio Wales

Steffan Garrero presenting Radio Wales Sport from the studio

UEFA Europa League Second Qualifying Round Second Leg
Newtown v FC Kobenhavn - Dylan Griffiths and Owain Tudur Jones (6.45pm full commentary on the BBC Sport website, second half commentary on FM, AM and DAB)

Rob Phillips and Owain Tudur Jones commentated on the first leg of this tie for Radio Wales at Telia Parken last Thursday. With that game having also been a 6.45pm BST kick-off, I'm guessing it was a similar arrangement with the first half being online only and the second half going out on the main Radio Wales Sport programme.

Alan Green narrated Channel 4's awful 'Lookalikes' programme that aired this week. Hope he got a good fee.

Here's a Liverpool Echo article that the poster above linked to in another thread that I'm sure will be of interest here: it discusses the end of Radio City's Merseyside football commentaries with memories of its coverage in the 70s, 80s and 90s, with contributions from Clive Tyldesley.

Saturday 25th July - talkSPORT

Ian Danter presenting Saturday Scoreboard alongside Mark Langdon from the Racing Post (1-3pm) and Shaun Derry (3-6pm)

Emirates Cup
Wolfsburg v Villarreal & Arsenal v Olympique Lyonnais - Ian Abrahams

Friendlies
Brentford v Stoke City - Tony Incenzo
Mansfield Town v Leicester City - Dom McGuinness
Walsall v Aston Villa - Dave Rowe

FIFA World Cup 2018 Qualifying Draw
Konstantinovsky Palace, Saint Petersburg - Alex Dibble (also sports newsreader)

Cycling: Tour de France
Stage 20 - Lisa O'Sullivan

Horse Racing: King George VI Weekend
Ascot Racecourse - Rupert Bell (commentary on the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at 3.50pm)

Formula 1: Hungarian Grand Prix Qualifying
Hungaroring - Graham Courtney

Athletics: Anniversary Games 2015
Olympic Stadium, London - Michael Weadock

Darts: World Matchplay
Winter Gardens, Blackpool - Dan Dawson

On Thursday, talkSPORT carried commentary on the penalty shootout at the end of the Birkirkara v West Ham United Europa League qualifying tie. As the studio had briefly lost their line to Graham Courtney (reconnecting only when the shootout was over), The Sports Bar's presenting team of Andy Goldstein and Jason Cundy did their own commentary on it. And in case anyone was wondering, no, I won't be including that in my end-of-season records!

Saturday 25th August

BBC WM

Summer Saturday with Adam Bridge

Pre Season Friendlies
Burton Albion v Birmingham City - Tom Marlow (Updates)
Shrewsbury Town v Wolverhampton Wanderers - Nikki Lloyd (Updates)
Swindon Town v West Brom - Chris Coles (Updates)
Walsall v Aston Villa - Mark Regan (Updates)

One Day Cup Cricket
Nottinghamshire v Warwickshire - Mikey Burrows (Updates, with Commentary online with Mikey alongside Dave Bracegirdle)

No, that's not a typo. Chris Coles is covering football for BBC WM who is a regular on Free Radio 80's football coverage. Mikey Burrows who is the Wolves player commentary and a former BRMB/Free Radio 80s man himself is covering cricket today. I'm very shocked. Richard Wilford is off and I guess Rob Gurney, Mike Taylor and Steve Hermon are also off. Surely having Adam Bridge at the cricket (who does cover the odd game) would be a better choice with Rego as the presenter and maybe Mikey at one of the football matches.

Rob Phillips was at the World Cup qualifying draw on behalf of BBC Radio/Sport Wales (he tweeted a photo with him alongside John Murray and BBC Sport website's Phil Wye).

Wasn't listening to the radio this afternoon, but Dylan Griffiths was updating someone somewhere about Nottingham Forest v Swansea City.

Saturday 25th July:

BBC Coventry and Warwickshire

Pre Season Friendly

Luton Town v Coventry City

Commentators: Geoff Foster and David Deakin (from Kenilworth Road)

This was a full 90 minute commentary on all platforms including online, thought it was a strange decision as it must be the 1st time in 10 years they've covered a full friendly fixture like this

Haven't done the previous 2 friendlies at Nuneaton and Portsmouth just reports in to the Saturday afternoon programmes

BBC RADIO LEICESTER

Mansfield Town v Leicester City - Jason Bourne presented pitchside at Field Mill, with Ian Stringer, Mike McCarthy and Matt Elliott (commentary on FM, DAB and online)

Michael Gray just said on talkSPORT that he'd be at the Community Shield for them next Sunday.
